Really content-starved, the "comic" co-hosts are completely useless, way too many ads for its runtime and it's very rarely focused on anything actually interesting. Holy poo poo, an entire episode interviewing Laurence Fishburne? A TWO PART interview with Miles O'Brien? No, gently caress no. This is my general impression, as a former weekly listener who studies physics. I can imagine there being much better science podcasts out there. They're not absolutely terrible, but they're not very good either.

If you don't mind the 1969 technical limitations Jacob Bronowski's The Ascent of Man is an awesome step by step account of how we went from cave painting to the modern age. It's companion of sorts, Kenneth Clark's Civilisation gives a similar account but from an art/philosophy angle rather than scientific.

If you liked the historical figure focus of Cosmos, check out James Burke's "Connections" (series 1) and "The Day the Universe Changed" Actually, just watch them anyway, they're the best examples of this kind of show. They even had the same production crew as Cosmos 1.

Actually while I like Connections I always found it a bit disconnected.  He makes some pretty flimsy and circumstantial links sometimes and jumps all over the place, The Ascent of Man gives a much better picture of how worldviews changed over time because it follows a sequential progression. And that's what Cosmos is all about dudes. It's not meant to be the be all end all for documentaries or information about a wide variety of sciences. It's meant for you to watch and go "Hey, that was cool, I especially liked x episode and want to know more".

And after you devote your life to science you discover that a lot of the stuff in Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey was unsubstantiated what-if daydream theories and very badly mischaracterized history, and then you get all bitter about it and confront Neil DeGrasse Tyson about it in a bar in Gatlinburg in mid July and you start fighting him and then you ask him about those bad episodes and why he made them and he tells you that it was to spark your interest in science even if the episodes weren't totally based in hard science or even honest history but that it was worth it because it got you to pursue a career in science and then you walk away with a different point of view And you think to yourself if you ever get a science TV show of your own and you have the chance to put in some BS to get kids interested in science...

Anybody remember which episode had ngt cutting up an ice fish? The one with transparent blood I guess? I've got a daughter that's obsessed with seeing that again and I've skipped though each dvd twice now trying to find it. I don't even remember it from the show myself.
