OK so I thought this might be a useful idea for a monthly thread - with 8 billion shows and 3 million networks/streaming sites in existence now, it's generally hard to keep up with what's on and when it starts etc, so I thought I'd crib from the excellent http://pogdesign.co.uk/cat which many of us already use to track what we've seen and list all the shows they have that air for the first time each month. Obviously September and October are going to be the busiest, but with cable/streaming staggers throughout the year it might be useful for then. So here's a straight list in order of start date as to what's new. Feel free to then post your feedback on what you've seen so far to other users so people can gauge what they might like or not. Sadly, the view I copy and paste this stuff from doesn't tell you whether something is comedy/drama/reality unlike some of the other pages on the site, but it should be fairly obvious for most I'd say. I haven't removed the 'selected by Users' bit as I guess it can show the popularity of the show amongst the users on the site. Also, not every single show gets added to the site in time but the majority are here I believe. Some will get threads, many won't. On with the list! I'll start as I've seen a few things, don't feel you have to follow my format or anything though. Loosely Exactly Nicole cheating a bit because I've not actually watched the whole episode, but I doubt it'll have many other people who've tried it. I like Nicole Byer as she was excellent on John Garbus' podcast and knew I needed to check out her show. What I've seen so far is pretty funny and will be keeping it on my stream list until I have chance to catch up to the rest of the episodes. Encouraging, at least. C+ Atlanta I don't think I love this as much as some other posters, but the first 2 episodes definitely have me on board to finish the season at the very least. It looks great, it seems to be telling an interesting story, and it's good to see Donald Glover back on the screen. B+ Better Things produced by Louis CK, under his company, with one of the main co-stars of Louie. So yeah, it's essentially a version of Louie from a female perspective from what I can tell so far, which isn't really a bad thing as I like Pamela Adlon. The most amusing thing was FX warning us on every single ad break that there were scenes of nudity, yet all I could assume this was talking about was a 1/2 second glimpse of a laptop with a fake porn site with no naked people on it. Never change, broadcasters. B The Good Place there doesn't seem to be many new sitcoms on the non-cable broadcasters this month, so I'm glad this is a Michael Schur one with Kristen Bell at the heart of it. She plays a dickhead really well, and I'm sure this will develop into something that's really fun. Good premise, with a solid start. B+ This Is Us mediocre as hell for the first 57 minutes with a really interesting plot twist towards the end. I'll give it a second shot just because it felt like the writing was hampered by the twist (and not spoiling it), but it really needs to get a whole lot more interesting and not rely solely on it's gimmick. C- Speechless spends so long lecturing the viewer it forgets to be funny in the slightest. D

Lethal Weapon's pilot not sucking surprised the hell out of me. The casting is great and is easily the best part though.

Here are my "power rankings". 1. Pitch - One of the best pilots I’ve ever seen, this seems geared and put together solely to appeal to me, and I’m okay with it. I hope it maintains the same intensity from the first episode. 2. Atlanta - I keep circling back to the Don Glover quote “Twin Peaks with rappers”. The show and world have gotten richer every week. Already renewed for Season 2 as well. 3. The Good Place - My best comparison is Last Man on Earth. This is funny and interesting and has very good plot hooks and cliffhangers each week. 4. The Exorcist - Another strong FOX pilot. I’m probably overrating since I love horror, but who cares. Geena Davis is great as well. 5. Better Things - The reductive comparison is “Louie with Pamela Adlon”, and he does contribute creatively to the show. It’s more than that and different than that, and I love it a lot so far. Already renewed for Season 2. 6. Lethal Weapon - They already aped two good sequences from the first two movies. I’m on board for the ride to find out if they have the budget for 20 more per year! 7. Designated Survivor - Bit of a rocky pilot despite the high-concept doing a great job selling itself. Keifer is great. Everyone else in the cast will hopefully get a chance to catch up. —— Right here is the cutoff for shows that I’m fairly confident I’m going to watch 100% through. The rest are on shaky ground and entertaining trash that I could drop with some bad episodes. 8. Speechless - It’s a good, smart, funny pilot. I like the chemistry between JJ and his ‘voice’. But I really dislike Minnie Driver / her character immensely. I want to like the show, but I hope she gets changed a little out of 'pilot mode’. 9. Son of Zorn - I love the stupid idea, but the first episode of this just brought semi-warm smiles and the promise for more laughs later. This did have one of the better pilot twists I’ve seen for a sitcom, though. 10. Kevin Can Wait - I like watching Kevin James fall down, and this isn’t insultingly unfunny yet. Also I laugh at everything “Chale” does. 11. Notorious - I had higher hopes for a Shondaland type production, but this was just a bit of a scattered mess. There were good moments and promising future dramas, though. And if I put up with The Newsroom to see this sorta thing…. 12. Bull - Does Michael Weatherly deserve better? Maybe this role in a bad show is his smarmy, know-it-all peak? I’m hoping it doesn’t get boring at least. 13. MacGyver - All the last-second tooling really shows as this episode was incredibly disjointed and almost nonsensical. I’ll see what it coalesces into. So far, I mildly enjoyed the voiceover as well as the updated, on-screen chryon type of explanations and labels for what was going on, science-wise.

Seen about half the new shows I want to see, and will keep slotting the rest in as I watch the premieres. I really like the idea of ranking these, so I'ma do that. 01. Atlanta - Probably one of the most unique shows of the year tonally. Strong mixture of humour and character work and Glover is excellent at having his work actually seem like it takes place in the present instead of like 1-2 years in the past, which isn't exactly a criticism of other shows, but it works really well here. Only issue with this is that the last 2 episodes haven't been on the same level as the impeccable second episode. 02. The Good Place - Definitely Schur's funniest show off the bat, while also having a strong mystery-esque undercurrent and some meaningful themes I can't wait to explore further. Doesn't seem like it'll have the strong ensemble of Parks or B99, but the cast are still killing it so far. 03. Easy - Perhaps the least necessary of all the "STORIES ABOUT LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS IN THE BIG CITY" shows, but also maybe the best. It's an anthology with each episode following new characters who sometimes are vaguely related, and more than anything it's maybe the single most real-feeling show I've ever seen. There isn't a single false note, or anything that feels dramatised. It's just....real life. Episodes 5 and 6 are two of the best episodes of TV of the year. 04. One Mississippi - While Atlanta might be the funniest of all the modern dramedies, this may be the one most devoid of laughs. It's a very strange, dark show that dramatises real events in her life and managed to mine every source of awkward and uncomfortable out of them. The drama really hits, especially in the smaller moments, and Tig's stepdad is an incredibly bizarre character. 05. Better Things - I wouldn't really agree with PRB that this is "a lot different" from Louie - it's about as close as two shows have ever been to being the same thing, in a lot of ways. Except she talks about periods etc instead of jackin it. So far it's very similar to Louie season 1 - pleasant, and frequently laugh-out-loud funny, but not quite reaching great level yet. Maybe we'll get a "God" later in the season to change that. 06. Pitch - In a later post. 07. Queen Sugar - Very well-made and acted, but hasn't quite got its hooks in me yet, ya feel? I like the characters but it hasn't done much to propel itself above the other billion family dramas, other than the race of the leads. 08. Speechless - Currently Minnie Driver and Cedric Yarborough are the only things I'm really feeling in this, and even then Driver is a very typical "human tornado doting mother". The pilot won it a couple more episodes. 09. This Is Us - Really well-written, with a unique voice. Strong characters. But in the end this basically felt like a short film with no real point. There is very little in this pilot to make you want to see what happens next. Especially with the 'twist' which honestly feels more like a wrap-up than a hook for an ongoing television series. still to see: High Maintenance Luke Cage Take My Wife Crisis in Six Scenes Westworld Insecure Goliath Escobarbarian fucked around with this message at 00:05 on Sep 25, 2016 |

Pitch - Very very good pilot, but I don't think I'll be watching the show. Part of the reason it's so good is Fogelman's deft touch with dialogue and I doubt he'll be a major player in the writer's room. But mainly it's just not my sort of show - I absolutely recommend everyone check this one out. It did make me feel a little awkward with how overtly abusive the father character is, though, and how the show subconsciously approves seeing how she 1. made it to the majors because of it 2. only berates him for it when she's at her lowest ebb with it forgotten once she's better. It's also clear it's not something they'll explore fully, for reasons I can't really get into. But I still recommend it.

They had an "I'm not too old for this poo poo" and I'm going to count that. The first "real episode" had some flaws in the plot department, the bad guy was poorly acted and incredibly obvious. The character driven stuff is fantastic though. Keesha Sharp is killing it as Trish Murtaugh, I think she's going to be the glue that holds the show together. I'm still a little in shock that they started the series with Riggs' wife having the accident. For comparison, my roommate and I watched (most of) Lethal Weapon 4.
