St. Valentine's School For The Accomplished is an institution in Central Massachusetts, going back one hundred and fifty years. It is one of the oldest and most exclusive boarding schools (serving grades 9 to 12, complete with International Baccalaureate programs) in the state, and many of St. Valentine's alumni (who call themselves the Hearts) have gone on to Ivy League academia, politics, and international finance.

But all good things must come to an end, and St. Valentine's School For Boys is no exception. After a series of bad investments wiped out much of the school's endowment in the Great Recession, and after many alumni were reticent to donate (many of them having issues with their own finances), St. Valentine's was required to take drastic steps in order to stay open. With a new headmaster in place - Headmaster Harry Reeves - St. Valentine's announced that it would be accepting girl students for its 2014 Fall Entry.

There was no end of discussion over this decision, both in the school and out. Ms. Giles, a nearby "busybody" in the Board's words (and accomplished feminist in the words of others) was one of the people who applauded the change, having called it a blight on Massachusetts for several years. The Hearts called it a defacement of their school's character and policy. But without the change, St. Valentine's would shutter its doors - forever.

You are part of the first co-ed class at St. Valentine's, living in the co-ed dormitory of Grey Tower. You are trying to deal with this new class. new people you live with each and every day, and so many other things. Oh, and you're also probably a vampire or something. It's a Monsterhearts game after all!

Write me a person of some traits (using a playbook, of course.) I'd like a summary and/or description, a piece of art, and a character sheet like you normally do for character applications here on SA. Then. write up something about St. Valentine's - it could be the weird and creepy chemistry building, the school song, a secret society, whatever. Doesn't have to be supernatural! I'm trying not to frontload the setting with too many details since that doesn't fit MH well. Of course, I'll ask you some questions once you put your character up.

Our players are packetmantis. Evil Sagan. Hashtag Yoloswag, and Wolery.

If everyone gets their characters done by Sunday we can play Monday night at 9 EST!

Of course you know how to reach me if you have any questions.

ps: if you're thinking of using a different skin from what you were already planning on using, check in with me first if it's not from the core rules.

Job Cameron

Job Cameron comes from an esteemed Texan family. His great grandfather served as a General in World War 2. His father is a Senator like his grandfather. He's the only male in his family who is not a member of the Freemasons. By any measure, the Camerons are American royalty.

The family has always had to endure Job's determined "black sheep" status. Unlike his older brother (future Governor of Texas Isaac Cameron), Job was never studious, proper, or particularly friendly. When he grew older, his parents went to great pains to hide his dalliances with men. When one of those men was found dead, throat mangled and face covered in lipstick, it became impossible to keep Job's proclivities out of the spotlight. His family sent him to St. Valentine's. They have some hope that the esteemed institution will correct the boy as the parents never could, but failing that, it should keep him out of Texas until he's old enough to be his own problem.

The truth is, of course, that Job is a vampire. One of his beaux had turned him in the hopes of keeping him forever. Instead, Job found the responsibility of adding yet another appetite to his repertoire of vices to be more than he could handle, and got himself shipped to Massachusetts.

Job flaunts his disdain for restraint and social norms. Every week his hair is a different color and he often alternates between the school's men's and women's uniforms. He has no admiration for St. Valentine's reputation or rules and he's determined to turn the next couple of years into a vacation suitable for exiled royalty.

The Hall of Power
St. Valentine's School for the Accomplished plays host to a long-running conspiracy of would-be future leaders. These students meet in the dead of night to share secrets and practice occult rituals in pursuit of long-term success. Many alumni of the school who served in The Hall have gone on to become famous performers and esteemed politicians but in turn they each owe a severe debt. To whom, or what, is not clear.

Chira Clark

Chira Clark woke up in a hospital room. That's her first memory, the bubblegum anaesthesia smell lingering in her sinuses and the IV trickling poison into her blood. The white-coats explained to her that there had been an accident, that they had had to operate on her. Her parents stood at her bedside, wringing their hands. Underneath the thin hospital blanket, there were stitches - stitches everywhere, sealing limbs to body, body to itself, none of which felt like her own. Only her mind was her own. But it wasn't what it was when they wheeled her in to the ER, or so her parents said.
She remembered a different name, a different set of interests - she even walked and talked and sang differently from the girl who had gone to sleep.

But the surgery had worked, the doctors said. They sent her home with a clean bill of health and instructions to keep the stitches clean until the body absorbed them on its own.

Her parents tolerated her. She wasn't their daughter, she was never what they wanted, but they tolerated her. At least she was alive, she heard her father say in low tones, when he thought she was asleep.

Eventually, Chira's parents sat her down and had a talk. This situation is untenable, they said. We need to do something. Chira nodded and bit her lip to keep from crying. The solution her parents found was to send her to a New England boarding school - close enough to home, they said, laughing, with the understanding that this impostor-daughter would not be paying them any more visits.

So Chira packed her bags, and she left.

Chira is a tall, twitchy young woman with gangly limbs that look too long for her. She has a long, gaunt face, sunken blue eyes, and a wide mouth; her blonde hair is short and unkempt, in almost a stylish way. Sometimes she stoops to hide her height. Mostly she wears long jeans or sweatpants, and while she vastly prefers shirts that will cover up her stitches, she likes to wear tank tops as long as she's on her own and there are no mirrors around.

Room 101
Rumor has it that there's a secret room somewhere in St. Valentine's. Reports vary on what happened there to make it so secret, but they all agree that it's a classroom that's been bricked and painted over. If you go along knocking on every wall in the school, you might find it, but who has time for that?

...I'm sorry. I can't seem to remember any of the rest.

Mikey Kearney

If you looked at Mikey Kearney's report card, you'd probably think he's stupid. Of course, that's not true at all; he's quite intelligent and maybe even a prodigy of the arts. Too bad he's almost too lazy to get up in the morning. And if he does get out of bed, he might be too lazy to climb over the piles of dirty clothes, comic books and takeout containers covering the floor of his dorm room. At least he keeps himself clean; if only he could clean up his act, maybe he'd do better than straight C's and F's! It's a miracle he's made it to junior year.

When he's not sleeping through class, Mikey's cheerful, friendly and maybe even energetic; he pours that excess energy into soccer and video games. He constantly wins awards and honors for contributions to the local art community. He's tall, lean, and fairly handsome, and is more than a bit of a flirt.

You'd think he'd be pretty popular...except that he likes men, and he doesn't care who knows. He doesn't think it's a big deal, and he always has a witty retort for the guys that pass by in the hall that aren't quite secure in their own sexualities. Even then, it's hard to break away from the prejudices of American high school students.

Oh, and he's a werewolf. That's not really a big deal, either; he hasn't had an "episode" in years, and luckily he was small enough last time that all he managed to do was demolish his parents' living room. He still owes them for the china cabinet.

His parents sent him to St. Valentine's hoping that it'd kick-start his work ethic. Their plan hasn't worked very well.

See you in the

Ro Talbot

Ro has carefully cultivated her image as a too-cool-for-school, devil-may-care, chainsmoking punk. She rails against "the man", shows up to class just often enough not to get expelled, and never passes up an opportunity to get one over on an authority figure. She also claims to be Wiccan, though even she describes herself as "pretty much the worst Wiccan ever". What she doesn't tell anyone is that the rituals she practices have real power. She welcomes speculation, especially since bad things mysteriously tend to happen to people who cross her, but prefers the truth of the matter to remain mysterious. She knows there's power in mystery - more power to be had in fear and speculation than in people actually knowing what she can and cannot do. Contrary to her image, she's very, very interested in power. Being raised by intensely overbearing (though well-meaning) parents can do that to a girl. For Ro, the best feeling in the world is the feeling of freedom. She relishes feeling like she can do whatever she want, push any boundary, and stay untouchable.

Ro sees St. Valentines mostly as a new opportunity, a new level of freedom she's never had before. She gets to live away from her parents! She's eager to see what kind of mischief she can get up to...but all the same, she doesn't want to push too hard. She's earned this, damnit. Despite avoiding class as if she's allergic, she worked hard on her own time to pull good grades so that her parents would trust her enough to send her here. She doesn't plan to let herself slip up. After all, she may hate the establishment, but that doesn't mean she has to fight it from the outside. No, she's determined to set her sights high. Having her cake and eating it too would be the ultimate victory.

Smokers' Council

Outside the doors to the science wing, the rebels, outcasts and "bad kids" gather. They're friendly enough to anyone who comes by, but anyone who talks with them for long enough can notice they have some kind of unspoken hierarchy. Rumours abound about those high up in the group, mostly to the tune of suggesting they have something to do with the running of the school. This supposedly powerful group, whoever it may include, is jokingly referred to as the "Smokers' Council" by those both inside and outside the outcast crowd. Most students seem to agree that the rumours have some truth to them - but to what extent?

Questions Time!

Job: When did you learn you were gay? Who did you lose your virginity to?

Your beaux turned you - so you're a vampire now. But you've got those crosses around your waist. Do they have some power over you? Do any of the standard vampire fears - the Sacrament, sunlight, garlic, running water - do anything for (or to) you?

Did any members of the Cameron family go to St. Valentine's in the past? If so, what was their legacy - what did they say to you before you came here?

What counts as a "home" for your ban against crossing if uninvited? Can you go into classrooms? Other students' dormitories? What about an individual student's bedroom?

Chira: Someone at the hospital made you feel better once. Who was it, and why?

What's the one place you can never look at on your body - the scars, the sutures - without crying?

When you're nervous, how do you deal with stress? Do you have an obsessive habit or nervous tic?

Mikey: What are your most and least favourite comic book runs and why?

You say you haven't had an episode in years. Do you have your whatever you call it - your lycanthropy, your Urge, your dark side - under control? Does it only come out to play when you want it to? Or do you have calendars circled and chains under your bed for the bad nights each month? Or does something else trigger your changes?

You made a piece of art that everyone else thought was blasphemy. It almost got you kicked out of school. What was it?

When did you learn you were bi?

Just kidding; I realized I was gay when I first saw my brother's best friend Sam Green lifting weights in our family's workout room. Not coincidentally, I lost my virginity to Sam Green.

Well you know, he didn't exactly give me the schooling on this whole vampire thing. He just wanted an immortal fucktoy to keep him company, that loving creepy shithead. So I can only tell you what I know from experience. Sunlight would ruin my perfect pale skin, so I don't abide by it. Garlic is overused in most dishes. And I only drink filtered water. No tap for me, thanks.

Seriously, though, everything you heard about sunlight is true. That piss-ant skeezlord who wants me to call him "master" gave me a magic... well he calls it a gorget, but it's totally a collar. Like for dogs? It pisses me off to wear his kink-trinket, but I need it to get around during the day. If I lost it, I'd be hosed.

The crucifixes just make me look cute. But even before I was turned, I'd hiss and back away from a proper church.

None of my immediate family went to St. Valentine's... Until me, it was Texan education only for this family. I did have an Uncle Jim who went though. He was a respected rugby flanker for the school's team. His picture is framed in the school's trophy case. When he heard his nephew was going to St. Valentine's, he promised me that I'd meet lots of interesting people who'd finally be able to cure me of my terminal Cameron-ism.

quote:

I can enter dormitory buildings, but individual living spaces are off-limits without permission. It's not usually an issue for me, though. In the rare instance where I have to insist on being invited into someone's bedroom, they assume it's some outdated case of southern etiquette.

My least favorite is this manga called Soul Girls Lightforce. I just...someone recommended it to me, they said it was really good, and the writing is okay but...the art is really skeevy. And I'm pretty sure they're supposed to be like 12! Bleh.

Yeah, I can control it, as long as I'm sober, anyway. All those years ago I kind of got into dad's liquor cabinet without really knowing what it was. Talk about a hangover! I try to stay away from that sort of stuff these days.

Last year I made a replica of the Eiffel Tower out of dildos. Don't ask me how I got that many on school grounds. Just let me assure you that they're only lightly used at most...or at least that's what everyone said. The principal was furious, but I saw him smuggle one out of the pile when they were being thrown in the dumpster. Hope he doesn't catch anything!

Those are some very personal questions, friend. I can answer them, I guess.

Number one. The sur. The sur. The sur-sur-surgeon who oversaw my opppperations was actually a very nice woman. She always made sure I was comfortable and had a lot of water. She even sat by my bed and talked to me. Trying to get me to remember. My. My lll-life before. She might not have done a very good job f-fffixxxxing me, but my body is my. My. My fffault.

Number two. All of it. Next question.

Number three. Which one do you want me to pick? All of them? I would need more hands for that. But that might not be a problem. Ha. Hhhhah. Sorry. I touch my fingers together. I tap things. I have trouble speaking, as you see. Sometimes I pick the ssssstitches that never healed. The doc-doc-doctors said not to do that. That it would make it worse. How could it get worse?

Can I go lay down, now?
