Hi T&T forumgoers,

We're going to Nassau in January, and we'll be staying in a resort (its name escapes me). But there's one problem- I'd rather avoid the resorts. I really like to get out of the resort areas, mingle with the locals, and eat some local food.

But I've never been to the Bahamas. What's there to do outside of the resort areas? I'm especially interested in visiting some of the local restaurants/bars.

Always working
I'm really close, in Grand Cayman, but alas I've only been briefly to Nassau so I cannot recommend anything on top of my head. What I can say is that you will easily find nice local restaurants outside of the resort, that's not a worry.

I'm thinking of starting a Caribbean megathread, if the mods approve, not sure if there's enough interest but that might be able to bring together more data on all the small islands around here.

Glad to hear that there's life outside of the resorts. :)

Any recommended places in the Nassau area that you might've heard about? And for what it's worth- I'd sure as heck support a Caribbean islands megathread. There's just so much to know about the region, and a centralized thread with local knowledge would be really great.

I recently spent a week on Cat Island for my Honeymoon in October. The weather was great, the beaches were the most beautiful I've ever seen. The water was crazy clear... Even 50 feet out from the shore I could still see the bottom. The house we rented included a private beach. I only saw about 6 other people on the beach the entire time we were there, and it's something like a mile or 2 long stretch of beach.

We only headed 'into town' once, but everybody was so kind and welcoming. We got some delicious conch salad and conch fritters. My wife asked if she had any live conch to see, and the owner happily obliged, showing us a couple she had awaiting slaughter. Hatchet was sitting just next to the bucket of conch.

The big drawback was the bugs. So many bugs as soon as the sun sets. Basically we had to hide in the house at dark.

I believe the plane tickets from Nassau to Cat island was like $180 round trip, so it might not be worth it as an excursion, but perhaps there are some closer island that are cheaper to get to and just as charming and welcoming.

Rent a scoot and go explore the island. It was highly enjoyable when I was there.

I've heard about the conch salad! Is it worth the trip, or is there other food that we're better off focusing on? We aren't in Nassau for very long, so we need to make every minute count. :)

Which part of the island did you spend most time scooting around in? I've heard that some parts of the island have crime issues, but I'm not sure how accurate that information is.

I think you should be able to find some Conch Salad on pretty much any island in the Bahamas. It's basically just raw Conch chopped up with some peppers and onions with some citrusy juice. The acid in the peppers and juice cures the fish to kill the bacteria and such. It's pretty good, but mostly just a novelty - not really something you can get in the states (at least in my area). If you are in the Bahamas, seek it out, but maybe don't make that the sole purpose. It's a great refresher on a hot day... Maybe with a Kalik!

Ask me about losing 200lbs, and becoming the Viking God of W&W.
We went to the Ardastra gardens and had a great time, especially feeding the parrots with apples.

come to think of it, is staying at Atlantis some people feel the need to have false modesty about, if I were staying there I'd let everyone know all the time.. Anyone who has seen the place would understand I think

We want the ball & We're going to score
Not sure if this is valid for the OP since they said they were going in January but I spent a week in Nassau about 4 years ago and here's my 2 cents.. I stayed at the Riu all inclusive resort located right beside Atlantis on Paradise Island. We ate and drank at the home hotel but took in the Atlantis casino and grounds regularly. The Riu had a small beach front but sufficient.

We did go to use the Atlantis waterpark which had a great lazy river with elevator and variety of slides that you never need to get out of your inner tube to do. There are a bunch of waterslides and 2 go through a shark tank. If you just go to the hotel it was like $100 for dayuse per person. One tip we received was to book at one of the cheaper hotels nearby that do not have a pool and they almost all give you access to Atlantis. We booked a room for one night to get the pool access for the 2 days on each side of the night we "Stayed". it worked out to about 40% the cost to go through Atlantis directly. The front desk said many people did what we did.

As for Nassau, there was a small ferry from Paradise island to Nassau (not long or far). There's a large market for souvenirs and such. There wasn't a cruise ship in that day so deals were able to be found. We had some fresh conch from a street vendor too. There were a slew of standard bars (Senior Frogs, etc) nearby as well to go for a drink.
