I was reading this article: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2017/apr/09/im-like-a-secret-assassin-poo-bear-on-writing-for-justin-bieber-skrillex-and-sam-smith

I saw this quote:

quote:

Its influence is inescapable now; in February 2015, when it was released by Jack Ü “with Justin Bieber”, it was utterly new. “It literally changed music,” says Bear. “It took a while, but it ended up catching on. It was played, oh my God, so much on the radio.”

Where R Ü Now paved the way for What Do You Mean?, the lead single off Purpose and co-written by Bieber, Poo Bear and just one other. It was an immediate hit – the first number-one of Bieber’s half-decade career – and introduced to the charts the Caribbean-influenced tropical house sound now so ubiquitous, even Ed Sheeran has dabbled in it. (“It’s like, ‘out of all the people, I would have thought you would be somebody to do something different,” says Bear, slightly accusatorially.)

And I wondered, how did it influence other songs? How would I even recognize that? For example, how would I recognize if "Ed Sheeran has dabbled in it"? What makes one genre distinct from other genres?

My knowledge of music is that I know what a beat is and I'm 90% sure I can recognize a "melody", even though I don't understand what a melody is. Is that all I need to fix?

You've got ears right? you use those to be like, 'this song sounds kind of like that other song'.

"To be quite frank, Platinum sucks at making games. Vanquish was terrible and Metal Gear Rising: Revengance was so boring it put me to sleep."

Ahem! In the Wikipedia entry on the artist in question there is a little section called "influenced by".

Scientific data, y'all!

Listen to a lot of music. Throw a bunch of songs from critically acclaimed albums from the past into a Spotify playlist and listen to them. As you add new stuff, you'll hear other things that sound like things that you've already listen to. Voila, you're an expert.

Do you want a hupyrolysege slcorpselong?
Look at the liner notes. If a track has a symbol after it like an asterisk or something, it will list all the influences underneath the lyrics.

I found that learning to play an instrument helped me to appreciate music on a completely different level. Not saying it's necessary OP but it's a fun distraction.

Then you can be like me earlier where I wrote what I thought was a cool riff then realised I'd accidentally figured out how to play Tom Sawyer

"Garbage! Trash! Offal! Debris! Come and get it! Nothing whole or undamaged! Crap, tripe, and useless piles of shit. You know you want it."
Just start at the beginning of all music and listen to everything chronologically up until now. that should give you a good idea
