Two days before Trump's inauguration, it's time to get out the bricks and mortar and slap together a top 8 list of history's greatest barriers to entry!

1. The Bar Lev Line

Ever think to yourself "how did Israel keep hold of the Sinai?" - this bad boy!

Not just a trench, the Bar Lev Line was a modern wall with a hella big moat to keep Nasser's Nationalists way the hell out! Eventually breached by the "Hosing Hero" Anwar Sadat, this beauty perplexed the UAR Usurper for a few good years!

2. Hadrian's Wall

The Romans built a wall - and the Brits certainly paid for it!

With forts every few miles and an elaborate system of torch-based technology to back them up, it's no wonder the Romans stopped the Caledonian menace in its tracks! It might be a heap of stones to our eyes, but back then, it gave security to the Empire's northern frontier. And how!

3. La Ligne Morice

The other French wall that starts with 'M'!

Bristling with machine gun nests, ground-searching radar, and electrified wire, this wall sure made it hard for the FLN to do the dirty on the French military - at least until they all ran away!

4. The Marib Dam

For thousands of years, youthful Yemenis have supped from this source!

Constantly under threat from saboteurs, foreign attack, and steady silting, somehow they keep this baby going. Maybe it's a stretch to call it a wall, but it's pretty dam important!

5. The Anti-Fascist Protection Wall

Or as you and I might know it, the Berlin Wall!

For twenty-eight years it stood as a concrete reminder of the Cold War. Then all of a sudden, BOOM! Remember this baby coming down? Epic.

6. The Great Green Wall

Finally a good wall!

Before this programme, many African Union states were at loggerheads about desertification - and it turns out the only way to fix that was to plant a forest! With thousands of square miles being planted year-on-year, it won't be long until we see if it's working - good luck!

7. The Great Wall of China

Oh you thought we forgot about this one?

Although it began more than two millenia ago, the modern great wall comes from around the time of European voyages to America, when the Ming wanted to protect themselves from foreign influences. They didn't find each other, though - pretty ironic, don't you think?!

8. The Walls of Sacsayhuaman

These Precolumbian parapets once guarded one of the key cities of the Incan Empire!

They might be crazy paving now, but back then these ramparts reduced attacking armies to nothing, and even Pedro Sancho talked about the incredible efficacy of Cuzco's citadel, even using much of its stonework to construct a new capital - now that must have been a block party!

Leave comments below for any embrasures you think we forgot to erect in this list!!

It's only about 3 and a half hours on the train from Dover to Newcastle (and if you book in advance quite reasonably priced), and after that it's a hop, skip, and a jump and you're at the wall - all without tangling with Norman Nottinghamshire - great historical dramas often miss out the odd hour here or there.
