spankmeister posted:-XIII had some nasty copy protection scheme which was hard to crack (TAGES, I believe) and cracked versions would work initially but have degrading playability where it would become harder and harder to move and aim and such until eventually becoming unplayable. didn't this backfire spectacularly (or a similar system in another game) because many pirates would chalk it up to the game being poorly coded or having a memory leak or something and badmouth the quality of the game itself? also wouldn't surprise me if people with legit performance issues were ignored by support due to being treated as pirates also i remember unreal 2 had the opposite problem where its early implementation of securom was such a resource hog "game optimization" articles were legit-recommending people crack the game because just doing that would double the framerate

Snapchat A Titty posted:these are dumb as heck but hold a special place in my heart anyway Red Sector Megademo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_6dFgGHdNo Red Sector came out with a "demo maker" where you could script and tune a standard library of effects and then save the result to its own bootable disc. It caused some drama at my high school when some students made some demos with it for a programming project, and passed it off as their own work.

I remembered Odyssey the other day. It was a 40 minute demo with a storyline which I thought was cool at the time, but watching it again it's atrocious Imagine a game intro from the nineties with engrish storytelling like the "war was beginning" zero wing intro, but stretching over 40mins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TWX2gzRz5Y
