I've always meant to buy this so I could play something like D&D on it...but I have no friends to play with.  Is the community open enough to just random people joining together? Or is it private servers?

The first video for it on steam is people playing like loving backgammon, which made me dismiss it out of hand. But then buddies got it and showed me that it can actually play good games, too, so it's been a loving blast. You probably have to explore the workshop to find the great stuff, although there's a good amount of DLC for it, too. There is a constant stream of people in chat looking for randos to play games with, but it seems heavy on Secret Hitler and Red Dragon Inn as far as that goes. Fun games I've played on there: Oregon Trail, CardBots, SmashUp, King of Tokyo, Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, Kingdom Death: Monster, Mario Kart, and doing a DnD campaign right now. Some of the mods have some pretty crazy scripting for automation/cool effects so you aren't sitting and manually fiddling for hours putting cards back in decks or whatever Like I said, the workshop has a lot on offer. And if you like that really cool dice rolling tower or whatever from a mod, you can import it into other gaming sessions, or save models/cards/utilities to your personal chest to use elsewhere. Probably my biggest complaint is that there are a bunch of quality of life commands that don't get explained well (for instance, hold both mouse keys to slide a single card under a deck), and consequently poo poo feels really time-consuming until you learn about/accidently discover stuff to make your life easier

I haven't done much server hopping since about a year ago (so take this worth a grain of salt), but there used to be a fair number of public games. Some games were especially popular, and would attract players without too much trouble. Typically they were games that were easy to teach, didn't take too Iong to complete and could support a lot of people, like Secret Hitler, Codenames, and Spyfall. Heavier and higher commitment games are usually better to play with a set group, but sometimes you can get lucky with who wanders into the room/sees your global chat, and it's possible to find and befriend players you click with in the bigger lobbies.
