"...But the casino's closed right now, and isn't going to reopen any time soon. Oh, well."

So, yeah, Baccarat would be the casino town, but I guess part of having Pickham's is that this one... is closed.

At least the equipment shop hasn't given up on us.

The Poison Needle is a weird little widget that deals 1 damage, but attempts to inflict instant death. Since Jessica's regular attack is useless (that Staff of Antimagic she has for that deadly 81 attack? 3rd strongest weapon available to her at this point, behind the Dream Blade and a 52-attack knife) and instant death works on mobs, it might be worth trying. I don't, but

The Coral hairpin is finally an upgrade over the bunny ears, and can be alchemized with a silver platter for an even stronger hat. But that stronger hat is available in the next town's shop so I'll just wait a little.

"The odd thing is, no one's seen hide nor hair of him since. What's goin' on!?"

Yangus understands my pilferingsearching ethic perfectly.

Also we've had enough tangents and for the sake of drama we need to meet the antagonist again in order to remind ourselves of our motivations and the stakes.

I don't know, maybe he wanted to gamble a little.

Golding has adopted children, and they really don't like each other it seems.

Hm, okay, so, this guy? He's very suspicious.

Incidentally this cook'd dagger for killing doesn't whack as much as the poison needle.

Baccarat's church is not literally adjacent to the casino. Boo. At least it's closer than Pickham's to that casino. At least.

"He said he was leaving for some place called the Dark Ruins. But no matter how hard I pressed, he woudln't tell me why. Hm? Where are the Dark Ruins? I don't have a clue! Maybe you should ask around in the pub in the hotel basement?"

It's literally about magic water & cheese.

Also I already hate Golding's adopted children.

Golding, besides owning a casino, is incredibly powerful. And he got robbed and hasn't been seen recently. Think it was Dhoulmagus?

This restaurant is built into the tree. It looks neat. It would've been easy to just have it be a plain building but it's in the tree.

"But all of these workers kept getting injured. Everyone was deathly afraid of the thing. That's why it's still standing here, pristine and untouched."

What a hunky sage.

I have no idea why but suddenly I have a deep desire for these. Maybe it was something alchemical.

The hotel's extremely cheap.

2nd branch of the gold bank is here. It's the same as the one in Minnie's castle.

So a monk saw Dhoulmagus coming to this town. Golding's mansion had a break-in. No one's seen Golding since. Someone's died.

Welp.

Let's go to the seedy basement.

Nevermind the probable murder by Dhoulmagus. This is our immediate goal.

You know, I should remember this so I can get my favorite thing: PS2 cheesecake.

Anyway I steal their underwear and move on.

On the second floor, we find the bartender.

Talking with a man not unlike the monster arena MC.

"I swear I won't say a word. We barmen know when to keep our mouths shut."
"By the Goddess, lower your voice! I assume you've heard about Mr. Golding's house being burgled."

I was right about blatantly forecasted information!

"I told you to keep it down! That's why nobody's seen hide nor hair of him recently. He isn't among the living any more."
"But Mr. Golding was such a big man! You're trying to tell me he was killed by a random burglar!?"

Woo! I'm 2 for 2 on unsubtly-foreshadowed developments!

"I didn't see him myself, mind you, but that's what they say."
"A jester, huh?"
"A strange one, this burglar. Seems he broke in, killed Mr. Golding, and left. He didn't take anything valuable."

Just like the previous three murders, then.

"I also heard that Cash and Carrie have ordered some men to find the jester and avenge their father's death."
"By the Goddess! This is big... I won't tell a soul. You can count on me. I better get back to my customers. See you later."

Eight, you dork.

"I'm sorry. I did not see you standing there. Did you... Did you hear what we were talking about? Ah, forgive me for the strange question. A slip of the tongue! I'd better get back to work."

Anyway I steal from this hotel some more. Do they really let anyone wander into the rooms and steal from the dressers?

By the by, the thing I started baking last chapter finished. 10 defense and a whack resistance. How lovely!

Next up is the magic cheese.

Jessica hits level 23 on my trip out to the boat. She gets the upgrade to Bang.

And she hits a notable passive from Sex Appeal. Charm Attack, as it's called, is a 1/16 chance of making an enemy lose a turn. It works on a surprisingly wide array of monsters and happens regardless of what she does.

Boom's looking a lot more intimidating than Bang, no?

It won't be until about level 30 that the Wisdom scaling kicks in for Boom at 151 points, and that won't get far until Kaboom takes over at 33. Still, it's a welcome upgrade in damage and she has plenty of MP to spare.

Anyway this is the island with the Dark Ruins, and I'm saying this because it has a terrifying dark cloud over it.

...That's not a level 5 reference.

Eight why are you silently staring at people employed by Golding's family.

"Interesting... I thought there was no one on this island besides us and Golding's murderer."

"Ignore me at your peril! You have been warned."

The best option is to ignore him at our own peril.

He's got a small posse with him, who basically bemoan that they're going to a creepy place to get killed.

Magic Barrier reduces ailment chances in addition to lowering magic damage.

Lesser Demons can dazzle the whole party. They can also zap the whole party for 40ish damage.

It's relatively infrequent as the mostly bash their faces against the party.

Toxic zombies are...

uh...

Angelo doesn't have Squelch yet so Eight has to do all that work on his own.

...Well, um. That's pleasant!

Skeleton Soldiers are like Skeletons, but have bigger numbers.

The chunky cheese increases all allies' resistance to fire and ice breaths. Cheeses get strange.

This however is rather straightforward.

We're almost at the cloud of darkness, so dark it shows up on the world map. So what's in there?

One Step Ahead

Is that...
