I live on the 7th floor of an apartment. I have just come back upstairs from a false alarm with the building fire alarm, having deposited my two terrified cats in my big bulky plastic carrier and hauled them down 7 flights of stairs. I'm exhausted. Does anyone have any suggestions for lightweight pet carriers? Maybe some sort of backpack? It was a real struggle to get them down the stairs. "Get swole" is on the todo list as well, but in the mean time... While we're at it, any tips for getting terrified cats out of their hidey holes and into a carrier would be appreciated too.

Can't vouch for quality, but these backpack carriers are on Groupon for $20 (allegedly down from $80). And this sling-style carrier is also $20.

Depends on the cats - are they easy to get into small carriers or do they put up a fight? Can they share a carrier? A low tech solution might be putting a shoulder strap on the carriers - just gotta figure a way that would be strong and hold. I used to use 2 approved to fly with carriers that were like special duffle bags for cats. However, my cats are not easy to put in their carriers, and my vet recommended hard sided, and I realized a bigger carrier made for an easier fight. Now I just push on them and they're in. I like some of those crazy cat lady pet strollers - if they'll share a carrier. Cats can figure out how to move the zipper and the last thing you want is for them to escape in a stressful situation. You can secure the zippers by twisty tieing them together when you get somewhere safe if it's a true emergency.
