I sat down today and watched the debate on youtube. I am biased as I live in a country that has universal healthcare.

Overall, I think that Sanders did a better job. I didn't like the way the hair salon question played out though.

Do you think that Sanders could do better in that particular question? In what way?

Honestly? Not really. a lot of business owners in the us view any critisism of their business practices as you telling them how to run business. This is why a lot of small business fail, because the owner fucks up and refuses to acknowledge that the gently caress up, double down, then blame govment regs when they go outta business.

govment regs can be cause of this, especially when used to assist large polypolies, but making sure your workers have health insurance ain't it.

to that end, the best thing to do is to just come out and say "if you cant provide health care and stay in business your a lovely business owner"

I think he could have done a better job there if he'd steered the conversation towards single payer and making it so healthcare isn't tied to employment. That would ensure everyone is covered and level the playing field for employers.

That was my thought too. If I understand correctly the current system (please correct me where I am wrong), a employer that has lets say 45 employees has an active interest to not hire more people, because he is going to pay more money per person than he did before. This combined with a business that has small profit margins essentially stops growth, since keeping the employee number lower than the limit helps you undercut bigger businesses while still steamrolling smaller ones.

In a single payer system, that is not the case, right?

I don't get why people have such a hard on for small business. If you're actually in the position to be able to hire people to do work for your, you're now part of the bourgeoise and should be led to the gallows.

I liked how Sanders pointedly asked her what happens if any of her employees get sick, and her response was literally "I dunno."

That part was good and personally I would have loved to see him just eviscerate her for that, but that wouldn't have been a good thing to do in that setting. Which is why I think it would have been more effective to use it as a chance to talk about single payer and still call her out by bringing up that some companies get a competitive advantage by forcing their employees to work without benefits that should be standard.

what if the government took over healthcare and heavily subsidized things like food, housing and utilities, and provided a minimum income to all americans, then people could afford to take jobs with lower wages!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?! that almost seems like it would be in a small business owner's interests

How about the government puts ownership of the means of production in the hands of the workers? Then we would all be small business owners :)

im afraid the government isnt going 2 give us any such thing and we'd have 2 rise up en mass and seize the means of production, which is an excellent second option

Sounds like effort :(

I'm afraid the reason why people think Bernard did alright is because he was the only one onstage that wasn't arguing that people deserve to suffer and die. Crooze was babbling about fake numbers and taxes only rich people's kids ever see, but it sells to the people who think they're temporarily embarrass millionaires.

Is some enterprising young socialist going to pick up the torch Sanders lit? And are they going to be able to tell whatever Republican lich they share a stage with that they're a lying psychopath anytime they talk about how oppressive European healthcare is? Trump proved that it's a strategy that works against these people.

What has owning a Fantastic Sams franchise enabled you to do that you wouldn’t have been able to do working for someone else? The flexibility is great. It’s so much better than it was during 30 years of corporate and government work. There are many days when I work at my computer in my pajamas at home. I’m in charge of my own schedule and can design it around anything my son has going on. I was in a position this past year to purchase a lake home. That’s something I’ve wanted forever. I was finally able to afford to do it, and it’s because of my Fantastic Sams businesses. Fantastic Sams has given me the lifestyle I really wanted. I paid my dues for many years working for someone else. I feel very fortunate to be a Fantastic Sams franchisee. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished. I feel like I’ve lived the American Dream — no doubt about it.

he actually did make this point a bit later when the issue of access came up and he went back to her, but i agree, it would have been more effective if he had brought it up directly after her question (and in addition to telling her she was bad for not offering health insurance to her employees)
