So you were actually holding yourself back. I like to practice on seeded dungeons. But it's my biggest problem that health upgrades don't carry over to full runs, and specific floor runs end at the boss. But I doubt you're going to beat the last floor with default gear and 5 hearts

I beat VVVVVV once or twice a year.
