Well, the set-up I have is that, like in HG, there was a war - it was essentially Unova against Nihon (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh - Japan, basically), with Kalos allying themselves with Nihon. There was also significant rebel movement within Unova, as well. Unova, with its main powers in Castelia, Nimbasa, and Opelucid, manage to win and take control over the other regions, and at this point, is being led by President Ghetsis Harmonia. To punish the rebels within Unova, they're exiled into the Western and Eastern parts. So, there's basically nine 'districts', although I'm still calling them regions in this - 1 is Kanto, 2 is Johto, 3 is Hoenn, 4 is Sinnoh, 5 is Eastern Unova, 6 is Western Unova, 7 is Coastal Kalos, 8 is Central Kalos, and 9 is Mountain Kalos. So, say, someone from Hoenn would be referred to as being from region 3. The Capitol basically rules over all of them, including things like most of their resources being sent there, although it's not as specialised as in HG. It's pretty common for alliances to form between geographically similar regions, like Kanto and Johto, or the two Unovans, or the three Kalosians (especially Central and Mountain, although that's because two of the mentors from there are romantically involved), and there's nothing really resembling Career districts. Pokemon training is heavily restricted, and is only really possible once someone reaches the age of nineteen and is no longer eligible for the Games, and with the express permission of Central Unova (now calling itself the Capitol), and there really isn't anything much resembling a Pokemon League. When tributes arrive in the Capitol, during training, they're allowed to select one starter, and there's the opportunity to catch others in the Arena, with Pokeballs being something valuable to grab during the Cornucopia or to get from sponsors. After the Games, the Victor is permitted to keep one Pokemon - they can keep their starter or keep one they caught. The kids are actually all pretty excited about this, since most of them never actually believed they'd be able to have a Pokemon. There are a few non-victor and non-tribute characters involved, like Diantha (Kalosian-born, now a celebrity - basically taking Caesar Flickerman's role, except actually sympathetic and also involved in the rebellion - she and Sycamore are best friends), but the tributes and mentors for the Quell are... 50th Games - 2nd Quarter Quell (one mentor is selected to go back into arena, for a total of 27 tributes) 1 - Kanto - Red (18) and Leaf (14). Mentors: Janine* (won 41st games, now 25), Lance (won 36th games, now 30) 2 - Johto - Ethan (15) and Lyra (12). Mentors: Morty* (won 38th games, now 30), Kris (won 47th games, now 19) 3 - Hoenn - May (16) and Brendan (17). Mentors: Steven* (won 28th games, now 36), Liza (won 43rd games, now 20) 4 - Sinnoh - Dawn (12) and Lucas (13). Mentors: Byron* (won 20th games, now 48), Cynthia (won 30th games, now 35) 5 - Eastern Unova - Hilda (16) and Hilbert (16). Mentors: N* (won 45th games, now 21), Lenora (won 27th games, now 41) 6 - Western Unova - Rosa (15) and Nate (14). Mentors: Roxie* (won 44th games, now 23), Hugh (won 49th games, now 15) 7 - Coastal Kalos - Tierno (16) and Korrina (18). Mentors: Valerie* (won 42nd games, now 24), Grant (won 40th games, now 27) 8 - Central Kalos - Serena (17) and Calem (17). Mentors: Augustine* (won 31st games, now 36), Drasna (won 8th games, now 58) 9 - Mountain Kalos - Shauna (16) and Trevor (15). Mentors: Lysandre* (won 32nd games, now 34), Olympia (won 29th games, now 39) The asterisked ones are the mentors who are sent back in for the Quell. A lot of those characters get killed off and a lot don't really have a huge role, it mostly focuses on Sycamore, Lysandre, Serena, and Shauna. (And yeah, Sycamore and Lysandre are the two victors who are romantically involved. There's also several other relationships around, but it mostly focuses on them.) Oh, and yes, N is still Ghetsis' son. Ghetsis intentionally had him reaped because he knew N had rebellion sympathies and was trying to get him killed off - he actually managed to survive, so he tried again with the Quell. Initially, N being reaped was meant to show that even those in the Capitol weren't necessarily safe.

For that matter, what about a Spacer Shepard's mom, Captain Hannah Shepard? I've always wondered about her, outside of what very little context we get. (Her turning down a promotion to Admiral in ME2, her being something of a 'good luck charm' as Hackett puts it in ME3.) [Not that I have high hopes outside of personal canon: she's XO of the dreadnought Kilimanjaro in 1, Captain of the Orizaba in 2. Sounds like a high-priority target for Reapers, to me, but I'm a pessimist like that.] What happened to Shepard's father? Not that I mind the 'father figure' feel we get from Anderson. I'm all for that, but I'm just curious. Is the iconic Shepard name inherited from Hannah, or the unmentioned dad? I headcanon the former, for what it's worth. Aaaanyway, if it isn't clear, I have TONS of thoughts/ideas for ME. Might try it next year's NaNo. Had some minor success already with a Joker fanfic that I spat out in a hurry and entered in a FB contest. I'd like to explore all of the 'unspoken' moments of Shep's story. Emotional reactions to missions, down-time with squadmates, maybe even post-trilogy recovery. Gotta love Bioware for giving us so much to work with in the ME universe. ^_^
