A contract signed by a minor is not binding!

It has been a rough few centuries for the Rogue Traders of House Surikov. Despite heroic efforts no-one has been able to maintain the web of financial, family and influence ties that Volodymyr Surikov IX established before disappearing a millennium previously, and one after another your allies and vassals have dried up or been split away by your rivals. The last funds and the last ship were in danger of being repossessed by the enemies of your kind - tax men and creditors howling alike for your demise. Then a message from the Adeptus Mechanicus that explained nothing but promised everything:

quote:

ATTN SURIKOV: LAST INVOICE CLEARED STOP PROJECT 'R' COMPLETED STOP REQUIRE YOU TAKE DELIVERY IMMEDIATELY FROM FORGE WORLD KAPPAX0981 STOP

A hasty journey found you in the presence of one Magos Brecht - technically two Magi Brecht, as she had undergone the Rite of Duplessence with her own sister at some point - who explained that your famous ancestor had left a salvaged ship in the custody of the Mechanicus for repair and reconditioning, expecting to be back in the few decades it would take with funds to pay them. It had taken centuries, but enough money had been paid that the work was finally done, and the Magi was utterly thrilled to be able to finally clear this 'absurd white elephant' project from her dry-dock. The ship was ready to go, she said, and did you mind that they had accidentally named it while waiting for you to arrive?

So after selling your existing ship to cover the cost of crewing a massive Grand Cruiser, gathering your closest allies and supporters, and pausing only to make threats of military annihilation to your least favorite relatives should they follow you, everyone takes an uneventful warp trip to:

Port Wander: Famous gateway to the infamous Koronus Expanse, the last bastion of Imperial authority and civilization before plunging into the darkness that borders the Calixis Sector. There's only one reason for a Rogue Trader and their crew to come to a place like this, and that's to gather supplies and information before venturing into the Expanse in search of untapped veins of wealth and glory. That's certainly why your crew is here, and certainly not because you are fleeing the creditors nipping at your heels like so many ravenous squigs. The To Be Determined lies at anchor off the station, having taken on food, water, air and reaction mass for the plasma drives. The size of your ship makes it easy to pick out among the various Chartist trader vessels, pilgrim transports, and Navy frigates that bask in the harsh red glow of Rubycon II. From the observation deck you even fancy you can see all the way to the Maw itself, churning hungrily and awaiting your attempt to pass through it...

Of course, the only reason to risk that perilous voyage will be for profit! Footfall may be a hive of scum and villainy, but they still need regular deliveries of vital supplies. And surely the Adeptus and Departmentos of the Imperium have favours that need doing on the other side - nothing so gauche as asking for work, of course, just a...gentlemanly understanding. For large amounts of money. So, Explorers, do you approach the:

  • Adeptus Mechanicus?
  • Administratum?
  • Ecclesiarchy?
  • Imperial Navy?
  • Inquisition? haha no
  • Nobility?
  • Rogue Traders?
  • Underworld?

Any of these organizations can set you up with something to do. Or maybe you have a scheme yourself, or at least a lead on something to take to Footfall and cover your expenses? Any last minute shopping to do before vanishing forever into the Emperor-forsaken wasteland? What do you do?

Ignorance, the root of all evil
Volodymyr Surikov XIII, a.k.a. Lody the Lucky

As Surikov admired his new voidship through an observation on the Port, he wondered how long it would take to have a statue of himself added to the augur array. "Sumpter, the gold filigree on the front of my ship is looking a little dull from here," he remarks. "See if we can't put a bit of shine into it, eh? Don't want people thinking we're Navy, hah! That reminds me, we need a new set of serviceware for the banquet hall. The current ones are at least a decade out of style, and I could tell that Magos was judging me for it."

He whirls around and eyes his inner circle of officers and advisors, rubbing his hands together gleefully "So, what should we do first? Paradise planets are hard to come by, but I think if we all knuckle down we should be able to find one before the year is out. Wait, no, that won't work. We don't nearly have enough infrastructure to set up a colony, let alone manage it. We'll need to do a bit of work, set up some contacts, generate a few favours, yes? I'll speak to some people, see if I can't rub elbows - is it elbows? Or shoulders? Doesn't matter - I'll rub bodyparts and try to fast-track this colony business. You all just, I don't know, make me look good. OK? Good."

I'm going to hit up the Nobility, looking for a job that can make us some friends. Charm 58 + Peer (Nobility) 10 + Honour Amongst One's Peers 5 = 73.

There he is!

Mikhael Lyte
Heir to a Fallen Family

Mikhael follows behind Volodymyr as they walk down the observation deck. Behind and to the left, as fitting for the High Factotem. He has grown used to the somewhat meandering style of leadership the Rogue Trader practices, although he still isn't sure if it is sincere or a ploy to get potential opponents to underestimate him. He waits patiently as the captain frets over the filigree and finery of the ship, knowing that their real business would show up eventually. Previous attempts to speed the process had not yielded positive results.

"Your intention is to meet with the nobility of this station then? Very good," he motions slightly to one of their entourage, a scribe who quickly sorts through a stack of parchments and presents them to Mikhael. He scans the pages, a compilation of the nobles on this world and their interests, "It's been some time since I have traveled out this far, but if colony-making is your goal then I believe I can give you some names of those who might be willing to... finance, such an endeavor. If it pleases you, captain?"

He bows his head slightly, offering the Rogue Trader a quickly assembled list of names and brief biographies and business connections of likely candidates.

I'm going to roll Inquiry to help out Volodymyr, asking around for nobles who would be interested in such a venture to speed the process along, as well as any details that might help the negotiations.

Pillbug

Erika Coronado

Psssh, typical Rogue Trader, thinking the Nobles were ever the solution to anything. Oh yeah, they might have more "money," but who needed that when you had righteousness and endless legions of screaming fanatics on your side? As soon as she gets an opportunity to slip away from the incredibly boring officers' meeting, she boards the station and heads for the largest Imperial chapel on the station. Two lucky underlings get to carry the Reliquary of Saint Drusus she'd "borrowed." Most of the ship's priests had adapted to her unique management style and profanity-laden sermons fairly well, although quite a few of them were still a little bitter about her lack of formal training. They still knew better than to say anything about it.

Hours of arguing with Ecclesiarchical flunkies ensues. Apparently when you burst into the chapel covered in ganger marks and piercings, they don't immediately recognize you as a member of the cloth. They verify her credentials as a Rogue Trader's chief Confessor with unconcealed distaste, which turns into awe (tinged with a bit of horror) when she produces the stasis casket containing a fragment of Saint Drusus's power sword. Eventually, she either convinces them or they get sick of dealing with her, and she's ushered into a Deacon's office. She taps a sharp metal finger on his desk and motions to the Reliquary.

"Yeah, that's exactly what you think it is. A sacred relic of Saint Drusus, given to me that I might pursue a sacred mission aboard the vessel of the Rogue Trader Volodymyr Surikov XIII. We intend to bring the blazing radiance of the God-Emperor's light to Footfall and beyond, and I want your assistance and your direction. You point us at a problem and I assure you it will be fixed. So c'mon, dammit, I'm sick of arguing about this. I need to get back to the ship to conduct Imperial Mass. Make with the sacred duty already. Oh, and can I borrow that book? No? How about that one?"

I'm going straight to the Ecclesiarchy to wave around my sacred relic and generally make a nuisance of myself until someone throws a holy mission my way to get me out of their office. Oh, and I'm gonna try to pick up some sacred texts.

Leopold Sumpter, Former Imperial Navy Warrant Officer

Leopold is the first on the observation deck, making sure all was ready for the Rogue Trader's arrival. Leopold makes sure tea and recaf is set out by the galley crew. Leopold stands by the door greeting everyone as they come in with a smile and a nod. His uniform is fully pressed and his boots a deep and shiny black. He opts not to cover his chest with his campaign medals, and instead opts for his service ribbons. Once Lord Surikov enters Leopold suddenly straightens up and shouts at the top of his lungs, "LORD CAPTAIN ON DECK!" He then takes to falling in a few steps behind the Rogue Trader as he makes his rounds.

At the mention of the Filigree being dull, Leopold immediately summons a near-by rating, "You heard the captain, he want's that Filligree so shiny it'll blind ya from a VU away. Put together a work crew to go out there in voids and polish them up. Anyone who volunteers gets an extra ration of grog and six hours of extra shore leave. If no one volunteers, then conscript the ratings, and cut everyone's grog rations in half for a day."

He turns back and continues to silently follow along as everyone puts in their two Thrones worth. As everyone meanders away, Leopold speaks up, "if I may sir, I would recommend we contact the Navy if they have any work for us to do out in the Expanse, and I don't only say that because I'm formal Navy my Lord," he chuckles a bit finding it funny. "I've fought the forces of Chaos many times, and I've been up against more than one Repulsive-class ship before. These things can take a beating, dish one out to match, and are more agile than any ship her size has any right to be. She's a ship of war if ever there has been one, and I'm sure we could earn a lot of Influence hunting down some piddly little raiders on the Navy's behalf."

Leopold then stands at rest. He hopes the Rogue Trader takes his advice, but it doe not bother him one way or the other. Leopold expected that service on a rogue trader vessel was going to be different than Navy work, and he knew that the Warrant gives the Rogue Trader legal right to do drat near anything he wants, and so long as those drat things weren't working with Points or Chaos, Leopold would do as he was told.

There he is!

Mikhael Lyte

Mikhael nods slightly as first officer speaks, "If I may, I agree with my esteemed colleague. We can offer great service to the Imperial Navy, and they have both clout and resources to repay us. For example, if we can find a world out in the void which is suitable for a colony, it would only improve our standing if it became a naval base as well. Moreover, the ship itself still has room for improvements, which might be easier to obtain with the Navy's sanction. If it pleases the captain, perhaps the first officer and I should meet with the IN representatives on the station?"

Leopold Sumpter, Former Imperial Navy Warrant Officer

Leopold claps Mikhael on the back, "This one gets it. Having a Naval station in orbit is going to deter a lot of would be attackers. Plus, unlike other Imperial Institutions, the Navy ain't going to much care about what is going on planetside. You go getting Nobles or the Church involved they're going to want a share of the action, or want to go all missionary. Only thing you'd have to worry about Navy on is shore leave and press ganging. The former will be a source of income for your little pleasure colony, and the later is a great way to get rid of your undesirables. Imperial planets love to empty their prisons of criminals and enemies to fill up the labor demands of a passing ship. I should know, I've spent a career breaking in planet bound troublemakers to a life of servitude in the void."

That warm and fuzzy feeling.

Katherine Carpenter - Mistress-at-Arms

Katherine nods as the captain enters the bridge. She stands at attention, towering over most of the others present. As the ex-Navy guy start belting out honorifics she waits her turn, still trying to get a feel for how formal Surikov runs things. Her old regiment tended toward grunting and nodding instead of saluting or parading so she was still learning how the nobs did business. As the two men start making out their plans for pirate hunting she takes the moment to speak her concerns. Deciding to bother the seneschal with her problems first before annoying the captain, she waits until Surikov turns his attentions elsewhere. "Lyte, I hate to bring you bad news, but I've done a run-through of the arms section of the crew and we are...not as proficient as we could be. I understand that they're there mostly to suppress uppity ratings, but if we're going to close with and destroy external enemies we're going to need more skill, discipline, and bigger guns. I was unable to get ahold of basic arms, but I realize Port Wander isn't a forgeworld. If you have any contacts that can get us better small armaments, we'll be able to hold our own." She glances over at Sumpter and back to the seneschal. "As I'm sure you know, ships own the skies, but unless you want to vaporize everything, you need those boots on the ground to hold it. If we go through the Navy, maybe part of the compensation can include a few hundred crates of surplus shotties or lasguns and the like. I just don't want to deal with a boarding party of orks when our men have nothing but revolvers and sticks."

One thousand lasguns? TN 32 [lol nope]

Ignorance, the root of all evil
Volodymyr Surikov XIII, a.k.a. Lody the Lucky

Surikov pauses mid-stride and turns to face his First Officer and Factotum. "I've just had a thought. Once this colony is set up, I'll be far too busy relaxing to spend any time organising defenses. Now," he exclaims, holding up a finger, "I could assemble my own fleet of ships and orbital platforms, but that would be costly. Why don't we, get this, why don't we approach the Navy, get them on our side with one or two well-placed favours and hey presto! Free defense detail! Sumpter, I want you heading this up." He points his finger at the ex-Navy officer. "Don't trust any of them, though. drat Navy types are all bastards," he adds with a grin.

You ever do the chicken dance at a wake? That really bothers people.
Vimmik

"Magnificent..."

Seeing the ship for the first time brings a real pride to Vimmik's pseudo-heart. He would be the one to tend it instead of being trapped on some backwater world and left to the predation of raiders, nor would he be the one stuck in a templum fawning over old machines and engaging in routine oiling rituals. No, this time he would be the overseer of a grand machine of war right from the Golden Age of Mankind. Granted, the ship was new, but it was all based on the ancient templates, unchanged for thousands of years. Would that they could traverse to the forge world so Vimmik might shake the hand of every man and woman who saw this mighty vessel completed.

"I may be biased, but the Mechanicus might be suitably awed by our ship to hear us out if we were to offer our services. I doubt, however, that they would like to see it placed in undue danger. But a few tasks might go a long ways toward proving our reliability. Word would spread, others would seek us out."

This new ship seemed pretty swank, not the swankest but it was definitely up there. The Lord-Captain was unusually eccentric, but as long as he delegated properly there could be no complaints. The Arch-Militant was a Catachan of all things, and the Astropath was the very image of a twisted feral who happened to have accursed powers. And then there was that fanatical missionary, they'd probably be spending the voyage flogging sinful-looking ratings while chanting verses about Saint Drusus. Why did Rogue Traders attract such outliers? More importantly, why did they hire them? At least the Void Master was a dependable Navy sort, hopefully he didn't have an original thought in his head.

"Lord-Captain, before we leave Imperial space I will check my contacts for the latest unofficial news that may be gathered." It's vague on purpose, can't be too sure about the new boss and company. What's good for the Navigator is good for the ship, but it's also easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Surely a favour or deal can be worked out with the resident legitimate businessmen. Who knows when we'll next be in civilised space? At least I managed to get that contained of shimmerweave loaded before we leave.

Port Wander was a new locale, and Falkine didn't so much have contacts as a belief that when asked, everyone would fall in line. Except that so-called haute couture boutique, completely bereft of holographic projectors and electro glyphs. Maybe that was a sign that civilisation was far gone already. Following an innate sense of trends and power, she beelines for what must be one of the finest seedy establishments in the station, intent on getting something done.

There he is!

Mikhael Lyte

Unfortunately everything is going wrong. The Navy representative is cagey, and the reputation of the Repulsive class isn't helping build bridges. Mikhael's businessman charm doesn't seem to help, and may in fact make things worse as the meeting continues. When Mikhael excuses himself, it is clear that although they have a mission of sorts but things have not gotten off on the right foot.

The meeting flusters the seneschal enough that he almost scuttles a trade deal for Carpenter's weaponry before it starts. It is only through a stroke of luck that he recovers his cool, and completes a trade on more amicable terms with an old contact from his days as an arms... "dealer" before he joined the crew.

When he concludes his deal he rejoins with Carpenter, "Master at Arms, it wasn't... my best work, but I have managed to acquire a sizable number of weapons for your perusal.

He opens one of the crates to present a sample of what he has found, "An old friend, let's say, owed me a bit of favor. One thousand assault stubbers. Fewer than you were hoping for, I'm sure, but I have every confidence that you'll be able to make due. Does this meet your request adequately?"

A contract signed by a minor is not binding!
Surikov, Lyte:

quote:

The Gilt Processionals are the vast and labyrinthine markets of Port Wander in which one can barter for strange and exotic wares or lose one’s life to a thief ’s blade. The Gilt Processionals stretch for nearly a kilometre in a wide arc across the port, meandering between levels down wide holds that have long lost their original purpose, and twisting through cramped compartments thick with the scent of burning spices and heady narcotics. This ragged arc houses thousands of traders, whose stalls compete for space with criers hawking theirs dubious wares. Almost anything can be found in the Gilt Processionals if one has enough coin and knows who to ask.

Searching for backers for a planetary colonization project is not your ordinary shopping trip - but then very few of the tasks undertaken by Rogue Traders are ordinary. And the Gilt Processional is no ordinary market. Splashing cash around and letting it be known you are making a trip to the Expanse with bold plans gets you an audience with a mixed crowd of money-lenders, wealthy Imperial nobility, and one other Rogue Trader - Syras Yurth, an old hand of middling rank, constrained from greatness by risk aversion. His armed freighter Fiscal Conservatism is undergoing a refit that may take a year or more, and it's clear he's the senior partner in this little gathering. After a passable meal, amasec, and cigars, he gets to the point:

"Surikov, m'boy, colonization's a two edged sword. Can bankrupt as easily as it enriches. Now, I think...we think...you're up to the task. But we want to know where all those thrones are going to go. Bring back survey data for a good site, put a survey beacon on it, come back and we'll put the money up for a proper joint venture."

Lesser Endeavor - Scout the site of a new colony - 900 Achievement Points required - 2PF on completion

Sumpter, Lyte:

quote:

Though the entirety of Port Wander is technically the dominion of the Imperial Navy, their stronghold in this den of rogues and wanderers is the Command Bastion. It sits at the heart of the station, separated by code-sealed hatches, isolation bulkheads, and sentry weapons. Behind these defences are the staff and systems that keep Port Wander functioning and safe.

Commander Larius Sans is the unhappy military governor of Port Wander, overworked and harassed by civilians of all kinds while watching his career stagnate at the helm of a space station with little chance for glory. When Lyte presses him to see if there is some small service they can offer he grins unpleasantly.

"As it happens, there is something you can do to assist the Imperial Navy. Freighters coming from Footfall are complaining about the presence of an Ork raiding force. Here, check these coordinates and kill anything there with green skin. Should be no problem for your ship, hmm? Bring me the augur logs as proof."

He presses a dataslate into your hand with information for your navigator. Before you can ask any questions about the size or composition of the Ork force you are escorted out of the command center.

Lesser Endeavor - Destroy Ork Raiding Force - 900 Achievement Points required - 2PF on completion

Coronado

quote:

The Solstice Imperialis is a derelict pilgrim ship that once ferried Pilgrims to the station for many years, until their plasma drive failed to ignite. Despite the catastrophic implosion, no one was injured and the pilgrims took it as a sign of the Emperor’s grace. Over time the vessel was worked into the fabric of Port Wander itself and is now given over to chapels and sanctuaries of a hundred different branches of the Imperial Creed. Missionaries wishing to recruit militias of the faithful to accompany them beyond the Great Warpstorms often come to the Solstice to find strong souls willing to follow their faith beyond the circle of Imperial rule.

Arch-Proctor Ngamble, lead representative of the Ecclesiarchy in this complex and fractious temple, finally manages to get between you and the valuable texts, locking the cabinet. Her face is a mask of fury at your absurd demands and lack of decorum, but when she takes a second look at you her expression changes. A mix of calculating and hopeful...

"It must be the providence of the God-Emperor that bought you to me today, sister. We just received word that the last known location of a relic carried by a missionary from this station into the Expanse has been found by explorers based out of Footfall. If you can bring us back the sacred finger-bones of St. Elliswher then I'll happily overlook you breaking into my office and making demands. I even have a number of brave pilgrims who have expressed interest in pursuing the relic, if you will take them."

Lesser Endeavor - Recover relic from lost missionary - 900 Achievement Points required - 2PF on completion

Additionally you now have 100 idiots to die for you.

Oges

quote:

The Blind Eye is a small-but-popular tavern near the station’s sunward shuttle bays, frequented by void travellers looking to do business. Many Rogue Traders use it as a meeting place for recruiting new comrades for their next voyage, especially those with prior experience in the Expanse.

Today, you're meeting with representatives of the Blue Cordon, a criminal syndicate who operated under the guise of a legitimate export business. After passing their background checks and managing to mimic the secret handshake, they've agreed to bring you in as a temporary partner in transporting some illicit goods to Footfall. Why Footfall needs more illicit goods is not clear to you, but the numbers involved seem agreeable to you. Their apparent leader, a slim and androgynous type with a fancy bionic eye, mumbles something incomprehensible in a peculiar thief's cant. Maybe it meant 'good luck'?

Lesser Endeavor - Make substantial narcotics delivery - 900 Achievement Points required - 2PF on completion

Vimmik

Although not inclined to do you any favors re: installation of sacred bionics, there is of course always work to be done in the Expanse for bold explorators. A message in binary from the office of Constructor Acholus, the second ranking Priest of Mars on the stations, directs you to (at your earliest convenience) track down an anomalous signal that has been interfering with data-relays around several stellar features being observed by research stations.

Lesser Endeavor - Investigate anomalous signal- 900 Achievement Points required - 2PF on completion

If anyone else wants to look for trouble work or do any shopping before you get to start having adventures, now's the time.

"Fingerbones of Saint Elliswher, got it. Next you hear from us we'll have your relic, mark my words. Direct your pilgrims to the To Be Determined. Have a blessed day, Arch-Precentor."

Erika whirls on her heel and slips out the door, beleaguered relic-bearers in tow. Once she gets to the street, she pulls out the book out of her sleeve where she'd palmed it. She'd been holding when Ngamble turned away to lock the cabinet, and, well, the Arch-Precentor hadn't said anything about it, so she probably wouldn't miss it. Really, it was a gift of apology for ever doubting Erika's faith and motives. Erika had just chosen to take it preemptively.

Now, if only she could read.

You ever do the chicken dance at a wake? That really bothers people.
Vimmik

The wandering tech-priest returns to the ship to report his lead to the captain and crew. It was odd to get contacted by such a prestigious figure as Constructor Acholus, but perhaps the equally great prestige of the warship Vimmik had found himself on had not gone unnoticed after all. If nothing else, the grand cruiser could remove whatever this anomaly was through sheer brute force. They certainly had the firepower to do so. But with a few... adjustments, it may be possible to get detailed readings and find the source intact. That would certainly be a task worthy of praise within the machine cult. Not that Vimmik is seeking such things. But the possibilities are intriguing anyway.

"Captain, I have made contact with the Adeptus Mechanicus and they have an interesting opportunity should we wish to follow up on it. Something is interfering with several research stations. Finding the source would earn the gratitude of the adepts and the Omnissiah, surely."

"Leopold, I think we may have just be assigned a suicide mission. Do you think the crew is ready to go hunting greenskins of an unspecified force and disposition?" Lyte asks as they walk back to the ship from their meeting with Commander Sans.

Leopold Sumpter, Former Imperial Navy Warrant Officer

As they walk away Leopold shrugs at Mikhael, "Don't rightly know. Have to get the crew out on a shakedown mission to see what good they are. Also don't know much about greenskins. If we were fighting a force of pirates in raiders, I'd wager on us. I'd give us even odds against Eldar Corsairs, since the Repulsive is fast for her size and the Knife Ears don't expect that. Chaos force would give us trouble, similar ships and likely more skill. As much as I want to take this ship out there and kill things with her, it might not hurt to do another less outwardly dangerous mission to get the crew used to piloting the thing, not to mention myself. Spent a career blowing these things up, not helming them."

His negotiations with Yurth complete, Surikov seals the deal with a shot of Martyr's Blessing, a liquor supposedly containing the tears of Saint Berenice. "You can consider that planet as good as found!" he exclaims, fighting back tears from the strength of the drink.

Returning to the Determined, Surikov spies the ship through a window and tuts to himself. "That gilt just will not do. I must have it replaced with platinum." Once aboard, he gives the order to cast off from the station and plot a course for the nearest uncharted paradise planet, then retires to his chambers for a nap.

Port Wander Loading Bay 1305

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJGvmBiNiDY

The size of To Be Determined makes it difficult to service at many smaller stations. Fortunately Port Wander is built for the most impressive bulk haulers and warships - if not for the lack of raw materials you could build a cruiser here from scratch. What this means for Lyte, Carpenter, Vimmik, andOges right now is that when a kiloton load of sealed cargo crates labeled "Grains" arrive they can be fed directly into the gaping maw of the ship up specialized mechanical ramps. If you wanted that. Extremely conveniently, the customs officers and dock enforcers seem to have all taken their lunch breaks at the same time, or found more important places to be.

Options:

  • Inspect the cargo through whatever means (Warning! Failures could jeopardize relations with the client!)
  • Help load the Cargo or direct crew to do so (Success will speed the process up)
  • Ensure privacy and security during the loading process.

Anyone who want to be in this scene should show up, as there will be a fight very shortly

As it was second watch, Leopold found himself on the bridge, wishing that whatever final preparations were being done finished so that way he could be the one to take the ship out before third watch started. Not like it mattered, he was first officer, if they didn't leave until third watch, he could still just come in and take the helm anyway. When Carpenter gets a vox and suddenly scurries off to collect some armsmen, Leopold gets very curious.

He follows her down to the cargo bay where he finds Lyte and a few others gathered around a loading conveyor and a bunch of crates full of grain waiting to load. "What in Thor's blood is all the commotion? Before a reply can be made, Sumpter looks upon the impending cargo, "Make sure that load is distributed evenly across the ship, all that weight in one place could throw off her balance.

When he notices that Lyte is on edge a little, Sumpter rests his hands on his pistol and sword, which remain at his side.

It's a grand cruiser, for the Omnissiah's sake. With an unfortunate class name, granted, but they could stack ten times as much cargo along a single bulkhead and only gain a 0.0039% rotational list to that side. The sheer mass of the ship would keep inertia on their side. What the hell is Sumpter talking about? But he's in charge for the loading so Vimmik agrees. But not entirely. He gathers some scanning equipment and heads to the cargo bay. Whatever this run is, it's not going to endanger Vimmik's ship.

Should I attempt a requisition of an auspex or can I assume that the ship would have at least one onboard?

EDIT: Nevermind. My servo-skull has an auspex.

Pillbug

Erika Coronado

"Get the relic back to the chapel and, uh, do whatever the hell you were supposed to be doing before I recruited you for that bit of sacred artifact-bearing. I'll be right along to the Chapel Primaris, but first I'm swinging by the cargo bay, y'know, make sure our pilgrims have boarded."

Erika meanders down to the Cargo Bay, trying to sound her way through the book that had been so graciously (and involuntarily) donated to her. Step one: understanding the title. She was pretty sure that Thorian had something to do with Saint Thor, and as for Missal, that was definitely a kind of explosive. Hopefully this thing had some recipes for sacred grenades, then. Alright, two words down. At this rate she'd be done in several decades. Maybe she'd strong-arm one of those high-and-mighty scholarly types in the Chapel into teaching her how to actually read during the Warp Jump. Smug bastards might as well be useful for once.

Erika comes to a stop at the sound of the cargo klaxon and glances around, confused. She'd gone a little further into the bay than she'd thought. So easy to get distracted with your nose in a book, even one you hadn't technically opened yet. She glances around and notices the other officers. Well, they wouldn't be here if this wasn't important. Time to do a little subtle information-gathering.

"Oy, hey, yeah. Fancy finding you lot. I was just lookin' for some pilgrims, made a wrong turn while I was contemplating, y'know, the Emperor and such. So wuzzat getting loaded?"

I have nothing to add, I was just lured by the promise of violence.

There he is!

Mikhael Lyte

"Worry not First Officer, I assure you that the loading procedures will take all due consideration to minimize the impact of our cargo on ship maneuverability. That is very much beside the point right now, however. This seems to be a peculiar form of "grain" which makes dock officials mysteriously disappear."

The Seneschal bows slightly as the techpriest arrives, "Ah, Magos Vimmik. I am so glad you could make it here to help with this situation personally. I want to know what is in these containers. If you can do it without breaking them open, that would be ideal, but I am of the very strong opinion that nothing is being stored in our holds unless I know exactly what it is."

When he hears the ship's confessor he turns, giving a small nod of acknowledgement. Secretly he wonders if these pilgrims are paying customers, but the thought doesn't linger in his head for long.

While as a player I'd love to be in this scene, I feel Surikov would not want to be seen doing anything even remotely close to labour.

Fun Shoe

Falkine Vissitta Oges

Falkine is feeling increasingly uncomfortable about the amount of senior crew gathering to inspect the containers. There's a distinct chance that Lyte was lying about not telling them. Also, the humidity was not great in here.

"Really, there's no reason to break open these containers, they're all sealed and everything. It really demonstrates a lack of trust between ourselves and our valued trading partners, you know? Rogue Tradering is built on trust. I'll give it a look over nice and careful if it'll make you feel better?"

"You know how important it is to trust those around you, don't you Master Lyte?"
