Champions were Bungie bolting the laziest and clumsiest possible rock/paper/scissors counter system to the game because they got tired of people using the exact same guns all the time. They still don't flow with the rest of the game, even though making subclass verbs work with them was better than nothing.

They've just painted themselves into a corner design-wise. The latest difficulty philosophy they have decided on is that you just have to have the correct loadout, and the activity is trivialized. It means Victory is achieved in orbit, and then you load into the activity and go through the motions

Overcharge and Surge and origin trait mechanics are flexible enough that almost any Loadout is possible, but restrictive enough to be annoying. I also really don't like the current seasonal artifact concept where two of the subclass are just straight up removed from the game

Vex Mythoclast deletes. all 3 champions and its playing wonderful with all the solar goodies from the seasonal artifact.

Really the only issue right now with exotics is that Sunshot exists why use anything else this season.

I have mixed feelings about champions - I think when the season artifact is set up well, it helps shift the meta around and make you use some different weapons, and imposes some "loadout" wrinkles.

On the other hand, overload champions are garbage and while you can often nuke them down, they can just as often be incredibly annoying to deal with because of their aggressive healing and stun immunity periods making it easy for them to slip away.

And there's been plenty of times I try to loadout with appropriate champion counters but end up with annoying and restrictive loadout options where I feel at a disadvantage for using the weapons I want to, or just end up feeling like Im stuck using the same guns again and again. (Riptide)

Replace champions with Tormentors and we're good. That whole thing was always poorly implemented regardless of how easy it is to "counter" them. The PVE is solved anyway, why add more friction to the new players.

The complete lack of checkpoints in the Vexcaliber mission is a choice. Admittedly I'd be less annoyed by it right now if I hadn't had some kind of Battleye error and have to redo more or less the whole thing but scream.

None of the exotic missions get checkpoints, unfortunately. It makes 'em a huge pain in the rear end to run on legendary if you're on short time or taking someone new through.

I much prefer the Tormentors 'shoot the crit spots off to expose the bigger crit spot' mechanic to the champions. It's something you need to focus on that requires skill and changes the rhythm of combat (and the noise occupies the same 'oh gently caress' attention space as exploder shanks and shriekers) without needing you to switch your loadouts or hope the pubbies have at least one way of dealing with it.

“We don’t really know where this goes — and I’m not sure we really care.”
Tormentors are awful and easily the most unfun enemy in the game. Even going after their weak points they are still miserable bullet sponges. Nightfall bosses go down faster than they do.

help
After having 3 successful Onslaught (regular) runs out of 4 yesterday, today's just been awful. Bugged boss door switches, dumb luck (booped all three of us right into the Midtown water), but most of all, people leaving mid-run. Not even loot farming or 20-waves-for-the-bounty-and-out, but at seemingly random times. I don't know if it's just more network and error problems than usual, or people deciding we're doomed and bailing early (though we seemed to be doing well enough), or what.

Also I dunno, I've heard complaints about every specialised enemy like champions and tormentors and at the end of the day they do what they're meant to, which is throw a wrench in your plan. I don't know if it'd be *better* if we didn't have anything like that, altho I don't know if they're exactly the most engaging either.

There's gotta be *something* we have to consider, otherwise the already simple gameplay gets even simpler. I actually like the concept of champs, unstoppables especially, but I don't really like how they're handled and delivered right now.

Alternatively get rid of champs and bring back match game lmao

Seriously tho, how would you even introduce something else to have anyone stop and think? Once you get going in this game it's hard to slow down outside of specific things like a tormentor or champ or something.

Tormentors suck as a returning/new player because there's no tooltips saying "yo, don't blow super on this guy because he won't take damage until you tickle his shoulders".

Bobby Deluxe

Everything sucks for new / returning players though. I was running my brother & his other half through Grasp last night and had to explain to my brother about how they buffed exotic primaries and buffed handcannons to do extra damage to orange bars, so actually Malfeasance was a way, way better choice than a legendary sidearm for the final encounter.

There are an insane number of things that players are expected to know that were never explained outside of seasonal activities or patch notes they might not have been there for.

Tormentors' glowing bits shouldn't be crit spots, they should be separate entities that can be destroyed by any damage. Leaving them Precision Damage Only just makes non-precision Heavy Weapons borderline useless in any content they appear in.

e: For some math on the subject, 60% of Heavy Weapon types are so inefficient against Tormentors as to be effectively useless, and that percentage only increases if you include Exotic weapons.

Supers are even worse, with 84.6% of them having drastically reduced impact. The only ones that don't are the two Golden Guns and the three Strand supers since Tormentors take massively increased damage from Strand abilities.

Tormentors loving suck.

The precision heavies like LFRs can also have a hard time with how much tormentors twitch around or face away from you.

Tormentors should lose all their damage resistances after you break their shoulders.

Regular tormentors aren't too bad, but like 90% of them that you encounter in activities are named minibosses with extra hp and immunity to CC.

I'd say go even further and have specific Big Boi Baddies(tm) that are killable but suffer a weakness to a specific element. Like Strand for tormentors, Stasis for Cabal, Void for Eliksni, Solar for Hive, etc.

But then Prismatic becomes even more powerful and we're back to "I'm forced to use XYZ for this enemy" so forget that I guess.

Edit: really tho just allow random enemies to spawn instead of static for a bunch of stuff, it'd be way more interesting.

Cool thing about Fighting Lion is your Kinetic slot can be used for a sniper rifle and they go down pretty fast.

I've got the bonus 'lighting round' at the end of onslaught where it says to kill as many tormentors as possible once, do you have to get a certain amount to get bonus prizes?

I’m suggesting that his over reliance on one weapon is having a detrimental impact on his game experience. I don’t think that’s weird. If you have all these tools and refuse to use them you can’t say that it’s bad design.
