Dear fair goons,

I have a computer in my garage, which I rarely use - it was once a great and mighty machine, but with age I decommissioned many years ago and relegated to playing pandora and web browsing and such. I am going to formally wipe it down and garage sale it, but I came across a small mystery.

Its 500GB hard drive is almost full, which took me by surprise. I windirstat'd the beast, and found a 405GB "archive.afs" file in my drive root. hurrayyy.

I've used the machine for data recovery before, so I am wondering if there was some long forgotten backup I made or something, but 30 minutes of googling later and trying every archive program I know of, no dice.

I broke out a hex editor to see if I could see any clues, but nogo there either - or at least it's punching above my ability to decypher what the heck it is - just looks like a giant compressed file to me. Pretty sure it's just a giant virus cache or something. Anyone got any suggestions for figuring out what the heck before I nuke the drive?

edit : last modified / accessed date is mid 2015, which makes me wonder about its possible legitimacy. I'd think something nasty would be reading/writing to it pretty frequently...

All I know is that afs is a compression file format that was used to compress poo poo on PS2 disk. There's a utility called AFS file explorer (google that poo poo, if you get hits about PS2 games, that's your baby), throw that in a VM and see if it does the trick. Curious to see what's in here. And if it's my porn collection, I want it back, dammit.

Its from a software called 'Axxon Next' from AxxonSoft. (Open Platform Video Management Software)

The .afs is a video storage file system inside a file container.

Thank you for solving my mystery! Playstation archive was a nogo, but Axxon is the key! Long story, but that nailed it.
