A long, long time ago,
in a galaxy far, far away...

In the Outer Rim territories, there rests a planet that has changed hands quite a lot in recent years. Originally called Sartinaynian, the planet was home to the Imperial Remnant. Then, the Fel Empire. Then, the Sith Empire. And, now, the Fel-Remnant Alliance. It was an easy take-over for the Emperor-in-Exile, Roan Fel. He simply had his contacts on the inside cycle in more and more loyalist stormtroopers until he could simply land and claim the world. It is a rough planet, and it's skyline matches it nature as a military hub: gray, uncaring, and unyielding.

A multitude of species run across the planet in stormtrooper armor. Human high culture, a policy of human superiority under Emperor Palpatine, was one of the first things thrown out when Jaged Fel took power over the Remnants. The empire under Palpatine served the dark side and that law was a reflection of its sickness. The Stormtroopers are performing maintenance on the base, running drills, or preparing for missions. This base is secure, the Sith Empire would lose all its military might trying to claim this planet, but that just meant they had a hiding spot. There was still a war to win. These men and women needed to go out and fight the good fight and restore balance to the force.

They weren't alone, of course.

While few in number, members of the Galactic Alliance Remnants were stationed on Bastion since Roan and Starzi, leader of the remnant fleet, made a treaty against the Sith Empire. Most remain on the capital ships that make up the remnant fleet, but some were sent here for any number of reasons. The alliance wasn't always easy: the Fel Loyalists sought victory at any cost while the Remnants kept to a code of honor. The ties were not always easy to maintain, but they have not yet been severed.

Of course, little mattered on this world. It was only the staging area for future assaults. No, the galaxy, and Emperor's, eyes rest on a blue world far, far away: Mon Calamari.

The Mon Calamarian were a species known for supporting the underdogs in the many wars that stretched the galaxy. They supported the Rebel Alliance against the first Empire and now they supported the Fel-Remnant Alliance. However, the Sith Empire was as unforgiving to them as Palpatine and Darth Vader were to Alderon. Darth Kyat, leader of the Sith and usurper of the Emperor's throne, had ordered their genocide after they aided the Alliance against the Sith Empire. Now, systematic slaughter is being perpetrated against them every day and may result in the end of their entire species.

As cold as it may sound, the Emperor was concerned more with the war. He knew the defeat of the Sith was the real priority, at least to him. But, many did not agree. Most importantly, the head of the Imperial Knights, force sensitive protectors of the Emperor, who he needed to train new recruits on Bastion could not stand idly by. He knew the man well and knew he was one who would not abandon a people to die, unless someone replaced him. Compromise is to be expected from those in power as life is never simple or easy.

And compromise is why you stand in his presence today.

Standing in his royal regalia, he gives a confident look as he begins "You have been called today to undertake a very important task for the Fel-Remnant alliance. The Mon Calamari, our allies, are being systematically slaughtered. Our current operative on the planet, Treis Sinde, needs to be withdrawn so he may aid in training our recruits. As such, you are being sent in to replace him and aid the local Mon Calamari resistance forces. Your first obstacle will be sneaking past the Sith blockade of the planet. As their neighbor species, the Quarren, are still on good terms with the Empire, trade is still allowed to reach the planet, but only after strict examination. This might be your main point of entry. We've procured a YT-2400 filled with Quarren trade goods for this purpose. Once on the planet, you will be expected to find Treis Sinde and convince him that he is relived of duties and you are his replacement. Afterwards, you are at the command of the Mon Calamari until further notice."

He goes silent. Without saying it, he is allowing you to ask questions.

Kam Randin

Kam shifts in his seat as his Emperor speaks. Despite his years of loyal service to Emperor Fel as part of the Imperial Mission, only very recently has he been placed into a situation of being spoken to by the Emperor in person. The man's bearing lives up to his HoloNet likeness: tall, steely, and imperious. From Kam's perspective, the man seems to fill the room with his presence -- though, it isn't hard to spot the roughness around the edges that the Emperor has gained after years of exile.

"Your Majesty, you say the Quarren on still on good terms with the Sith Empire -- can we expect that their real sympathies lie with you, the true Emperor?" Kam leans his elbow into the armrest of his briefing room chair, rubbing his chin in thought. "Can we expect them to lend us and the Mon Cals any aide, or is the best we can hope for that they stand on the sidelines? Do we have any idea if they might even actively oppose us?"

Hal stands at attention as he observes the Emperor and observes the man's noble bearing, imperious eyes, and the sense of command that comes off of him. How regal he is, and what a joy it is to serve him, much less to be allowed in his presence. He listens closely to the Emperor's words, but does so with a certain sense of unease. "Your Majesty, he asks, you had mentioned that our first task, after finding Treis Sinde, is to convince him that we are his replacements. Do we have any sorts of codes to convince him of our true loyalty, so that he doesn't suspect us of treason and try to kill us on sight?

Shem'in'ara "Mina"

Mina hangs back, letting the others speak directly with the Emperor. She had spent enough time with the Imperial Knights in the last several years to know just how much these people worshiped the man, but her respect was still tempered with a shell of reality - had he been such a good leader, he wouldn't have trusted Darth Krayt and his murderous Sith betrayers in the first place. She didn't betray that thought, however, and knew how to keep her mind distracted as she studied the technical readouts of Mon Calamari Prime and the Sith Imperial Forces arrayed in blockade/defense of the planet. Frowning as she looks at the ship specs, she looks up and decides to break her silence.

"You recovered Sith Imperial ships and uniforms when you retook Bastion... perhaps the safest solution would be to travel there in disguise, with a fabricated transponder on a supposed supply mission to the Quarren. They may be far more receptive and just let us through their defenses."

Thus equipped by fortune, physique, and character, he was naturally indomitable, and subordinate to no one in the world.

Zara Vandorian, Imperial Knight

Zara had been surprised and honoured to realize that the Emperor himself was briefing them; clearly it was a testament to the importance of this mission and the amount of trust being placed in their hands. Even given her familial connection to the man, it was not every day that she had the opportunity to speak to him directly. The others were no doubt even more impressed.

Zara was already acquainted with two of her new comrades-in-arms: Hal Brin and the Chiss, Mina. Brin was an Imperial Knight like herself, although more experienced. She didn't know him well, but the Imperial Knights were a small enough group that it would have been difficult for anyone to remain a stranger for long. From what little Zara knew of him, the man was as staunchly loyal as they came – a model Knight. The Chiss, on the other hand, was something else entirely. She was certainly not an Imperial Knight, though Zara knew that she had gone through some training – that was how they'd met, after all. Neither was she a Jedi, though, and obviously she couldn't be a Sith. While some might have questioned her loyalties, Zara deliberately remained open-minded. This war was not one that the Empire was fighting alone, and any enemy of the Sith was a potential ally. Clearly the Emperor agreed, to have chosen the Chiss for this mission.

The other two Zara did not know, but she knew that the other alien – the Verpine, she remembered – had come from the so-called Republic fleet. Zara had rarely heard the Republic spoken of fondly in her youth, but her opinion of it had been improving recently – largely due to the alliance, of course. As with the Chiss, she was willing to keep an open mind. And then there was the last individual, another human. All Zara knew about him was that he was a member of the Imperial Mission, which was certainly to his credit.

All in all, she was hopeful. And excited, truth be told, although she knew that openly expressing such an emotion would be rather unbecoming of an Imperial Knight. How could she not be, though? It was the first important mission she had been chosen for, after all. What was happening on Mon Calamari was truly horrifying, and the idea of contributing to the planet's salvation was an immensely appealing one.

Returning her mind to the situation at hand, she realized that she, too, had a question. "My lord, does this mission have a designated commander?" It would have to be one of the Imperial Knights, she assumed, and Brin would likely be the natural choice, given his experience. Unless the other human, the one from the Imperial Mission, was more experienced and trusted than she thought.

The Verpine stands at the back, his huge cloak cloak hiding his race, except for his head, of course. As the Emperor pauses for questions, Z starts rubs two forearms together as the speech modulates, and a small box mounted around the neck of his insect translates this into speech.

Verpine Translator posted:

Lord Majesty, you say we have to support the Mon Calamari in their fight against slaughter at the hands of the Sith. Please tell this foolish bug, are we after the Mon Calamari ships, or the Mon Calamari as a people? Would it be acceptable once we have displaced your minion that we strive to take the shipyards? Or do you need to have the full support of the planet below as well to continue this fight?

The verpine stops and considers his question a bit more.

Verpine Translator posted:

Further more, if we are assisting in the overrunning of the Sith from the planetary space, do we have any support from the fleet to assist with those Sith ships in orbit? Or will we be relying on the ships currently in the Mon Calamari Shipyards to fight against those?

Roan Fel stands patiently at attention as each question comes his way. After everyone has asked a question, he gives a moment for them to sit before beginning.

"The Quarren people are afraid and rightfully so. The Sith wish genocide on their neighbors and some were slaughtered already trying to defend them in the initial demonstration. As it stands, there is no doubt hatred bubbling alongside that fear, but the vast majority of Quarren stand still and without the courage to defend their neighbors. This could be something you can change."

Turning to Hal, he gives a stern look. "Hal, you, Zara, and Mina have served under him as your students. I feel your presence alone should be enough. It is the main reason I have had you sent on this assignment. But, if that is not, simply tell him that 'well, father always said you were the most stubborn of his knights.' He'll know that to be a line only I would ever say to him."

Turning to Mina, "Mina, we have considered the idea and it carries high risk. All of our vessels have been logged as last deployed to Bastion. Considering the time that has passed, if Darth Krayt is not a fool, he would have had every ship deployed here marked as compromised and any background check would bring them up. A fabricated transponder runs the risk of detection, the transponder on this YT-2400 was purchased off a merchant vessel that had clearance to land on Mon Calamari. Not only that, but the imperial vessels on Bastion are needed for missions that are more directly combative in nature. We can't afford to use them on this mission."

A softer smile took over the Emperor's face when he turned to Zara, "I know you are new to the knights, Zara of Vandorian. Generally, as my personal guard, they supersede many when assigned directly on a mission at my behest. As three are assigned, the senior knight takes charge. That would be Hal, a loyal and fine example of our order. Someone I can trust with my life, as I do with all my knights."

That smile faded when he moved to the Zrischke. His demeanor changed to disappointment. "I'm not sure where this miscommunication could have come from, but the shipyard of Mon Calamari lies in ruin. Your army, of its own accord, did so while stealing the latest super star destroyer, in league with mon calamari resistance forces. It's why the genocide is even occurring." There is a strained face on the Emperor as he continues, "You are right to question this use of resources. While I do feel for the Mon Calamari, this is a waste. Taking out the Sith should be our main priority as it would do more good for the galaxy. But, my knight is the only one I can trust to train my men and he is too good of a man to leave the mon calamari resistance forces to fight on their own. You're here to get back the knight by being his replacement. At some point, I expect you easier to recall than my knight." A quizzical look comes over his face. "As for the sith ships, that really comes down to what the mon calamari are planning to do. We have no plans on fighting said ships. If you're worried your abilities as a pilot may be wasted, the mon calamari are in possession of numerous underwater crafts that could use your expertise."

The emperor lets his words hang for a bit before turning his back on you all and facing towards his window. "You are all dismissed. I have business to attend to."

What do you all do?

Zara Vandorian, Imperial Knight

"As you command, my lord," Zara said with a shallow bow before the leaving the room. She was relieved to hear that Brin would be given command; as much as she might have liked the idea of being put in command herself, Brin was the responsible choice. She was simply glad to have it confirmed that the Emperor would not put a non-Knight in charge – although his reference to Mina as a Knight surprised her. Zara had not considered her a true Knight, but perhaps the Emperor thought differently. Or perhaps he merely spoke imprecisely. In any case, it was not a major concern.

As soon as the whole group had left, she turned to Brin. "I am ready to leave as soon as you wish, sir," she stated simply. The Emperor had not given them specific orders about when to depart, but Zara hoped to leave as soon as possible; the longer they waited, the more innocents would be slaughtered by the Sith.

Mina

Mina takes a copy of the technical readouts for the shipyard, as well as a holo image of this Sinde guy, just in case. She falls in step with the others as they head for the hangar, scrolling through the different options she has available to her for her disguise as a freighter crewoman cum smuggler. She settled on #2, the outfit based on the clothes she had brought with her long ago from the Ascendancy - A dark green flight jacket over a V-neck short sleeved tunic. Charcoal grey baggy technician's trousers and boots completed the outfit, but not before her holo suit rendered a perfect 3D replica of a workman's, just in case she wanted to seem extra handy.

The suit flickered a few times, revealing the many interwoven hexagonal holoprojector quart that made up the surface of the suit before rendering back the majority of the outfit. It always flickered more when it tried to initiate a preset while she was moving... ah well, perhaps she could get a better model with more presets in time. She looked down at her "workbelt," faithfully rendered in three dimensions and correctly animated to sway slight as it was slung at an angle on her hip... this angle was necessary, in order for the hydrospanner hanging to side to almost entirely mask her lightsaber. Sure, there were ways to achieve the same effect with the Force, but the technology worked almost as well, and why tax her mental focus when she had more important things to worry about... like this mission.

Kam Randin

Satisfied with Roan Fel's assessment of the Quarren situation, Kam falls into step with the others on the way to the docking bay. That the Quarren are scared karkless by the Sith Imperial assault on their Mon Calamari neighbors is evident, but Kam can't help but feel that his Emperor is misinterpreting the Quarren as a people -- while it is likely that the average Quarren might see themselves as neutral, perhaps even sympathetic to the Mon Calamari cause, Kam's assessment would conclude that Quarren in positions of civic leadership are almost certain to take a pro-Sith stance. The Quarren people have seethed under the perceived dominance of the Mon Calamari for centuries, and their reputation for pragmatism combined with a power vacuum on the planet would naturally pull them into an embrace with the Sith Empire. The Quarren leaders' motivations may not be vindictive toward the Mon Cals, but they are certainly going to support any status quo that sees the Quarren taking the reins of planetary leadership. The key to affecting change will be to change that motivation.

Sitting in the hangar bay of Bastion is this old, decaying YT-2400. It's age is apparent in every scratch, speck of dust, and coweb. It's a real hunk of junk, but it's supposed to look that way. Inconspicuous and something a smaller, lesser known merchant company would use. As you step inside, the place seems just as you would have expected it. It is a standard YT-2400 interior and even has a sabacc deck and a holochess table. There is a datapad with a ship manifest revealing that the cargo holds about 2 months worth of food suitable for quarrens as well as 2 months worth of quarren ale. It also reveals the ship is officially owned by Dash Rendar, a correllian name. Either a fake name or a previous owner. Any of the humans of your group could easily pass as a correllian, it's not like they have any physical differences from any other human. It also mentions a small crew manning the ship and gives a list of fake names appropriate to your species.

The ship seems all ready to take off and everything is ready to go.

You will need to go into Hyperspace to get to Mon Calamari.

Kam boards the waiting YT-2400 and, after dropping off his precious few possessions in an empty storage locker alongside a row of bunks, makes his way to the cockpit to check out the forged ship's records provided by the Emperor's people. It seems as though Naval Intelligence was pretty thorough, coming up with suitable aliases and names for each of the ship's "crew". He cocks a half-smile as he notices one of the forged identities is a Corellian, apparently some no-doubt fictitious smuggler by the name of Dash Rendar.

I grew up not too awfully far from Corellian space, and faking their general attitude should be a piece of cake. Anyone have any objections if I put on this guy's skin in our dealings with the Sith?" Upon boarding the ship, Zara was happy to technical matters to her new comrades; computers and engines had never been her area of expertise. Instead, she set about storing her few possessions, including her armour – the iconic outfit of the Imperial Knights was obviously inappropriate when discretion was required. For the time being, civilian clothing would do. Her lightsaber was another matter, however, and she found a place for it in an inner pocket of her jacket.

After receiving Brin's instructions to meet in two hours, she quickly went over the alias provided for her. Some Coruscanti smuggler – she doubted it would matter much, but she memorized the information nonetheless. Still finding herself with time to kill, she decided to practice her meditation. It was not a common practice among Imperial Knights – a bit too "Jedi" for most – but Zara found it useful.
