I remember feeling like a fuckin' pro when I figured out that by using a freephone ISP and the mega-janky Dreamcast web browser (which I think came with Chu Chu Rocket?), that I could look at porn with relative impunity from my bedroom and not have to furtively use the family PC.

The web browser came bundled with the original console, IIRC. That first night of playing PSO and realizing that I was on the internet, on my TV, playing with actual people was one of the most mindblowing experiences of my young life.

I also love the hell out of Dynamite Cop. People lament the death of the beat-em-up and Streets of Rage, but the Dynamite Deka games were a drat good follow-up.

Tech Romancer is in the OP, but did anyone else have Armada? Weird top-down space shooter where your ship leveled up, you had to go down to planets and kill all the bosses on them? It turned into a Korean MMO a few years ago (somehow)? :v:

e: My god, Chu Chu Rocket got ported to Android? I played the GBA version and almost finished all 500 or whatever player levels in that thing. Some of them you had to abuse glitches and they knew it.

I got a Dreamcast at launch and ended up trading it for an Xbox. I just remember my copy of Sonic Adventure never playing the end of stage music and the memory card beep. I even re-bought one in college and gave it away after it crashed to menu for the 100th time.

I've been thinking of Re-buying one again, but the $30 Raspberry Pi I bought this past weekend has a built in Dreamcast Emulator.

Man I had a buddy with actual broadband internet back then and I remember he called the ISP to get dial up access as well so that we could play PSO at his place. We would spend entire weekends passing the controller and just playing until we fell asleep. Those graphics and that soundtrack and that gameplay at the time was loving phenomenal.

Also I had a Gameshark and we would use it to gently caress with people and it was probably the most fun I've ever had playing video games.

I was at my mom's house yesterday and was digging through some of my old stuff and found my Dreamcast. Unfortunately it was just the Dreamcast. No cords or games or controllers or anything.

Yeah I actually have two Dreamcasts sitting around at the moment, someone left one when they moved out, but no cords & controllers so I'm not sure if they even still work :(

I had a Dreamcast something like 2 years before getting a family PC so it was literally my first consistent exposure to the internet with alllll the good and bad that encompasses. I didn't even have a keyboard but I was always in java-based chatrooms or posting dumb crap on GameFAQs, good times.

I had a little HUnewearl that I dressed all in white with the cutesy bun hair, gave her a wing-type mag and a scary scythe thing and called her the angel of death

Skies of Arcadia blew my mind and really there's still nothing like it I've played since. I was also super into EGG's aesthetic, nothing really looks like it besides like Machinarium?

I remember Sega Ozisoft issuing a product recall as they couldn't provide promised broadband capabilities as advertised. I opted for a return. VMUs didn't release until 6 months after the console release so I was stuck with Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur and couldn't save any data. Kiosks used foreign consoles and unobtainable merchandise for advertising - it was a total loving mess.

I think the only other games I bought were Crazy Taxi and MvC, and that was it. Too expensive.

Looking back, almost all good games were ported to other consoles, so I wouldn't really bother to hunt one down again.

I also put way too many hours into PSO and accidently ran up a huge long distance phone bill. Those "free" ISPs that required you to run a program that showed ads let you dial in with a dreamcast with no problem. There were a lot of good games from dreamcast and for 2d fighters it was the best. I also still really enjoy Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2.

I still have mine, but I have no idea if I have all the pieces for it. But it is home to probably my favorite Mobile Suit Gundam game which is Gundam Side Story. I didn't even watch the original show at the time. I just bought it because it looked cool. Enter me buying all the dvds of the show and binge watching them.

Also, I loved Carrier. It was easy as poo poo and kind of janky, but it was a solid Resident Evil clone.

First, read this: http://www.goodcowfilms.com/farm/games/news-archive/NZ%20Launch%20Update.htm

then read this http://www.retrogamingaus.com/wiki/index.php?title=Dreamcast

Release was delayed until late Nov/early Dec 1999. Consoles and (some) launch titles only. No VMUs. No extra controllers (but Soul Calibur was available on launch). Second shipment was 24th of Dec which I remember thinking to myself how stupid that was. House of the Dead 2 was available but the guns weren't, so you had to use a controller. 3000 at launch instead of 6000 for NZ.

Harvey Norman has a kiosk with HOTD2 using the guns because I remember my mother loving it. But no, you couldn't actually buy that setup.

The modem was downgraded to 33k because of some bullshit excuse about how Australia and New Zealand didn't have a "busy" Internet base (funny because counter-strike 1.5 was by far the biggest competitive game here at the time).

Console was $599... or $699.99 NZD I don't know, that's $300-400 USD at the time. Every game was $109-129.99 so ~65 USD? The same was true of the N64's game pricing though.

Not even a year after release they canned the online services and offered a refund. We received the mail in the post for a recall and opted for it: http://www.gameplanet.co.nz/news/i121808/Dreamcast-Online-Officially-Canned/

And that's how I pretty much got into PC gaming (D2 LOD, CS1.5, SC) having grown up as primarily a Sega fan, only having touched the N64 and PS1 outside of Sega beforehand. Basically, Ozisoft completely hosed up the release in Oceania with lack of stock, mismanagement, poor planning, promises and delays. I couldn't afford nor even bother to touch the online aspects of the Dreamcast and honestly I wouldn't have bothered regardless, it was games like Crazy Taxi that I wanted to play, and I remember seeing the game running at a local Noel Leeming and thinking to myself about how fun it looked.

But yeah, I'm also getting that PSO nostalgia. I might have to bust out the old XBox and play some.

You can play with a 360 pad with BB but you won't see the icons. It's pretty intuitive though as the button layout resembles the Dreamcast's.

The character ID influencing what drops you got was a cool concept that was never repeated in any other game.

Console is so good, I had one (still do) and had many games for it. How the hell did it even die? I remember hearing some vague announcement they'd stop making games for it and I was like, "What the gently caress SEGA?" :argh:

I liked Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 as a kid but you really shouldn't try playing those games as late twenty-something. Christ that dialog is so cringeworthy. Game REALLY kind of just sucks in general too and to this day I wonder how I mustered the patience even before jobs and such to finish those games.

CowboyAndy
Aug 7, 2012
I think the big reason it died was because it lacked the ability to play DVDs. If I remember right, the Dreamcast and Playstation 2 came out at the same time in Japan, and regular DVD players were pretty pricey at the time. So, a lot of Japanese folks bought PS2s for the simple fact that they were the cheapest DVD players around.

Also, Sega had released a few crap consoles before the DC: Sega 32x, Sega CD, Saturn. All those bad consoles left bad tastes in consumer's mouths.

The PS2 crushed it like a small car going under tank treads with DVD-sized storage for games, and being able to play DVD movies at a time when DVD players were still semi-expensive iirc.

Edit: goddamn CowboyAndy gone and rustled this post like it's cattle :argh:.

I'd pretty ,much moved over to the PC during the PSX/N64 era, but the Dreamcast brought me back over with perfect ports of Capcom fighters and some interesting netplay games. Everyone remembers Phantasy Star Online, but there were a few other arcade-style games that got online play- Alien Front Online and Outtrigger were two games I played many a match on the network. There was an online port of Daytona USA too, but I don't think the game ever ran too well online- I remember a lot of desync and crashing when attempting to play via 56k.

There was also Ooga Booga, which was a trap I fell for after liking the previous games. It was... an interesting idea, at least.

Came over because arcade perfect Marvel vs Capcom/2 and imported my first games with the Vampire Chronicle and Capcom vs SNK 2 Japanese releases, but got a fair amount of other stuff while there too. Still remember a few oddball titles I scooped up like Fur Fighters and Guts' Fury.

The Dreamcast failing was 90% SEGA being in financial dire straits long before the console ever released and 10% all the other reasons people claim for its demise.

I played the poo poo out of quake 3 on dreamcast and alien front online. I remember Alien Front online being unbalanced as hell since the aliens had the fastest vehicles in the game and the alien walker being great at strafing. All the humans had were tanks.

I also remember it having no cheat protection as I once took a game shark online and spammed nukes the whole match.

Also dreamcast was home to the best version of soul reaver, even surpassing the PC version.

Yeah, the small and large tanks for the aliens were better then their human counterparts (the small tank especially so.) The medium, two-legged walker tho was really bad, if I recall. Not that didn't mean the aliens still didn't have an overall advantage. I think the only merit to the Human side was that the Small and Medium tanks were little better at circle strafing the aliens then visa-versa, but considering the real powerhouses of the Alien side were the difficult-to-catch hovertanks and not the ones you could actually circle around...

When I learned you could burn DC isos, I went hog wild with all the shmups I couldn't find in local stores — Triggerheart Excelica, Trizeal, Mars Matrix, Under Defeat, Giga Wang, GunBird 2, Border Down, etc. There were some absolute winners on the DC. I haven't had a tv in forever, but my DC is still in the closet.
