Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge Episode 6: "Swamp Things"
The remaining creature designers construct a creature that could not only live in a swamp, but be concealed by it.

Looks like another solo challenge so no dumb team drama this week! :woop:
There's conflicting info on the Syfy website but it looks like they've bumped the show into the earlier time slot now that Face Off has finished.

Oh and in case someone hadn't heard, Face Off has been renewed for a 7th season and will return in July with an extra judge and an overarching theme for the entire season:

quote:

SyFy said that season 7 will feature the theme “Life and Death.”

“Each week the contestants will face creative challenges designed to inspire them to explore life, death, rebirth and mortality,” it said.

Season 7 will also introduce new judge, Lois Burwell, a renowned Academy-Award winning makeup artist known for her work on Lincoln, Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan, War Horse and War of the Worlds.

The other judges are Neville Page, Ve Neill, Glenn Hetrick, and Patrick Tatopoulos.

World-renowned Hollywood makeup artist Michael Westmore (Star Trek) serves as the contestant mentor.

The premiere date for season 7 is in June 2014.
http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/635832-face-off-season-7-syfy-show-has-been-renewed-premiere-date/

Lois Burwell has over three decades of experience in movie makeup and has worked on Legend, Highlander, The Princess Bride, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan, Lincoln, The Green Mile, Red Dwarf and The Fifth Element. She won an Academy Award for Braveheart and was nominated for Saving Private Ryan.

17 minute BAFTA masterclass interview with Lois (might be geo-locked for some people) covering things like researching accurate injuries for the Omaha beach opening scene in Private Ryan.

I guess nobody cares about Jim Henson, even when they have Neville Page as a guest judge.

I thought Robert should have won this week. I liked the lily pad eye.

I watch it every week! I would've been happy with either Robert or Melissa winning. I thought they both had solid characters. That gremlin-looking thing was right to get booted, though. What crap.

Seriously, imagine Gonzo introducing the theme each week and going around and chatting with all the contestants on day two, it'd be awesome.

Personally, I thought the puppetry on Russ's Green Jean was better than the rock turtle thing. Also that the decision was more of an aggregate of a guy that's been in the bottom on what, all but two challenges? I feel like a lot of it was editing, since Russ made better TV than the other contestants, but his creations did have an amount of identity to them. And, yeah, the Lily Pad thing should have won, it was clearly the best. So long Russ, you were the gooniest.

Also Russ' swamp monkey was actually camouflaged into the environment unlike Jake's stump creature which wasn't hidden at all. Jake's puppet also failed the second part of the challenge and wasn't able to catch and eat the prey creature because it had such a ridiculously poor range of movement - at one point the prey had escaped then it actually jumped back into the puppet's mouth and it still failed to catch it. Jake has some sculpting skills but he always makes dumb design decisions.

But Russ' puppet did look like poo poo, I'll grant them that.

Edit: continuing on the Muppet host idea, it could also interview the contestant's puppets after their performances. That would also be awesome. I want more puppetry in this puppet show, goddamnit.

She sort of is, as long as Brian is introducing the concept each week. But even then, you still need an MC. I think we're just spoiled with Mckenzie Westmore.

Robert should've won, his lilypad eye was an excellent. Much like Face Off, I wish there was more time to get into the technique each person is using instead of 5 seconds of "and now I'm making this thing out of L-200. Done!". And also like Face Off, I LOVE that there's zero "house drama", even if there's a bit of team drama. I accept that not every reality show can be the best friends helpout singing songs festival that Face Off is.

Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge Episode 7: "Alien Press Conference"
Gigi brings "Farscape" co-star Rygel into the workshop as inspiration for the creature designers to build an alien species attending an intergalactic press conference. But appearances can be deceiving.

There's only Ben, Melissa, Jake and Robert left now so this episode will be the semi-final and next week's episode is the season finale. It looks like my idea about a celebrity puppet host might sort of come to pass this week so we'll see how that turns out. :D

Kinda lame that just because Face-Off is over, this thread stopped being stickied. No point in it now with next week being the finale.

Russ' puppet didn't really hide. It was such a poo poo paint job that is stuck out like a sore thumb, and then the other part of the mission was to have the creature catch and eat prey, and his puppet didn't do that either. Just smashed the rat-thing around. I get that the rock-turtle thing wasn't what they were going for, but it was definitely way more in line with the accomplishing what was asked than what Russ did.

I hope we get another season of this.

Robert's was my favorite this week. When it was revealed I thought it was a lady alien, with the fancy clothes and rhinestone monocle. He's also my favorite contestant in the series - he puts out really great work and also completely understands character.

I also love how all 4 contestants' stories worked together. Melissa's was going to be under attack from Jake's, Ben's was destroyed by Jake's, Jake's gloats about how he's evil, and Robert's sends out secret weapons to defeat Jake's.

I really hope this gets picked up for another season.

This last episode was really good. I think the judges made the right call, but, holy cow all of the creatures were fantastic. Can Creature Shop just hire all of these guys and put Farscape back into production already? :homebrew: Please? I've heard rumors of a movie going into pre-pre-production but nothing solid yet. Obviously Creature Shop has got something in mind if they're advertising themselves with this show.

Just because the prize is a contract with Jim Henson productions, doesn't mean that they can't hire all of them. Isn't there prize money, too?

I like the judges on Creature Shop more, maybe I'm just getting bored of Glenn and the others but Creature Shop judges seem to be a higher pedigree, more helpful, generally nicer and not into taking fashion advice from Predator. Gigi stinks but has powerful legs and wears shorts a lot.

I'm seriously amazed at what they can do in three days and the aliens from last episode were at least as good as those bird things from the Dark Crystal and that was a team project, really cool to see them getting better each episode (barring the glow in the dark lizard which was hilariously awful)

Almost all the cosplayers involved in the first season say that the conversation you're talking about was edited for maximum drama and that they didn't mean what the edited version made them come across as saying. And, of course, you don't have to watch the show at all so as not to damage your sensitivities.

I really hope that we do. My TV Guide listed this as the "Season 1" finale, so maybe that's a good sign. It might be a long shot, but I'd really like to see a DVD release. (I'd LOVE to see the actual screen tests in their entirety.)

As for the episode, I was surprised how many more flaws we saw on these than on last week's episode. But that may have been editting, they were showing more of the individual critique this week than last. Personally, I though Ben's turtle-genetics guy was the best of the three, and that he had the strongest record over all; but I'm not displeased with the results. Robert's sneer and sneeze effect were fantastic.

I loved this show, and I want more. The whole Henson family and company are some of my very favorite artists.
