My bathroom ceiling sort of collapsed and once I got all the debris cleared away I was left with this:



As you can see some of the slats are exposed but a bit of the original plaster remains. My question is why is the visible side of the plaster dark brown? There was a thin piece of paneling glued to it if that is relevant. Also the plaster could be upwards of 80 years old. If you need any more info to determine answer let me know. Thanks.

It's probably lead-based paint. Is it really shiny? Do not sand this, it's better if you just cover it up in place rather than spend a grand having it remediated.

It is pretty shiny. I guess it's a matter of taste but why would one paint a ceiling dark brown?

If you eat a flake and it's sweet then it's almost certainly lead based.

Yeah, pretty much. I saw that and immediately recognized it as the glue they use to attach paneling to walls and floors...you know, mastic. That's what it looks like if it's been in your house for a few decades.
