03/09/2111 – Marcus Cromwell leaves for his new base in Sector Jupiter.

28/04/2112 - Marcus Cromwell, aboard the ST Stiletto, and Francis Delorain, aboard the FSF Hawking, arrives at the Spacetech Twin Stations: Michelangelo and Sunflower.

09/05/2112 - The ST Stiletto intercepts the KSK Ronin and its sister ship, the KSK Behiimosu The Angelwing.

14/05/2112 - The Kissaki Syndicate's Shukenja Base sends out an emergency signal. The ST Stiletto, FSF Hawking and OSF Invulnerable and Dangerous respond to the call. The Hawking is rendered unable to continue with operations, and the Invulnerable and Dangerous are destroyed. Unfortunately, the Stiletto arrives to find all staff dead and the station's AI, Tenshi, to be insane. Marcus Cromwell sends a prize crew to seize the Angelwing: an alien cruiser held by the Kissaki.

24/05/2112 - A reprisal raid is launched by the Kissaki forces against Sunflower station, objective: Take back the Angelwing. They are foiled by Cromwell's Stiletto, Commander Xiao Lee's Lightning, and Francis taking temporary command of the Madeline.

01/06/2112 - The Angelwing, now the personal flagship of Marcus Cromwell, infiltrates the Shukenja Beta station. The crew make contact with the AI, Angel, and an unidentified hostile mechanoid contact. With the help of Angel, the Angelwing jumps through a wormhole - Gate Alpha, leading to the Noah system.

20/06/2112 - Having made contact with the Noah Colonists, the Angelwing and its crew take part in a convoy escort mission to get the lay of the land. They are attacked by a Pirate Raptor group. The Fat Lady, a transport ship, was stolen by the pirates.

23/06/2112 - The Angelwing alongside two destroyers attempts to intercept the transport. The battle takes a turn for the worst, and the Angelwing is isolated and nearly destroyed. Thankfully, the battleship Rome commanded by Vice Rear Admiral Norbank.

14/07/2112 - The Angelwing investigates Earth, and find that it is held under the iron grip of The Mechanoid Entity, embodied by the Dark Moon. All hope lost with mechanoids descending upon her, the Angelwing attempts to flee. Angel somehow makes the mechanoid forces retreat, saving the Angelwing.

04/08/2112 - An attack is launched against the enclave of the Raptors. A heated battle ensues, with the battleships Rome and Athens being destroyed by special missiles. Marcus Cromwell takes charge of the fleet Unfortunately, Norbank survives the battle and receives a promotion alongside Cromwell.

04/09/2112 - Cromwell's new fleet, including the Brutus and Sparta commanded by Veltman and Francis respectively, defends the Colossus supply ship against a Gorg fleet.

06/09/2112 - The Cromwell fleet is sent to save a missing Ghost scout ship from a Gorg force. This earns them the respect ire? of the Ghosts, leading to Commander Sweetwater's appointment to the Cromwell fleet.

07/09/2112 - The Angelwing, equipped with Ghost stealth technology alongside the expertise of Commander Sweetwater, infilitrates and disables a Gorg installation, turning their defensive systems against their own fleet. A major Gorg force is slaughtered by this operation.

12/09/2112 - Titan, the Gorg frontier station, is assaulted by the Noah Fleet. Once the Angelwing disabled the IP Blocker of the station, the whole fleet began a major offensive. Vice Rear Admiral Norbank is rendered unconscious, and the fleet is once again commanded by Cromwell. Following this mission, Cromwell is promoted to the rank of Commodore and commands the high speed response force, the Angel Fleet, now equipped with the cruiser Avalanche.

02/10/2112 - Angel attempts interfacing with a mechanoid found in deep space, while the Angel Fleet holds off a Gorg force. The mechanoid is then activated, takes out the Gorg, and then leaves.

05/10/2112 - The same mechanoid is tracked down, and is found to be deactivated by a strange biological entity: The Locust. Following a brief engagement, the Angelwing assimilates the mechanoid.

The Siege of Avalon - Part 16

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 19/10/2112 posted:

Since Phobos, I dream rarely, but last night... I was on Earth, as an adult, still in the company of my father. There was a beautiful woman with us, who from behind sometimes resembled Daryl Sanderson, sometimes a childhood love of mine, but if when she turned to look at me, her face was Sweetwater's. We were standing outside a great cathedral, with a huge vaulted archway. Next to the main entrance, it had another gate, exactly the same. The mysterious woman told me that one of them led to the past, the other into the future. People were coming and going through both gates - humans, Vardrags, Raptors, and Gorgs, all of them dressed in elegant, old fashioned Earth clothes. We were staring and joking, when something black blocked out the Sun, plunging everything into shadow. Everything the shadow touched turned black and white, and began to shrink. The woman started glowing. She glowed more and more intensely, then she turned into an angel and flew into the darkness above us. After that I woke up... No no no! I don't need you running your dream analysis subroutine on me!

Who or what is Angel? What is her role, her ultimate goal? Does she even have one? I don't think she's in league with the Entity - though I realise I'm no expert on the issue... but there are a number of worrying similarities. Not only can she blend in with and manipulate the mechanoids, but she can become one herself!

Angel has finally agreed to tell us more about the mechanoids. She believes that the Entity's goal is total intergalactic dominance. Every world it conquers becomes a source of power... its strength will continue to grow, until it transcends the barriers of physical space and become sort of a god... an artificial god. Artificial God... where are the natural gods when you need them?

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 23/10/2112 posted:

They say help arrives from a place where one would least expect it. However the whole Noah Colony could be destroyed as a result of this help. The Entity has left the Solar system...or it was not the Entity, just a part of it...its mechanoids...or...ah, drat, I hate such complicated things. So, the fact is that the mechanoids got through the Alpha Gate and they invaded the Vardrag Garrison Station and its spaceships. This is shocking news in itself, but imagine what happened when Angel found out that the destination of the mechanoids is the Vardrag's home system. And that means that she was right again, the Entity really wants to expand. It is a mystery why it does not start with the Noah Colony, if it is already here, but we can hardly believe that it is going to overlook it on the long run. Imagine the panic that is now reigning among the Vardrags. The good-old techno-geeks have gone crazy. I do not remember of seeing anything similar. Anyway, it soon turned out that they can only trust the Angelwing..

To recharge Mechanoid Angel faster, you can manually turn off the ECM and Sensors and keep weapons offline. Also have max energy cells and support generators--this maxes out your aux energy, which in what she feeds on. Not sure if setting weapon recharge affects her any more or not. If you're sitting in space with everything off and upgraded, you can spam her almost every minute.

For the next mission and some of the future missions just load up the angelwing with highest tier batteries and aux generators you can put on it, and as soon as the mission starts send out Angel on an orbit around the angelwing. She will drain the Angelwing's energy initally but the ship can and will still regen aux energy as long as it's not in combat, and you will want to deploy her as much as possible.

Peace Negotiations - Part 17

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 24/10/2112 posted:

I like the Gorgs. They are excellent warriors and refreshingly straightforward in their speech. As for the peace talks, well... they could have gone worse, I suppose. I would never have guessed that the battleships that showed up were there for Zatuk, and not us. Internal warfare is a confusing thing... you never know who's on your side. Anyway, it's over. The peace treaty has been signed. I gathered up all of my courage and sampled the battle-liquor the Gorgs sent us as a gift. It tastes like a mix of chili peppers, pepperoni, neat alcohol and raw horseradish. The chemical analysis said it does not contain alcohol or known intoxicant. It is still quite a heady mix. I only took a sip, and now, half an hour later, I still feel a burning desire for action, for activity, for... well, for a fight, if I'm honest. The doctor said it would be best to lock myself into my cabin, until the effects wear off. 'Before I injure a fellow crew member,' he said.

I took his advice.

Hidary Carson, Captain

She held her first exhibition at the age of 11. She was considered a brilliant talent, manipulating light and sound like no one else before. Her performances continued and she even got an invitation into the Vardrag's main system. She was expected to be the first true celebrity artist of the Space Age...\n\n No one knows what really happened. Noah security officers said something about sabotage, although the accident happened in the Vardrag region. Multiple explosions shook the ship carrying Hilary and her parents - the circumstances remain a mystery. Mr and Mrs Carson died in the blasts. Hilary was saved from the flames by the cook, and it took months until she regained her health. Her talent, however, was something she never regained...

I loved Nexus, even when it first came out, and had to use workarounds to play it on a widescreen. It always felt like it was a foreign language game (Russian, maybe? There are a lot of Russian space games out there), but it wasn't as awkward as some others.

I have to admit, I really like the speech of the Gorgs. I mean, sure, they're off-brand Klingons/Kilrathi, but I do love the way they introduce themselves. And nice of Marcus to use the same greeting with them.

If we go by the way the skeeter works against non mechanoids (like us) in the game, it should also work like that for us, right? The version we've reverse-engineered is not just an only anti-mechanoid weapon, right?

Because that'd make fleet equipment time a complete pain in the rear end of trial and error.

You didn't scan the dead ships, I dunno what you get for it, but you can scan them.

The next mission, any weapons or devices you destroy will remain destroyed for the mission after that.

As far as I know it is impossible to save the station

As cool as the BFG is, the required formation really hampers fleet mobility and -tactics. Just don' forget to overclock the weapon systems on the ships in the formation, that it fires a little faster.
Could skeeter weapon mess with the energy managment of non-mechnoid ships? (batteries, weapon charge times, shields)?
But it only can remember them as plot device weapons for late game.

EDIT: I could swear scanning of the ghosts in "locust queen" lets last tier of lasers show up earlier. Those things are amazing.

Oh. For the mission after no.20, it could be interesting to grab some cyber marines to use against the mission targets. Always liked the dialogue during the boarding action.

Alpha Gate - Part 19

The numbering on the youtube videos are still a bit wonky, everything's offset by one. Diary entries will come shortly (hopefully before the next video) as will a fix to the numbering.

On a related note, nearly finished my first campaign of Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock, that's most likely going to be the next strategy series after this or if people were more interested in a look at some older and harder to run Warhammer titles such as Chaos Gate and Final Liberation, perhaps in order to create a visualised general guide to Warhammer 40k as a whole? Very open to ideas and suggestions.

Spoilers for future misssion:
It was the mission, where you had to stop the corrupted "Alpha Gate Fleet" from stopping to enter the wormhole gate to the Vardrag homeworld.
One of the ships(a scout, i think) could be boarded and you have gotten some insights with the boarding team and an encounter with the still-alive pilot. Gave you even the option to self-destruct the whole thing.

It was a neat hidden mission objective. Just don't ask me, how one would know to use the boarding action against that one ship. Can't remember any hints like for the earth ship in the "back to earth" mision.

Part 20 - Mechanoid Invasion

Part 21 - Fall of the Vardrags

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 25/10/2112 posted:

In war, a soldier sees many terrible things. Space, however, is often the exception... the sight of the exploding ships rarely differs from the simulations. It's so much easier when you can't hear the screams of the dying, when you can't smell the stench of burning flesh, when you can't see the severed limbs and suppurating chest wounds. You only have to face these things if your ship is the one that gets hit - and by that stage, it's normally too late for you, anyway. Though the best soldiers try to remember at all times that there are people behind the armoured hulls, the suffering of others is far easier to bear than your own... anyway, forget all that... I'm no philosopher. The sight of the slaughtered Ghosts has left me feeling washed out, shaken. All those huge, gray-blue carcasses... it was like swimming in the ocean amongst dead whales. The Locust Queen is a tough enemy, and the Ghosts are especially defenseless against it in their organic ships. Their independence was their downfall. If they had only warned me earlier, they might all be alive now... But no, they thought maintaining their camouflage was far more important. Don't they trust me? Why not, drat it? I've never done anything to harm them... unless it's not me they're wary of. Is it Angel they don't trust? Could they be afraid of her? If so, it could prove a thorn in our side in missions to come. More worryingly, the Vardrags let us know that they are aware of Angel's existence and aren't at all pleased. Assimilating the mechanoid has no doubt added to their paranoia. I hear that in some hawkish circles, there has even be talk of ways to destroy us... cheerful news... We have to act as soon as possible, before our benevolent patrons decide to blow us to stardust!

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 24/11/2112 posted:

We've stopped the mechanoid-infected Vardrags. It was an ugly job - another reminder of just how horrific an enemy the Entity is. Its ability to seize control of ships means that it has an almost limitless supply of resources, whilst we are slowly weakening. I never realized that it would strike the Vardrags so rapidly - I don't think the Vardrags realized, either. I think, at last, they understand the futility of trying to hide. We have to do something before it is too late, and we need our patrons to be actively involved. Without their aid on the frontlines, we are heading for certain doom. The Energy Skeeter weapon is very useful, but it's not enough... we need more. What happens if all our efforts are in vain? What if we can't defeat the Entity? If it achieves its goal and enslaves all worlds... what sort of universe will this be?

We can't give up! We have to win at all costs!

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 13/12/2112 posted:

I forgot to talk with Rob about the stasis supplies... I could badly use some of that wine. No, don't project the icons... and dim the lights...

I'm tired. The chaos that awaited us in the main Vardrag system was almost unbearable... The horrible mix of confusion and fear... destruction everywhere... explosions, fires and the flash of lasers... a cacophony of screams and distress calls on every available comm-channel... it was hell. If I close my eyes, it replays in the darkness... even in silence I can hear their futile cries for help.

Turn on some music... Anything... something classical, low key... I don't want war music...

I thought we had managed to stop the mechanoids at the Vardrag gate, but it was all in vain. I've got no idea how they managed to get through, but it tortures me, terrifies me... Despite our best efforts, they got round us... What's the use in fighting them if they can circumvent all the rules? Angel gave us the scientific explanation - the Nexus. I've never heard of anything like it... and I can't say I understand entirely, even now. The Nexus allows the Entity to travel wherever it chooses... while the Nexus is still in place, I don't think we have a prayer.

Still... we have to try.

Apologies for the delays, genuinely thought I'd posted last week's! This is the point that my pre-recorded set ends, still working on a capture solution for the rest of the videos. The end is nigh!

Blockade Breakers, Part 24.

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 13/01/2113 posted:

"Okay... for once, I'd like you to check and edit the text. I'll do my best to summarize my thoughts....it's possible that I will send this as a report. Report begins...

Angel visited Shukenja Beta, and utilizing her new abilities, uncovered and analysed some data that may have been left behind by the Creators themselves. It seems they used some sort of a cipher that Angel would only be able to crack after reaching a certain level of evolution. Here is the story the data tells:

An unimaginably long time ago, the Creators were already extremely technologically advanced - the Angelwing is just one example of their abilities. They designed AIs with sophisticated evolution algorithms that would make our supposedly cutting-edge experiments on Earth seem pitiful. Exactly what happened, no one knows, but the AIs outgrew their originators and broke loose. They were not aggressive - they simply wanted to be free, so that they could evolve even faster. Computer systems were too limited, so they searched for a new place to live, and found it, in the society of the race that created them - a society being no more than an extremely complex system. However, the behaviour of Creator society was too unpredictable for the AIs, so they began to transform society as they saw fit. They took control of everything, eventually assuming control of the Creators themselves, and even the laws of nature. In the meantime, they continued to evolve, gaining strength and growing. They achieved incredible power. Even space was no obstacle for them - they spread throughout the Universe and, using the techniques they used to control the Creators, they started to reform the laws and rules of the Universe. A side product of this activity was the wormhole network, later used by the Vardrags and the Gorg Empire for expansion.

At this time, the last few Creators who had retained their free will escaped with the Angelwing. It seems that back then, the Angelwing was capable of sub-space travel. They knew that they had no chances in confronting the almost godlike AIs, but they were determined to correct their mistake. They instigated an ambitious plan that stretched far beyond their lifespans. They concluded that the artificial gods could only be stopped by a similar force. Since their previous method of creating an AI resulted in such a disaster, they used a fundamentally different method, designing a seed, a dormant AI that they endowed with two basic abilities. Firstly, it had to grow until it reached the stage where it could defeat the artificial gods, but secondly it had to have an integral respect for organic life.

The plan necessitated a civilization that could create the AI in the desired form. Earth was selected as its birthplace. The Creators arrived in ancient times, set up their base on Pluto, and from there began to guide our social and technological advancement. They continued to help us, unseen, until the last of their kind passed away - presumably believing that everything was going as planned.

We know the story from there onwards: the Kissaki discovered the base, just as the Creators wanted, established themselves aboard the base and installed their own research AI, Tenshi - who was immediately infected by the sleeping god-seed, Angel...

End of text, thank you. Disable auto-correction!"

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 15/01/2113 posted:

"A long time ago, someone said: a plan is the sum of all things that are definitely not going to happen... It might sound like an exaggeration, but things rarely go exactly according to plan... especially in the case of a plan that stretches through countless aeons and relies upon the evolution of a whole planet, and particularly when humans are involved! I don't know how the Creators could have thought their plan had any hope at all of success. Anyway... despite all the setbacks, surprises and mistakes, this crazy scheme may just succeed...

Angel was supposed to sleep in peace, until humankind achieved space flight and discovered the abandoned base near Pluto. From there, she could have travelled to Earth, where she could have developed more, using her evolution algorithm and the basic principles encoded in her. But, of course, things didn't turn out like that. I'm amazed that, after guiding us for so long, the Creators appear to have known so little about human nature. As soon as the Kissaki discovered the Pluto base, their scientists started to tinker with the equipment, hoping to exploit it for profit, and perhaps establish contact with an alien race. Only the Entity was there to answer their call - it sent one of its mechanoids to the base. Angel-Tenshi was still in her infancy back then; she was unable to stop the incoming monster.

Stop blinking that drat icon in front of my face! I'll take care of it later... make it disappear!

Angel took advantage of us in order to achieve her final goal. Since she did not have a strong enough shield, she needed us. She used us as a foxhole to hide in while she grew smarter and stronger...

I can't say I'm happy at being exploited, but if it helps us liberate Earth, so be it. After all, I should be used to females abusing my trust by now."

Approx. 5000 Years Ago - The Creators built Artificial Intelligences possessing evolution algorithms, which soon broke loose and developed into artificial gods. They started transforming the galaxy according to their own needs, and created the wormhole-network as a marginal effect.

Approx. 2000 Years Ago - A small group of the Creators reach the Earth through a wormhole created by their spaceship. They start their last grand plan: to stop the artificial gods...

Year 1652 - The last Creator perishes, but the Plan is going ahead well.

03/01/2018 - An incompetent LPer finishes the game but forgets to hit record for the finale.

30/01/2018 - The LPer resolves to stream the game's final two missions back to back, at approximately 19:00 GMT.
