I’ve been working a lot on trying to make 2.5D work for me in Blender. There are a few different ways I’m approaching stuff and I feel like they’re starting to come together:

Starting work on the 2nd Fuzzy Princess cartoon!

Trying to keep it within 10 minutes (the 1st one was 18 min.). The script was half the length, so hopefully i can keep it within that.

A piece of animation I did quick so it'd come out today.

Adding sound effects was fun. I was going through the meow sounds I have when my kittens started climbing around the room trying to find the other cat. That was somethin' ha haa

Hi everyone- I am getting back into animation after a brief hiatus to get my life in order. When I last did anything it was using Toonboom Animate and Flash. I am wondering about workflow- I was thinking about breaking my storyboards into shots, animating them in whatever Flash is called now and importing for assembly into After Affects. There is no dialogue so it should be as straight forward as it could be. Sound good?

I've been watching a lot of 1970s animation, many of which have laugh tracks, so I took a scene from one of my cartoons and added them. It's awful lol

https://twitter.com/bakertoons/status/1515745053813190659

Also I've been making progress on my new cartoon (estimated to be 13 minutes, based on the animatic). About 2/3 of the animation is done, and backgrounds are coming back slowly. I think I've been improving as an animator, so I can't wait to unleash it!

This is the first(-ish) animation I ever made! It was also done in one day for school, after the realization that I need to return my animation assignment the next day, and I learned how to use Adobe Animate while I was doing it. It was hassle and there's a lot I would've done otherwise or with more care, but it was fun to do and I learned a lot!

I got the last backgrounds back for my next cartoon, so the animation is 100% done for my next cartoon! Just need to render all the scenes so I can edit them together.

This is gonna be a 13 minute cartoon. Animation went smooth, having worked on it from February to June. "Katrina" by comparison took 6 months to animate, but that one was close to 20 minutes.

I'm excited about this. Can't wait to get it out!

Does anyone know a reason a camera won't animate in Blender? I have keyframes set but it just snaps back to the original position settings when i move the marker.

Most basic thing could be that you haven't actually properly set (inserted/replaced) the keyframes after changing the position.

Hello, I am Secrios, an animator / showrunner for the web series "The Obsidian Archives" on YouTube.

The series straddles the line between animatic and comic dub for long form story telling, making the most of very little.

The story takes place in an post-industrial fantasy universe, dominated by an evil emperor and his Orwellian lackies. You experience the story through the eyes of a curator trying to learn the last fragments of honest information left in the empire.

Here are some example videos to give you an idea on the tone and art style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8DScNiFkfo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dc5-wQZAwPk

In these particular videos we have gone with a visual novel 2.5d style of animation to give a sense of visual dynamics and atmosphere.

I hope this catches any of your interest and we will be sure to keep you updated on any cool new animation related developments in the series.

So YouTube has had a history of having animators run on a treadmill for the algorithm, in spite of the fact that most animation takes time.

Fortunately I found animators getting more success making shorts.

I had a real fun time animating in this format:

I'm trying to learn 2D animation with Blender, having never done any of this before in any software (beyond maybe some flash about 20 odd years ago), and I'm struggling a bit with the software itself. I've cleared out a lot of things so far but it's mostly through trial and error and hoping to find some lucky video on youtube where there's 2 frames of the interface visible where I can realise like "oh, it's in THIS panel, but only when THAT mode is active and i have THAT selected" and so forth

Does anybody have any good resources or tips for figuring out how to get more familiar with blender (particularly 2d animation) and a more consistent/educated way of approaching common patterns?

For example, I wanted to hide some collections in the viewport and render, realised you need to animate the property, tried to set that up, and then afterwards realised "ah actually it'd be cool to add an extra keyframe in there beforehand to allow it to fade out rather than just disappear" and that broke so much poo poo I don't even know how to get it back to where it isn't broken

So far I'm not getting too discouraged, I know it's a huge bit of software and I'm going to have to spend a lot of time mucking around and banging my head against things, but I also recognise that I need some actual education and reference material. It doesn't seem like blender is super popular for 2d animation yet either, so search results tend to skew towards the 3d models

e: just to clarify, I realise blender probably isn't the first choice for 2d animation, but the price is right and I want to get familiar with blender anyway. The idea is to eventually be able to use it to create game assets (2d/isometric for now and later 3d models, animated and static), so I figure at least this way I'm getting familiar with the general software

e2: also if there's a better overall workflow, like using another free software for preliminary stages and importing assets into blender later on please let me know. I did some research but there's just so much stuff out there and I'm not sure where to start

e3: i asked chatgpt and it said people dont really use blender for 2d animation so im going to try krita instead

it is never too late to give up your prejudices
I apologize if this it totally the wrong place to ask this (you can yell at me and I will delete this portion), but I'm interested in bumpers to play in between transitions, or even shorts to play between re-runs of a free open-source computer science & programming class thing I'm doing. If you are interested, I can show you some of what I have created so far, and if you think you could match the general aesthetic and at least be consistent across a single piece I would be interested in talking with you about potential paid work. I will obviously scour this thread now that I have my account working again but I thought I might just ask people who might be interested in contributing to a larger project.

I have lectures for example by a nurse who worked at NASA and I would like to find something worthwhile to play while she explains things.

PM or email me if this is something that might interest you. I'm looking to establish friendships or just working relationships with reliable artists interested in working on uniquely presented scientific material (at least that is the current direction of the project, from who is currently involved) but it is still early phases. It is making money, but it still doesn't cover basic operating costs, but it is growing.

Very weird but consistent style (maybe the tiger art felt lil different than the rest), and overall it works. I'm left confused to what was actually happening but I think that's for the better. A few possible interpretations.

Yeah, finding Dreams to be as polished as Procreate. The drawing engine is the same even if they omitted features like quick shape. This whole thing seems to be soup to nuts, it even includes an editor to cut your movie and do sound. Loving that my brushes are compatible. Prior to this I used Toonsquid, which uses Photoshop stuff and just is not the same.

Working my way through Illusion of Life. It's not all how to, it's history and a lot of production stills and is a fascinating read. So are the Elemental Magic books.

I'm hoping they expand out to include some of the drawing features Procreate has. I think they will, the latest update added basic pencil double tap support.
