Summer - Week 5

quote:

You discover a cache of supplies or resources.

Add a new Abundance.

Many of the soldiers that were staying at the village have deserted this week. They just left, just a few at first, then a handful, than most of them. They were whispering among themselves that they had to leave before the rest of the army comes. Most have left their weapons behind and we have taken them and hidden them in our homes to try and alleviate our fears.

Action - Start a project : We are afraid, it seems like the fighting is drawing closer to us and we need to prepare to weather this storm. We should fortify our village as best we can.

Tame the horses

The horses were trusting, they had probably been tamed before, and we coaxed them into the enclosure we have built. They will prove useful in the coming days.

Summer -- Week 5: Project Completion (Assemble the Statue)

After a great deal of work, the artists reveal their finished creation in the village square: a rearing pegasus constructed of scrap metal from the artillery piece, polished and rewelded. It is smaller than expected -- perhaps three feet high, although supplied with a generous plinth -- due to limitations of material; nonetheless, the artists seem proud to have produced something new.

Summer -- Week 6

Something goes foul and supplies are ruined. Add a new Scarcity.

Those of us with medical knowledge have been working to help the wounded soldiers, but our knowledge is incomplete, and we have been wasteful. Our supplies of bandages, pain-killing tonics, and disinfectants are running dangerously low. Something may have to be done soon, especially if fighting is coming. No obvious solutions present themselves, however; in the old days, we purchased such things, but the war makes that impossible. What are we to do?

Action -- Start a Discussion: What should we do about our dwindling medical supplies?

Project Completion (Preserve and Store Fish)

The only comfort of this week is that Felice's smokehouse is operational, and we are beginning to build up a stockpile of smoked fish for the colder months. It may be cold comfort, but food security is nonetheless always welcome.

Our appeal has been answered. Southlander nurses and medics on a humanitarian mission, in response to our struggles with the wounded. A relatively small number, but well-trained and determined. Truly, they are a blessing, an unexpected ray of sunshine through the grim, fearsome clouds of the present age.

Action -- Start a Project: The Southlander medics brought themselves and what supplies they could, but only through witnessing could they truly appreciate the scale of the problem. Undaunted, they seek to organise a logistical supply line to bring in much-needed medical provisions from their home territory.

They arrived during the night, carrying everything they could pack onto their boats. Our neighbors to the south were forced to flee their colony, the warships shelled the island mercilessly. No one knows for which side they are fighting. A lot of resources have been lost but just enough medicine was saved to suit our current needs, however in exchange we had to provide food for the newcomers.

Action - Start a project: Set up a camp for the refugees.

These people need somewhere to live but we do not want total strangers living in our village. We will show them to the cave of the penitents and help them to transport their possessions and some building materials there.

A project finishes early. Which one? Why?

We all work quickly, and the southern village refugees (those who were able to reach us, anyway) are strong and able. We finish the camp in the Cave of the Penitents in short order; it will be long work making it truly comfortable, but it is livable.

Action - Discover Something New:

During the work on the camp, Arno -- a teenage boy, one of the newly-arrived refugees -- wanders away from the group for an afternoon and returns claiming to have made an amazing discovery in the depths of the Cave of the Penitents. A few of us follow him through winding, clean-carved tunnels, until we emerge on an amazing sight: an open cavern with a deep, clear pool and the remnants of stonework. This must have been a place of refuge for the penitents, so many centuries ago. Perhaps it can be a comfort to us now.

The Top Brass have arrived in force. Rolling down the road, our military have deemed it necessary to take over the town as a headquarters: With the Flying Machine incursions to the north, the front lines have shifted, and they have decided to coordinate this section from here. They have commandeered the best houses, as well as almost all the empty ones for their men. They are attempting to exert strict controls over our town, and have sergeants out actively recruiting any they can, stopping just short of press-ganging. This is, of course, only a temporary measure for the duration of the present emergency.

Restlessness creates animosity and animosity leads to violence. Who gets hurt?

The military's occupation of our little village has riled up some among us. A lot of our younger and more reckless members have started holding meetings in the evening, discussing what to do about what they call the oppression by the army. Young and charismatic Valeria is once more at the heart of this youth movement, exhorting them to take action. One night they manage to get a hold of some of our weapons and pandemonium breaks loose. They assault the homes of the highest ranking officers and wound some of them before scattering and disappearing in the hills surrounding the village.

Action -- Start a Project: Even though they have grown extremely distrustful of us the army realizes what an advantage it would be to tap into the power network that we have found recently. They are sending some of their engineers along with some of us to try and figure something out.

Fall -- Week 4

A natural disaster strikes the area. What is it?

Choose one: You focus on getting everyone to safety. Remove an Abundance and a project fails.

The earthquake comes at midday, while the army and our local workers are hard at work on the eastern power systems. It starts from the east, collapsing one of the gondola towers and smashing the electrical works. The army commander snaps to duty, but to the surprise of our workers, he orders them away to safety -- and it is then that one of us remembers the Cave of the Penitents. At her word, the commander leads the soldiers and workers to the cave, in case the worst has happened.

The entrance to the Cave of the Penitents has collapsed, and the villagers and soldiers alike are rallied to dig out the refugees. We work as one, and blessedly, we find them all; some are injured, a few quite badly, but all are alive. We take them to the village and find them shelter where we can.

It is only that night, as a few of us drink with an army sergeant and toast our good fortune, that we realize: we are not afraid.

We cannot speak for the insurrectionists in the hills, and we are not free. On the morrow, there will surely be a return to the barked commands and toil. The war may yet come. But we have saved our most vulnerable, we and the army together. Perhaps there is hope for us yet.

Action - Start a Project: After the earthquake and the damage to the Cave of the Penitents, we must find new shelter for the refugees. If any of the Cave can be salvaged, we will begin there, but if what room we can make there is inadequate, we shall have to build some kind of shelter that will hold.

The damage to the Cave of Penitents was nowhere near as extensive as had been first feared: This wasn't the first earthquake they had experienced. Working together, soldier and local, even a handful of the dissidents pitched in, drew everyone together, made them more acutely aware of their common humanity.
