I don't know how long I have left to live, hopefully a long time. Not being young anymore I'm looking for a project car, something dreamed about as a kid. I like Gen 1 and 2 Nova's, but unlike back then when they were common in classified ads in print, now they are never listed. If they are, they have been heavily modified for the low low price of $30K. How do you find an unmolested 60's era beater with a decent body that you can stab an engine into and have fun with? Just not seeing them anymore. I would do the same with a '70s car but they were emissions controlled, and missing original smog equipment means instant failure when getting it tested for registration. I have no interest in running 70's smog devices, which didn't work anyway.

Do you have a time machine? This task would be a lot easier if you had a time machine. Plan A: time machine. Go back in time, buy car before prices got stupid Plan B: find an auction in your area. Plan C: drive around, find some guy with a field full of cars. Approach with your hands up. What state are you in, i can dig around some auction stuff.

The boomers have really hosed up 60s car prices imo. I've found that you can actually get into a decent street rod(pre-62) for about $5-6k depending on what it is(no '32 fords et Al). It'll prob have the original 4 or 6 cyl, but so what. What my father does is use a Craigslist aggregator, and search around the country. The most important thing is finding one without rust. He has used https://www.uship.com many times and found reliable shipping, so factor in 1&2k for that. Good luck.

Are you dead set on chevy, or is GM family fine? anything against any other brands? How about number of doors, what is your door limit? You could prob offer $4k on this crew cab cutty and drive away with it. You'll probably never see another one. All 2 door A-body fun bits will probably bolt right on. http://www.copart.com/us/Lot/29299976?searchId=1089591811

Just keep an eye on Craigslist. There's always something interesting on there. It might take a bit of time to find something with two doors, no bed, and a V8 for under $5k, but they do exist. Here's one, for example: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5755062540.html Or this neato Galaxie (that is unfortunately not a fastback): http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/5745527909.html Obviously a Ferd isn't gonna scratch your Chebby itch, but it's just an example of the condition you'll find in that price range. You're not going to find anything super clean or original for that price, but you can certainly find a decent project starting point. If you can settle for a pickup, your options widen significantly. E: Also, yeah, 4-doors. I paid $2k for my '65 Impala, because it's a 4-door and thus not desirable. But that probably wouldn't satisfy a musclecar jones. Can't you ghetto two door a four door? Think dukes of hazard but only on the back doors. 57 chevys are done like this all the time because of the $30k price difference. Personally just buy a 2005 mustang GT for $5,000. It is so much better. I see new camaros going for 11k with v6s that is another option. On a bonus both cars won't kill you in a 30mph accident. Edit, sometime you can get a 73 74 challenger for your price cause garbage. Have you considered a 1980 diplomat with a v8?

Most people start with craigslist. Put the minimum year as 1960, the maximum year as 1969. Next select make as Chevrolet. Finally put the maximum price at $5000. If you thought you'd get a pristine nova for $5k you're high as a kite, but there are plenty of sub $5000 chevy's for sale. Whether they run and drive is a whole other issue.

I would suggest you search in one of the dustbowl states. Less rust, but no California prices. Unless you are in California then just go buy one. I don't think you are going to find anything good unless you add 10k to the price though or plan on wrenching. And sanding, and interior, and rewiring.

That's pretty much how my dad and I got this : '65 Chevy II Nova. Except we didn't do any of the sanding, interior or rewiring, just rammed a built 327 making around 400bhp in with a four speed behind it. This car has a long history, originally being a 3 speed I6 car bought by Contra Costa County, California. By the time we acquired it for $600 in 2007, it was abandoned in a junkyard in Vegas with a siezed motor, a trashed interior and bullet holes in the windows, wearing Oregon plates. We dragged it back to Connecticut, gutted the interior, replaced the brake system and made it into a beast. Car is completely rust free. I built it as a side project while working for my dad and after years of begging he finally let me have it this month, having had his fun.

Yeah, I know I've seen some reasonable four-doors around here that could get snapped up for cheap with American dollarinos.

62 Impala, no motor or transmission but clean title, $4k, in Lubbock TX. Looks like someone's project car that has to go.

Not with everything - I'd have to ask my dad for the facts when it comes to full size body on frame cars, but with the Chevy II the only difference between the 2 and 4 door is the rear sheetmetal. The dimensions are %100 identical otherwise. Just cut the center pillar out, acquire coupe doors and coupe sheetmetal, weld it in. Obviously the VIN will tell the truth, but part of what made my car so cheap and kept it from getting snapped up was the overabundance of doors. 2 doors are worth 2-3x as much and most of them have been hotrodded to hell and back by now. I'm seeing mostly 4-door Impalas, some Novas (2- and 4-door), a surprising number of Corvairs, and an unsurprising number of pickups on my local craigslist. Some El Caminos too. What kind of condition are you hoping to find? I'm sure you won't find anything restored for your price range, but if your only criteria are "interior present" and "exterior not completely smashed," there seem to be all kinds of options. You said you were planning on putting your own drivetrain in it, right? If we're sharing options near us that might be attractive, I found these: '69 4-door Chevelle, drivetrain and interior present but rough, $2000 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/cto/5753604243.html '66 2-door Impala, no drivetrain or interior, stupid wheels, $2500 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/5758262808.html '69 2-door Impala, looks clean, says he wants "$5", might mean $5k? http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5744062799.html '69 2-door Impala, looks clean, stupid wheels, $4100 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5755492509.html '69 2-door Impala, "has rust issues" but no pictures of what that means, runs and drives $3800 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5723495259.html '62 4-door Bel Air, original everything, 6-cyl, $5000 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/cto/5759651147.html '65 4-door Bel Air, pretty janky but runs and drives, 6-cyl, $2500 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5760286579.html '64 4-door Biscayne, looks straight, engine and trans out but included, 6-cyl, $2700 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5726873275.html '64 4-door Nova, looks like a partially complete project, $4000 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5741036882.html '62 4-door Nova, rattlecan black, 6-cyl, interior present, salvage title, $1800 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/5760291604.html '70 4-door Nova, rattlecan black, 350/350, looks pretty solid, $4000 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5743930673.html '70 2-door Nova, body in primer, 350/350, $4500 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5755062540.html '70 2-door Nova, no drivetrain, seats look decent, $5000 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5740692394.html '70 4-door Nova, looks pretty original, $3500 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/5753680015.html If you can't find anything in CO in your price range, it's probably still cheaper to buy something out here and drag it back. Yeah the Impala at least is the same length overall, although I'm not sure if the roof is the same for both the 4- and 2-door ones. But the 2-door doors are definitely longer, so you might be able to convert one.

Finding people that really know how to work on them is much less common. I lost my local Corvair expert to ALS this past June.
