President Samuel "Sam" Houston I thank the legislature for their foresight in creating the Land Agency. I am appointing the Treasurer, Henry Smith, as interim Commissioner, until the post is filled via election. Enjoy fucked around with this message at 20:28 on Sep 6, 2016 |

Henry Smith! Thank you, Mr. President, I will do what I can to honor the office until a candidate can be duly elected. I am edified to see the advances already made in our infrastructure, and vow to continue upon that success. I was also quite pleased to hear of the establishment of our very own national currency - I vow I shall do what I can to nurture the newborn dollar into a proud man unafraid to take his place among the community of world currencies. The failure of the LITER Act is regrettable, even though I can certainly understand the reluctance of the Legislature to decrease our already low revenues, even in the expectation of greater revenues to come. I may retool the act and reintroduce it in a more opportune time. Furthermore, I can only condemn in disgust the recent attacks against the Vice President. They remain nothing more than the latest unfortunate incident in a clear campaign designed to attack the very legitimacy and faith in this Government, and shall not go unanswered. Even Furthermore! It is clear that decisive action is required to begin repairing the rift that is developing across Texan society. The answer to our divisions is clear - unity! On this note I point to the recent efforts of our own General Hockley to inspire a newfound sense of National Pride in his own men, an effort I would replicate on a larger scale. As such, I am pleased to announce the formation in conjunction with the Texas Business Roundtable of the Friends of Texas. This group will be dedicated to the ideals of our Founding and our Nation, and work tirelessly to instill the same in our citizenry. A unified and patriotic citizenry is fertile ground for economic development, and I envision patriotic citizens and businesses working together to build a safe, prosperous, strong Texas for all. These patriots would be due the thanks of a grateful nation and Government. The nomnial membership fee will (after necessary expenses,) be donated directly to the Government to better fund our fighting men. sniper4625 fucked around with this message at 21:59 on Sep 6, 2016 |

Vice-President, Mirabeau B. Lamar "Henry Smith sends his regards?!" What kind of god-damned FOOL thinks they can trick me with such blatant tomfoolery?! The good Mr. Smith! and I have had some matters of disagreements, but I think it's clear to anybody in this room that the idea that he would break into my home is ridiculous. So I am not even going to waste any more time speaking about him. What we SHOULD be concerned about, however, is the fact that such a thing happened in the first place! Is Texas such a lawless land that foul criminals and would-be provocateurs think they can just burglarize the home of the Vice President? And murder one of my own slaves? Rest assured, I will be taking the necessary steps to protect my home, my family, and myself. Do not think that you will be able to invade my home ever again.

Henry Smith! Mr. President, a suggestion: Now that we have a currency, we must take active steps to protect it. Our currency will be worthless is it can be forged at will, or robbed with impunity by any of the gangs that are now seeing a rise in popularity. While the Rangers are unequalled at their job, it would be unwise to burden them with every responsibility of law enforcement. As such, I propose the following. The Texan Secret Service Act posted:
We have our Dollar. Let us protect it.

Samuel Seward Seward writes an open letter to President Houston Dear. Mr President, The Glanton Gang is caused by the unique combination of lack of opportunity and lawlessness in the Republic. While you and I agree on many things, your lack of support for the tariff bill is questionable. While your wavering support of private enterprise is one thing, your endorsement of public safety is well known. No one could legitimately question your commitment to the maintenance of public safety. That said, even with the Republic spending most of its budget on public safety, very few of us feel safe. In a very real way, protecting ourselves from bandits and other threats has become a personal problem. I have seen reports which suggest that folks that range from frontiersmen to myself feel the need to take up the mantle of defense. Your own Vice President had his house robbed. This makes me wonder... If the Government feels the need to keep its coffers sufficiently high to hinder private enterprise in order pay for the common defense, and the common defense is broken, then why aren't we reevaluating government priorities? Mr. President, what do you think the role of Government is? At what point does the government get too big? More pointedly, what should citizens do when the government spends significant amounts of money on something that is evidently ineffectual? General George W. Hockley Gentlemen, as we have seen over the past months our fine nation is being choked for lack of resources. Our hard working farmers till the ground to produce the crops that feed us, our businessmen use every gift they have to further our economy. However such development takes time. Time I fear that we do not have. Gentlemen, we need land and resources that we can exploit immediately. The Mexicans still refuse to acknowledge our independence and I reckon they never will through negotiation alone. I say we make them recognize our independence through force. The people of Texas stand ready to fight the Mexicans until we meet them on the doorsteps of their silver mines!

Prince Karl of Solms-Braunfels Gentlemen, it pleases me that you have seen the value of German immigration to the young republic of Texas, and your generous land grant along the Guadalupe River has been met with an equally generous payment of much-needed gold and quality weaponry. I and my organization feel that this is an important cornerstone of the future integration of more immigrants from our home countries into Texan society, and we look forward to building together. I am pleased to report that I have organized a very small team of specialists from Germany to begin prospecting our land grant. In the meantime, we have several dozen craftsmen and farmers who have already begun construction of a makeshift settlement along the Guadalupe River. Official survey results are still pending, but at first glance the land around 40 miles northeast of San Antonio seems fertile and more than sufficient to sustain a growing settlement. The initial investment from the Adelsverein along with donations from various other sources throughout the German kingdoms, would indicate solvency up to an eventual starting population of 1,000 immigrants. Our settlement is as yet unnamed -- however, we will eventually be petitioning the new Land Agency for incorporated status of our settlement, once we reach the appropriate population. Edit: grr at people who don't have PM's. Drone fucked around with this message at 10:05 on Sep 7, 2016 |

José María Jesús Carbajal I would like to congratulate President Houston on the creation of the Land Agency, and officially announce my candidacy for the position of its Commissioner. I would also like to congratulate the new German immigrants to our land. I have no doubt they will be a boon to our whole society.

President Samuel "Sam" Houston Paper With Lines posted:Samuel Seward Dear Mr Seward, I believe the tax burden upon Texan citizens is a necessary evil to protect us from lawlessness. I do not believe private enterprise to be hindered by paying our armed forces and police. On the contrary, without the state's monopoly on violence, free exchange in an open market would be impossible, and society would revert to a war of all against all. The solution to a breakdown of order is not to throw one's hands in the air and give up on upholding the law, but on the contrary, to devote more of society's resources to combating it. Therefore I do not find merit in your suggestion that we should re-evaluate our priorities. If you have specific suggestions on improving the effectiveness of government, however, I encourage you to lobby your local legislator to propose a bill. Many thanks for your correspondence, Sam Houston President
