Wait, something is wrong.
"In the defense against the supernatural the people are represented by two separate, yet equally important groups. The hunters, who relentlessly pursue monsters and the abominations which eat them. These are their stories."

quote:

Wards
Since 1923, the City of Chicago has been divided into 50 City Council Aldermanic wards. Each of the 50 areas is represented on the City council by one Alderman and in many social, political and economic contexts, it is reasonable to describe what part of Chicago one is from by who one's alderman is or what ward one lives in. However, using wards as the basis for comparing areas of the city over time has limited utility, due to the fact that the wards need to be redistricted every ten years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_areas_of_Chicago

quote:

”You ever thought about what the word ward means? What it really means? City this big is a magnet for things. All that life, all that energy, all focused in one spot. We got a community of elves living in the forest preserves to the north, we got the largest mercity in North America not ten miles from Navy Pier. Mostly those folks are just happy to be folks, want to get along. But not all of them. All this life draws the sort of things we worry about, things from the wrong side of the barrier. In the twenties they set up a defensive network, a series of wards that overlap and defend. You need a big power source for a major demon invasion or a hellmouth, and the wards keep that from building. Fifty wards, fifty aldermen to watch them. That’s the real Chicago Machine, and the real reason it keeps going. All that political bullshit? Nothing but smoke and mirrors. Thing is, kid, some things don’t care for wards. Vampire won’t give a poo poo, nor a demon who knows something about names, nor some punk kids playing with things better left alone. That’s where we come in. We’re the broom that sweeps clean, we keep the peace. There’s outcast angels and wizards living in this city, sure. As long as they know the rules, long as they don’t break the covenant, they can stay. Good men, beings, whatever. Best bar in the city run by an expat Demon, we can go there after work. But those types need a place to live, and they need people like us to help.

We call it the 51st Ward.

- Taylor Abernathy, Precinct Commander (ret) addressing a new recruit.

Halloween in the City of Big Shoulders was a pretty good time, to hear most folks tell it. Lots of parties, lots of costumes. Daley Plaza gets all done up, the Picasso overlooking kiosks and booths set up with pumpkin carving, face painting, acrobats, fun for the whole family. It’s a good place to be. This year, things were a little more festive than most. Cubs made it to the series for the first time in years, and they were facing down the White Sox. They’d put a hat split down the middle on the Picasso, leave it to Chicago to deface a billion dollar work of art. Series started next week, and the whole town was on edge.

Primed. Something was in the air.

Lot of energy there, all charged up. Ley lines were lit up like a Christmas tree with all the background energy, according to headquarters anyway, and that meant something was probably going to happen. So here the crew is, Daley Plaza, downtown loop. Fifteen minutes to midnight, and the place was packed. Lots of costumes, and a lot of kids still. Boys in blue are out in force, beat cops on Segways tooling around while the guys on horses mostly showed off for the tourists.

Across the street looms the single largest nexus of psychic power in the city, the Methodist Temple. Built back before anyone knew what the hell was going on, some mad genius designed the thing to be a kind of antenna for collecting and recieving psychic energy. Thing was built to code, of course, and untouchable, and nobody ever figured out what it was for. Paul, down at Jinn and Tonic, swears up and down that it was the inspiration for that building in Ghostbusters. But everybody knows Paul is full of poo poo, and nobody trusts a free demon who swears anything even if he does run a good bar.

If something was going to happen, it was going to happen here. The boys at Wolf Point would not shut up about it. So here the crew was, ready to rumble. All dressed up and no place to go...

"I'm the boss of space. That's plenty."
Robert O'Brien

Rob climbed out of the driver's seat on his pick-up truck. The tall, broadly built former combat medic cleared his throat pulling his collar up around him and adjusting his stance. The truck was a real beater with dents and scratches - it was probably a utility truck in a past life and he'd picked it up from Gurnee and the white paint was already pretty rusted and scratched back then and the last year of hunting hadn't exactly done it any favours. Hell, there was still a claw mark in the side of one of the passenger doors from where a druid decided to use it as a scratching post. He looked to his passengers in the back. "Sorry about that bit with the whole, slamming on the brakes. Guy stepped out in front of me," he grunted before growling out another curse.

He pulled one of his backpacks out the bed at the back of the truck, unzipped it produced a couple of halloween masks. One of the few times a year that wearing a mask might actually help you blend in. Of course, his was a rubber wolf-man mask. All in the best possible taste.

ALWAYS BE MECHFISHIN'
Amadeus Bannon

Halloween was a good time for a hunter like Amadeus - everybody was dressed ridiculously, and he was no different. Truth be told, it would be hard to justify a trenchcoat and katana in the middle of summer, but he just looked like a bad Highlander cosplayer to the common man (though nobody would say that to his face). He rolled his head from side to side, stretching his neck as he did so by tightening and loosening his jaw.

"Happens," he replies to the wolfman, climbing/decompressing out of the backseat. His own kit was already on him - as long as the police didn't have any questions for why he was carrying so many knives or his trademark weapon (peacebonded - event policy!) he was solid.

"Patrol around here? That was the tip. Be ready for anything."

Vikram Singh Gupta

Vikram rubs the back of his neck as he emerges from his own seat. "I can't say I expected a soft ride in the first place. It is, after all, a pickup truck." He looks over at the truck with disdain. He's carrying a large satchel, with his crossbow hidden within, along with his laptop and a number of other general tools. He grimaces as his eyes pass over the Picasso. "...of course they put a hat on it. Of course." His disgust is palpable. He pulls out his phone and begins taking notes, glancing around the area.

"I'll keep you posted if I notice anything. Besides that awful hat, I mean."

Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis
Felix Kozlow

Walking up from the Blue line, he stopped to look at what someone had chalked onto the ground.

pre:
Its about to get WEIRD!
He wondered if she should take it as an omen of things to come. This wasn't like other Samhains (one of the most celebrated days of supernatural occurrence). Something different. If the lines between the living and the dead were already thin on Samhain, tonight they might temporarily dissolve. No telling what would show up if that happened.

Felix ran his foot across the chalked message on the ground. It was his way of dismissing the omen, try to make it not come true. He had enough weird in his life. He managed to keep it balanced with everything else in his life. Having more on top of that would be irritating. The tense psychic energy he could feel made it seem like something big might happen tonight. Something big and disastrous.

He adjusted the dark grey overcoat he wore. Underneath he wore a black suit. Not exactly the de rigueur uniform of the night, but he figured he could blend in with other suits in the area. Walking down the sidewalk, he looked over at Daly Plaza. He saw the others and walked over to meet them. The whole group knew something was up tonight and he hoped they prepared the same way he did. Under his coat he had a Glock 23 pistol. He didn't like to be hauling around guns, but there was no telling what might happen tonight. That was why he wore his concealable vest, no telling what might want to take a bite out of him tonight. Felix also carried a messenger bag as well. In that he packed his portable investigation gear and a couple of other weapons. A silver cross, a large blessed knife and his "heavy artillery" for the night. And tonight it was his Ruger Super Redhawk handgun. More like hand cannon. The gun had a lot of kick in it. Good for the big things that go bump in the night. Besides the regular rounds that were chambered currently, he had two speed loaders one with armor piercing rounds and the other had extra powerful powder packed into the rounds. He wondered if he over packed for this meeting, but he figured it would be better to carry too much than too little.

Walking up to the group, he waved to them.

"Hey."

Added a few things to list of gear.

Samantha Harrow

Pushing her glasses up, the witch steps out of the truck opposite the others, walking around it to join them, half-wishing she had rode her bike here after that ride. Then again, on a night like this, it'd probably wind up vandalized or stolen, so she just grunts at Robert's apology. At Vikram's comment, she glances over at the statue, raising an eyebrow upon seeing its accouterment, before turning her gaze to the temple. She's been there before a few times before; it was definitely a place of power. You could almost feel the energy. With the arcane energy surging through the area as of late, it's probably overflowing with power. Perhaps not a good thing, but, if nothing else, it should be easy to gather energy here should things go down.

Unlike the others, Sam is packing relatively relatively lightly in terms of armaments, not having a firearms license; the only weapon on her person is a knife hidden away, though if you asked her she'd say that's all she needed. If you asked her companions, they may give... Varying opinions.

Slinging her bag over her shoulder, she glances at the others. "It was just him that wasn't coming in the truck, right?" she asks, referring to Felix. "We're good to go?"

"I'm the boss of space. That's plenty."
Rob O'Brien

"Just Felix," said Rob. "Said he had to pick up some stuff from home before comin' this way. Either that or he just didn't trust my driving skills which I can't say I blame him entirely for." He looked over the statue and shook his head, wondering how something like that could be in a place like this. Wasn't the only thing hanging over him that he was starting to get concerned about. "Anyone more magically aware than myself feelin' anything? Should we just keep our eyes open--" he paused and sniffed twice. "Popcorn's over that way if anyone wants it."

Amadeus

"They didn't say what exactly we were supposed to be looking out for. May need to call it in." He leaned on the black, wooden cane which contained the reforged holy sword, Durandal, ready for any eventuality where a real weapon was needed. The others had guns, sure, but melee was the most effective way for the majority of monsters.

He went to a newspaper dispenser and took out the latest Tribune. Always good to read between the lines in the local news when there's a big event going on. Maybe the Methodist Temple put out an ad for a special event. "Given the Temple's reputation, we may be dealing with rogue psis, is my best guess. Need more info."

I'd like to start the investigation phase by checking against Current Affairs (Headline News) - 10 to start finding out if there's anything in the papers that might give a clue beyond just 'show up at Temple. After doing that, I'll rely on Paraphysics - 9 to detect any active psi work going on.

Wait, something is wrong.
It is a busy night, and the place is packed. Warmer weather than usual, maybe, and the first Halloween in three years where it wasn't pouring rain. The crowd has a lot of older kids, the sort young enough to be excited about staying up till midnight downtown but still old enough to try to hook up. Some kind of band is cranking out family friendly covers of pop tunes, while some performers from the touring Cirque company are doing some neat work on an acrobatic rig set up. Lot of cops around, but the mood is pretty friendly so far. Mostly friendly. Some late showing from one of the theatres just got out, lot of people flooding in from that. Amadeus can't remember reading anything or hearing whatever on the nature of things, but then again the weeks leading up to Halloween usually had a hell of a lot of static on that account.

Ten minutes to midnight. Everyone can feel something, some kind of tingle building in the air. Magic was building like mad, piling up on one another in this place. Something was about to happen, but it felt strange. Grounded, almost. Not like being electrocuted, but more like being near high tension lines. All that power being channeled, all that lethal power. For Harrow the feeling is different. Tuned to another kind of energy, and the dissonance is apparent. Something is about to go down, something that hasn't touched any of the norman normals running around yet. Or maybe it has, maybe those giddy sounds of laughter are just on the edge of breaking into screams.

Brittle. That is the word for it. The air is bristle with it, for those who know where to look.

The INVESTIGATION phase will be a short one, about ten min maybe possibly! Smoke em if you got em

Vikram

For Vikram, observing everyone constantly is normal. He can't turn it off. That man kissing the girl - married, and she's not his wife. The woman over there, pickpocket. The young boy to the left, high as a kite and loving it. The man at the corner, got bitten by a vampire within the past few weeks. Consensually, at least. Notable but not important.

Midnight is coming, and midnight is a dangerous time, especially in a place like this, on a night like this.

He makes some notes on his phone, then casually begins to pace, eyes flicking across the crowd for even more points of interest. Perhaps even useful ones.

The overcoat and the vest made the warm weather seem even more so, but if something happened he would be ready to face it. At least he hoped he would be ready to face it. Something would occur tonight, but he couldn't be sure just what it would be.

"Yeah, I needed grab some stuff from home. Figured it was easier getting myself here instead of having Rob drive over to get me."

Felix looked down at his phone to see if he got any messages. Someone in the paranormal community might have heard that something was happening tonight. If someone in the supernatural community heard something, then Uvall would know it. Uvall had his ear to the grapevine picking up all sorts of news and gossip. Unless it was some outside group being up to something.

On the ride over he had been racking his brain to figure out who would benefit from creating this situation. Did someone or some group want to make a big name for themselves? Maybe some group wanted to pull off some wide ranging spell to affect the area. This energy could be used for a lot of things, which led Felix to wonder what someone might want to do with this energy.

Wait, something is wrong.
Taking the place in at a glance, Vikram sees much. The eyes of one such as he take in more through a moment than others might perceive in a lifetime. Patterns in humanity, webs of connection spiralizing out from each individual like sugar crystals in water. Flows move around him, stories in an eyeblink, and in these he sees the ripples in that stream. The places where rocks lay below the surface. Near one of the kiosks, a woman has been looking at the same few shirts for the past five minutes; neither is the same size and neither is her size. Across the street a man changes a tire, making little progress. By the fountains two men, onstably a couple, stand with shoulders squared and pay little attention to each other or the crowd. All four have their eyes fixed on one thing. The Picasso. They stare as if expecting something, with eyes filled with a mix of desire, hunger, and lust.

The sage can feel the power gathered, but to what end it might be is lost on him. The shadow of the tallest church in Chicago is here, or it would be if there were a sun to cast a shadow, and that place has no small amount of supernatural history. It is an antenna for talking to God directly, it is said, and several incidents in the past bear this out. As for the rest? Felix looks around, sees Uvall in the drat crowd. He is near one of those lovely stand up tables, alone in the crowd. Likely his demonic aura keeps the crowd at bay, leaving him virtually unseen and at peace in the mass of humanity. He has about a half dozen hot dogs and several beers lined in front of him on the small table, and is methodically munching down as he watches the people go by. He looks expectant, cheerful. He spots Felix and gives a little cheery wave.

Something else catches his eye. The place is arranged in the form of a summoning circle. The booths, the lights, the whole thing. Not a common one, but he recognizes it. Something to channel power, build it, direct it. All aimed right at that big iron loving state. Someone had to be around here, guiding things.

He scrunched up his face in disgust. A ceremony like this could bring in something big and nasty. All these people here would be in danger. Maybe who ever is behind this is planning on offering up these people as a sacrifice or something. Even if that person isn't, they'll be in danger once the ritual goes off.

"We're standing in a summoning circle. Some rear end in a top hat wants to bring something big here. I'm not sure what, but its coming. Probably at midnight. And someone is behind it. Somebody around here is organizing this ritual. We need to find them." Felix waves at Uvall.

"I see my contact. Maybe he'll have some clue about what's going on here. Sam, any chance you could find the person in charge of the ceremony going on here? If we find them, then we might be able to stop whatever is about to happen."

Felix walks over to Uvall.

Vikram glances over at Felix. "A summoning circle? Well, that's...pleasant." He holds up his phone, showing photographs he's quickly snapped of the crowd. "As for the who, let me explain. Four people are watching the Picasso. Expectant. They're involved here, I'm certain. Look at their stances - too casual, but with a certain tenseness. Waiting. They are - and don't turn to stare - the woman over there by the shirts. No two the same size, and no one looks at t-shirts for five minutes straight. The man changing the tire could not go slower if he were doing it with his teeth. Those two by the fountain. No couple people-watches without seeing anyone or spends time together without looking or speaking to each other. They are all four hungry for whatever is coming here."

He glances at Amadeus and Rob.

"As for whether any are in charge, I could not tell you. But they are certainly involved."

Samantha

After the revelation that this is a summoning circle, Samantha begins thinking. "Well, it's not predictable, exactly," she says in response to Amadeus. "If we were to disrupt part of it, such as by desecrating the area, or using a spell of my own, it might stop the whole thing; on the other hand, it might just cause the ritual to go wrong, which could be even worse. There's a lot of power flowing tonight; it surging and bursting out uncontrollable might level the block. Or still call something, but leave it uncontrolled. Or do nothing. It depends on how the ritual is set up, among other things." As she talks, she begins channeling power, preparing a spell of her own. While she could try blocking the magic outright, something this big likely has multiple moving parts; only interfering with one could have unpredictable effects. She'd rather not risk accidentally removing the ritual's failsafe and making things worse. So, she begins by examining the ritual itself, using her magic to analyze the foreign magic. Once she knows how it works, she can figure out how to make it stop.

"I can say, however, that trying to forcefully dispel it would probably take a very long time, given how big this ritual is and how much energy I'd need to oppose it. We'd almost definitely be caught in the meantime, so unless I can find a weak point in the ritual we're going to have to deal with the goons regardless most likely. So, get ready for that."

Path of Magic - 18 to cast a Greater Sense Magic spell to analyze the summoning ritual, figuring out how it works, what the key points are, etc. Minimum cost is 6 (+2 for Sense, x3 for one Greater effect); I'm not quite sure what modifiers are needed here (maybe a +1 for range?), but as Sam has a mana pool of 21 she can probably fuel the whole thing from within regardless, so she's just tapping her reserves rather than gathering power.

"Tire," says Rob, moving over to the back of his pickup truck. He opens the small box that he has in the bed of his truck and pulls out a big, silver socket wrench. He spins it around once before looking over at the guy that seems to be struggling with the tire. "Time to go be helpful," he says before striking off towards him, holding the wrench.

On his way there, he tries to not look menacing, realising he's a big guy walking towards an unaware dude with a metal club in his hands.

"Hey pal," he calls once he's within a few steps. "You need a hand?" he asks, heading on over there. He looks the guy over to check if there's anything visibly wrong with him. He doesn't really seem to stop until he's close enough to swing that tire-iron if needed but not close enough for it to look like a mugging is about to happen.

Felix gets a big ol' grin from Uvall. "I'm here for the same reason you are. To watch the show!" He pushes one of the sausages in a bun and a beer towards the man. "Have a nosh, it's about to start." After a moment, "You know what's going down?"

Rob scares the poo poo out of the guy, but only for a second. As Rob looms, the dude shifts his gaze past him, to the Picasso. "No, no," he says. "Almost got this. Called AAA and everything, no problem buddy, none at all." Rob can smell the stink of fear on him, fear and something else underneath. Arousal, anticipation, a lot of things. Fucker was excited as hell about something happeneing, and scared of more than just him.

Samantha gets her snapshot of the place, a kind of image. The power is strange; and she suddenly realizes most of what is here is not to bring something in, but to keep something out. A lay person wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but in her Mage's Sight the traces of a dome are all around the square, and a sort of pressure, a holy energy, pressing in. The rest of it beneath the dome is pretty stock, although she can tell one thing clearly. The four people pointed out? Every one of them is about to die, and knows it.

Two minutes left.

That sense in the pit of his stomach that something about this guy wasn't right. Sam has ideas running through her head on how to stop the ritual, considering the different possibilities, when she gets a complete look at the thing; upon realizing what's going on here, though, she stops in her tracks. After a brief moment, her mind begins racing, trying to figure out how this changes things, what could be happening that they're trying to seal, how- First, though, the others need to be warned before they get caught in whatever's about to happen. She looks around hurriedly, then scowls, as some have run off. Taking out her phone, she sends a message to all the ones whose numbers she actually knows.

"No need to be so jumpy," he says, leaning on his cane. "You mind telling me a bit about that over there?" He points over at the Picasso. "I'm not too good on my art, and you folks seemed really interested in it. You know some stuff I don't about that bit of work?" He leans towards them, interestedly.

Mr. Bannon totally has no idea how to use actual intimidation tactics, by the way, so if an Intimidation roll is needed it's likely going to be at default. I am just more having a conversation with these clowns though to see what they have

Vikram

Vikram, for his part, is using his time to find somewhere high, with a good view and out of view of most people. He doesn't want to be up close and personal when this all gets started, so better to find his perch now. And that's when Samantha's text comes in.

'getting further away
r u going 2 b safe?'

Vikram likes textspeak. It's efficient. He moves to get a further perch, hopefully not in the range of whatever is going to be summoned. Trapped. Something. That sounds...quite bad.

Finding a nice sniper perch, ideally in an area outside the danger zone.
