No man ever did me so much good, or enemy so much harm, but I repaid him with ENDLESS SHITPOSTING
That's good to hear. It always sucks when something unexpected turns up and hits you for six on emotional problems you didn't realise you were having. I had a breakdown at the start of this year with triggers being similar concerns. At the end of the day exercise is probably the single best thing you can do, everything you do on this earth is channelled through your physical form and if you gently caress that up you've got a pretty serious bottleneck. You're not your bank account or your anime collection, if your physical or mental health is on the fritz then everything else is just window dressing. With that in mind, I find it's good to do something completely new or something you used to enjoy but don't do anymore because you're busy playing grown up. For me it's mushrooms or something, learning a new language, starting a weird new hobby. Something to make life more interesting and break out of the rut. On top of tackling career and fitness goals, of course.

Welp. Just learn from it I guess. Accept it as a stupid thing thing you did and don't read any response if it shows up (unless you still need to be in contact via email to sort out leases or whatever). But gently caress, you know all this already.

I hear they have socialised medicine over in Europe which I think means that you have to dodge death panels but maybe if you're not on their list of people to kill they can help with your cough?

Don't get me started on insurance. Actually no it's too late I'm already started. I'm not registered with the Italian health service partly because of the Italian government (wasn't legally a resident for the first 14 months because Italol) and partly because my ex-girlfriend was utterly convinced that we were covered for *~*reasons*~* (being EU citizens and residents? I never understood it but she was adamant) and no matter how many times I tried to fight her about it and figure it out she was steadfast that even if we didn't enrol we were technically covered for emergencies or some poo poo, and her Italian was way better than mine, especially in formal government speak, so it was one of those things where I was too busy with other more urgent things and never got sick enough for it to become a problem. I don't know how she managed to go to the doctor several times and get treated at zero/minimum cost, I think it was a nepotism thing, it was the aunt's personal doctor. But by the time I said enough was enough and decided to go get loving registered, it was too late, because being currently unemployed means it would cost me a shitload in upfront contributions, and by halfway through the year I already knew I was moving to England for 6+months so it could wait til I got back and be on the NHS in the meantime (which has now changed to moving to Berlin indefinitely). But now I'm moving to Berlin the health insurance situation there is even weirder, it's legally required but the fact that I've been living in Italy without demonstrable health insurance is somehow potentially a huge problem, and trying to get health insurance without a job in Germany is also something that's difficult to sort out unless you can carry over your pre-existing EU insurance reference, yet to get a job you need to live there and be registered with the govt (another problem, the waiting list is about 2 months for those offices to get your Anmeldung, without which you can't work or get an apartment or get a bank account or do anything) and as soon as you step off the plane you're supposed to have health care, as I understand it.

None of these problems exist for rich fucks who can just pay several grand to get maximum-scale self-employed insurance for the couple months til they get set up, or for people who don't make a habit of moving to countries where they don't speak the language and then relying on their girlfriends to not be full of poo poo. Ironically she has spent so much time working in England these past couple years that whenever she needed a doctor or a prescription she just generally sorted it out in England (while I was stuck in Rome hoping not to get hit by a bus or that that lump is benign). Which was what I was going to do when I moved there and got residency and a job and thus on the NHS, but, you know... dumped.

Man I'm not ready to be a grown up, this poo poo sucks

Also Italy is so 100% probably the single worst country in Europe to play being a grown up in, in terms of being officially registered and legally compliant and yadda yadda.. If you want to do everything above the board here, as an individual or a business, you're going to wind up with a shotgun in your mouth three months later. Nothing works, there are about a million mutually contradictory laws and regulations and nobody in any government office has the training or work ethic to help you out, so what you do in 99.99% of situations is just talk to people and figure out what rules you absolutely have to abide by and which you can slide by, and what the easiest and most direct way is of kind of slipping your name into the pile of papers so that when someone checks it all seems legit. That's Italy and it's not a great basis to move on to other places in Europe that actually expect you to have the stuff that the EU legally requires you to have. It's like that foreign exchange kid at university whose parents have paid his fees and he isn't allowed to be kicked out but he doesn't know how to read or write English and every few days you catch him trying to steal exam papers from your office. I am now that kid after his parents lost all their money, phoney degree in one hand as he goes around begging people for jobs and not understanding when they're asking him for a CV and reference and any demonstrable knowledge whatsoever

e: One idea, if it all goes tits up, is to take like a 3-month english teaching course (ugh) in bumfuck nowhere in one of the EU countries whose names I can't spell. That way I'd get residency, a bank account, health insurance, a bit of money, food and a roof over my head. Basically just so that when I start again properly in Berlin or wherever I can say "ignore the 2 years in Italy, there's nothing there, but look I have actual grown up references like a record of health insurance and whatever else that non-Italian countries expect you to have"

And how many times do I have to tell you, the 'e' is silent, it's the 'O' that's loud

Also I'm looking further into health insurance in Germany and the very real fear has dawned on me that my only real option may be to move to the UK to find work and hop on the NHS until I can use that to move to another country. Health insurance in Europe is crazy complicated and I have not put myself in the best situation to tackle it. Lord almighty

Also this is like a solid 50% my ex-girlfriend's fault, I kept bugging her about it but she swore up and down we were covered in emergencies and it didn't matter, and kept getting upset and offended whenever I didn't trust her on it. And her Italian is way better than mine so I couldn't have gone to register without her, so it just.. got pushed back behind things that were more urgent. Until I'm utterly hosed and she's just gallavanting about in London doing whatever the gently caress she wants because lahdeefuckingdah

I'm ok. Never made it to the UK, was there on holiday for a week helping the (ex) girlfriend get set up, then back in Rome for a couple months to get everything ready and move to London with her. But after that fell through I wound up moving to Berlin on a few weeks' notice, been here for a month. Got a job interview in a few hours for a soulless call centre position, apartment hunting fell through at the last minute (again) so as of tomorrow I have no place to live and no couches left to crash on. Will have to figure something out. To be honest I'm finding it a bit hard to care about any of it.

How are things with you?

gently caress, good luck with the job dude. This is about the time where BCR reminds us that life is suffering. Or alternatively embrace your inner Pangloss - this is the best of all possible worlds.

As for me, right now? Drinking scotch and watching badbadnotgood clips on youtube. More generally, pretty good. Spent the past three months in a funk about the break up with my ex, but also eating right and exercising heaps. Re-read some old Hermann Hesse which helped. And then met a lovely girl last week and am spending the day with her tomorrow which will be really nice.

Haha yeah life is generally feeling like one of those "why fuckin bother" endeavours these days.

I tried reading Siddhartha but couldn't get more than a couple chapters in. I made the mistake of reading all of Gone With The Wind all alone in Berlin just after the ex dumped me, not a good book choice for that context. Amazing book though.

Exercise is pretty much the only thing that brings me catch-free happiness these days, as soon as I find out my schedule and get settled I'm signing up to a gym. I might even sign up to a boxing gym and get absolutely destroyed in the workout regime until I throw in the towel - that'd definitely take my mind off poo poo for a while.

It's great that you've met someone but take it slow and don't get too invested. The rebound is always a hugely complicated thing and super easy to cock up, no matter your (or her) intentions - you're operating in a minefield as far as your emotional/mental health goes, so you have to be extra careful. I think the general rule is "in the hypothetical where your ex tries to take you back, if your answer is anything other than an unemotional 'no', you're not ready to date again". I'm definitely taking it slow in that regard, I want nothing more than to jump back into someone's arms as though it were the goddamn womb itself but I know I'm noway near ready for that, I'd be doing myself and the girl a disservice. Will actually have to have a chat to the german girl about it, she is starting to get girlfriend-y. But then I'm only at two months post-dump and I've been unemployed and moving country etc etc, 3 months might be long enough to stabilise if you're employed, have friends and are otherwise secure and the main change was just your partner. Just be careful, I guess.

The interview went well so I'm relaxing with a beer and watching star trek the next generation

Looks like I got the job (as far as a berlin startup can assure anyone of anything)! Remains to be seen how long I'll stay and whether it's worth keeping, but the salary is decent at least so money won't be a problem. It's actually 200 euros more per month take-home pay than what I was earning in Rome for far more skilled/technical work.. thanks for nothing, Italy.

As the searing pain of the taser slowly fades, Sulla pulls himself off the ground. Unfamiliar and grotesque thoughts flow through his head. loving Polish cockroaches everywhere, he thought, parasites sucking the life out of Europe. HITLER SHOULD HAVE FINISHED THE loving JOB.

Woah. That was deeply uncool. Sulla shakes his head violently, trying to rid his mind of the ugly train of thought. He smiles at the Polish girl, reassuring her that the taser didn't do any lasting damage. "Fancy a joint?", he asks, reaching into his pocket for his lighter. He pulls it out and stares at it in confusion. Was this his? The taser must have messed with his mind. But why own such a thing? The engraved "SS" on the lighter gleams softly in the light.

This post is almost a year overdue, but this game is clearly not gonna be revived. Apologies to everyone for talking up the next section then abandoning it - particularly FS who came in with a really neat role and got to post like once ever.

Despite the poor ending I had a shitload of fun running the game. It felt that we were just hitting the stride too - the haunted shack and the Big Green fight were both great, it felt like everyone had become comfortable with both the characters they'd designed and the mechanics of the game.

I'm considering setting up a Hunter game in a few months assuming that there's interest. Hunter looks to be a lot easier in terms of mechanics: you're regular people using strength of numbers, ingenuity and some minor occult powers to take down monsters rather than having to learn about a dozen different spooky skills, power levels, etc. It also can be played with less grimdark and more John Carpenter's Vampires, which would be fun - LP's Hunter game certainly was.

I'll put the call out for the game both here and in the auspol thread if / when it's ready to go. Thanks again for playing!
