I took a long, slow drag from my cigarette. "Dark jazz, you say?" "It's a style of music heavily influenced by film noir soundtracks, specially Miles Davis's Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud. I think you'll find it very... seductive" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeW76kLiUDo I leaned back in my chair and tapped the ash from my cigarette. "Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud was almost sixty years ago, I'm gonna need a little more to go on." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_1-zwBsvjw The dame shifted in her chair and something else shifted, too. She took out a cigarette and I offered her a light. "These days you'll usually find dark jazz hanging out with dark ambient producers and a man who goes by Bong-Ra." "Bong-Ra..." "His work is renowned for its brilliance, they say Here Be Dragons could be one of the best albums ever made." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyORieDhpkg I stood up and walked to the window, looking out over the city. It was raining. "They don't have anything to do with The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation do they?" "He's one of the major players." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1SbYeD1ZyM (I won't take up writing noir screenplays.) Cymbal Monkey fucked around with this message at 00:14 on Jun 3, 2015 |

Dark jazz got its name from some really horribly racist poo poo. I really hope you close the thread and start a new one using Spookyjazz instead of Dark jazz. Otherwise great op!

There used to be a great angelfire page called Vaudeville-Sinestro that really got into depth on it but it seems to have disappeared. I think it was an italian fascist thing.

Not very funny imo Edit: I don't know why i can't find anything online about this. there's not even a wiki. There was at least a couple different records on Windham hill that were darkjazz/progstrel salutes in the late 70's. Shadowfax did one of them but I can't find it on discogs. well google has never heard of the word "progstrel" before so I guess this is either a strange joke you are making or maybe you had a weird dream or your memory implants are malfunctioning? I'll admit I do like the idea of a conspiracy theory where windham hill is secretly run by Italian fascists

Like I can't even conceptualize it. also riff-raff shows are pretty ugly and not funny either, so i stick by my earlier comment.

I love this kind of jazz! Try Bohren & der Club of Gore. Here's "Prowler": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECyfX1OR_nk And Silencio, a group heavily influenced by Angelo Badalamenti's soundtrack for David Lynch's Twin Peaks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEo0acfbM-Y I always thought "Koop Island Blues" by Koop had a nice Euro-noir feel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W3MpOU3OUU
