sticklefifer posted:The 3rd act of Devil's Pass is goofy as hell but it's pretty good up until then. Bad CGI Gollums and a magic caveman Stargate kinda ruined it for me, plus like a 10 minute conversation in front of it that kills the pacing of the end. It has its moments though. I mean proportionately the final scene can't be much more of the running time

gently caress yeah Liars awesome. All of their videos are great. I saw them on the tour for that album and it was so good, but I have never seen an audience hate a band so much. They were even the headliners. I guess everyone wanted dance rock.

Never seen Liars (to my great shame, it's destroying me) but the most I've ever seen an audience hate a band was when Deerhunter opening for NIN and Brandon Cox was wearing a cheerleader's outfit. "Who the gently caress are these guys?" time a million. I wanted to harm people.

Lol, I've heard that about so many bands with NIN. Trent Reznor picks a lot of good openers that are despised by NIN fans. The thing with Liars was funny, because they had their first album, which was super weird and right in line with the rest of their stuff, but it had a few really catchy hooks and they somehow got lumped in with all the dance rock stuff that was coming out (around 2001) and they were kind of blowing up, then their follow up was just straight menacing droney noise. That album got totally loving panned (I think people realize it's good now) and was hated by fans and critics, but me and a couple of my buddies were pretty obsessed with it. The show was maybe a week after it came out and I don't think anyone knew what they were in for. They played nothing off the first album and most people left during the set. There were probably 20 people left (in a pretty big venue) by the end but they rocked out the whole time. The song you posted was one of the best songs I've ever seen live. The clicking noise in the background was super loud and foreboding and totally gave me goosebumps. They've been one of my favorite bands ever since. They are super underrated imo. Sorry that was a bit rambley I just love Liars.

Yeah, They Were Wrong So We Drowned is still my favorite album of theirs, and yeah at the time everyone was like "this is awful, it's just uncomfortable noise!" I also dig that it's a concept album about the Salem witch trials.
