OP, I've sailed on the med, let me tell you: - No massive apocalyptic whirlpools (in fact the sea is incredibly flat, making the deaths of anyone at all by drowning even more poignant). - Only tiny octopedes, not a kraken in sight. You literally see the Greeks smashing them on a jetty to break em up a bit when they land them, and yet nothing prowls the depths in search of Greek fishermen afaict. Minimal harpies, sirens and sheep-eating cyclops, too. Lovely weather, though. Would recommend it.
