Gifts From on High

Welcome to another beautiful day on Fodasha, Novices!

Your mission today has been to investigate a report of a newly-discovered cavern or underground facility that may well be the the final resting place of the Ivarn Heist, an Angevin-era incident in which (as the legend goes) opportunistic enemies raided the Imperial cruiser Ivarn, making off with a Naval landing craft and its entire cargo, hiding it on Fodasha and ultimately evading retribution. While they may have been hoping for weapons or tech relics, they instead discovered their haul to be container upon container of processed and sorted skulls awaiting distribution to various manufacturing roles and respectful interments. Though details are sketchy, the Ivarn Heist is believed to have taken the remains of uncounted Imperial heroes and martyrs from all branches and services. Though insignificant in terms of the war effort at the time, the loss of so many unknown worthy skulls has remained something of an embarrassment for everyone involved. Recovering the skulls and the records of their deeds would be an important step towards safeguarding the history of this small corner of the Angevin Crusade and winning more than a little renown for the Midnight Star!

The site is several hundred kilometers from Saint Florenza's Rest, a fortunate coincidence that allowed you to respond so quickly and arrive in the morning of your second day of travel across cracked highway and dirt track. A small muddy pool sits in the shade of the tall cliff, fed by a slow leak of water down a mossy rock face. It's not much, but a reliable source of water on this blasted world could be priceless. At a glance you can see the remains of eroded rockcrete foundations buried in the stone and sand, indicating that there may have been something of import here many* years ago.

The small group of itinerants who notified the Midnight Star after discovering the suspected site loiter nearby, nervously awaiting instructions or permission to leave without being punished. The first thing they pointed out was what looked like any other patch of rocky cliffside, but which on closer inspection turned out to hide a narrow cleft in the rocks that disappears further underground, appearing too constricted to enter for now. According to the locals it definitely leads to a deeper chamber full of skulls, though.

On departing home base, the advice from your Sister Superior Medencia Morte was "Do not fall into ruin through haste. The knowledge of ages may be preserved indefinitely through neglectful isolation, or destroyed forever with a light touch of devotion." She was laid up in preparation for having her appendix removed, so it may or may not be relevant advice. On a more practical note, before leaving you were advised of a large sandstorm crawling across the landscape that might arrive in the next day or two, limiting vox contact and making travel difficult.

In addition to your normal equipment, you have been assigned a heavy-duty Cargo-8 transport, five demolition charges with det-cord and detonators, and a servitor equipped to slowly cut through rock or metal with an integrated lascutter. Barring any surprises, you should have everything you need to assess the site and perform initial exploration and recovery of artifacts. Preventing the careless destruction or theft of artifacts are high priorities, naturally.

With the coming day full of potential what will you focus on investigating or working on first? What do you think of this mission and Fodasha in general? Who did you nominate as your temporary squad commander, anyway?

*Going by Dark Heresy timeline, the Angevin Crusade started in 322.M39 and 'present day' is somewhere around the tail end of M41, making it about 2,500+ years prior.

November Dukovsky

"Stay with the vehicle and defend this position while we investigate. If you run, you shame yourselves in the Emperor's sight and will be judged appropriately by our Order." Nuke says as she hefts Heavy Stubber and tripod in one motion off of the roof of the transport cab. "I suggest we begin our search quickly sisters. We want to make as much progress as possible before the sandstorm hits." Nuke sets up her machinegun in some cover overwatching the approaches to the cavern.

As she looks down behind the barrel of her gun she thinks of this world. Apart from being under punishment on what was apparently a warp journey over to this world, her time on Fodasha has been quiet, too quiet. She prefers being engaged against an open enemy, not relic hunting.

But the assignment will allow her to prosecute heresy violently should she come across it. To that end, prior to departing she nominated Verity to be squad leader. The chirurgeon, though capable of leadership, should stay focused on her job. That said, if Verity needs to have an accident, Thallia can easily take over.

You ever do the chicken dance at a wake? That really bothers people.
Josephine

"Relax. We'll be inside if the storm hits. We can wait it out if we need to and dig the transport out later."

It'd be a bitch and a half, but yeah, it could be done. Or they could make the locals do it. They seemed nice enough. Josephine did her best to (quietly) reassure them as she and the other trainees go by. Her bubbly personality was usually good for a first meeting and maybe a few minutes into subsequent interactions. After that, she knew, her enthusiasm started to grate.

She checks her guns and starts to follow the gunner. For now, anyway. Her marksmanship scores have always indicated a preference for close quarters work.

After dismounting from the transport and stretching the stiffness of the long drive out of her back Verity approaches the nervous scavengers.

"Blessings of the Throne be upon you, citizens. You are to be commended for your diligence in reporting your find to the Order as swiftly as you did. Tell me, which of you made the initial discovery?

With the coming day full of potential what will you focus on investigating or working on first? What do you think of this mission and Fodasha in general? Who did you nominate as your temporary squad commander, anyway?

The first priority is to gain limited access to the chamber so we can assess the value of the site. We're highly unlikely to be disturbed by anyone out here, so security is less of an issue. As missions go it is one of the more wholesome, although truly valuable relics are unlikely to have been abandoned here any servant of the Emperor deserves to have their remains treated with respect. Fodasha is...quiet. I grew up surrounded by the hymns and chants of the faithful, and this planet with it's sparse population is a little unsettling.

Of course I should be squad commander. Dukovosky will make an excellent second, if she can contain her tendency to lapse into Catachan dialects.

Verity approaches the locals with a friendly air and lead with smiles instead of threats seems to set them at ease. The leader, one Yashi gives a brief history of his group and what they were doing here, before introducing you to his daughter, Taki. Taki seems to be torn between eagerness and respectful tone towards Verity, emmissary of the Emperor-on-Terra, but doesn't hold anything back as they explain. The other ten members of their expedition are also willing to add details as needed or offer another point of view.

Yashi
"Most fair Sister Verity, shall we have tea while we relate our tale?"

The group (more of an extended family plus friends) travels this route semi-regularly and stops for a few days to rest and gather water from the spring. With a proud showing of desert lore, Yashi explains that the water drips directly from the side of the cliff thanks to a layer of porous sandstone which extends for hundreds of kilometers. Water slowly accumulates and ever-so-slowly flows underground until it emerges from the cliff face, cold and completely pure.

"A scholar once told me that the water moves so slowly, it takes hundreds or thousands of years for it to emerge. If that is so, the water we drink today may have first fallen to the ground in the days of the great war that marks this world. I find that remarkable, myself."

Sandcrab (not present)

Their trade is primarily in the eggs of the Fodashan Sandcrab, a huge herbivorous bug that grows to the size of an autocarriage. Despite being strong and well-armoured, the Sandcrab is inordinately afraid of most things and flees instead of fighting. You've been advised to give them a wide berth just in case they might hit, or be hit by your vehicle. There's been some noise about getting some proper xenobiologists on-world to examine them more thoroughly, but such experts aren't quite readily available in the church, and the Mechanicus aren't what you would call helpful.

Yashi would prefer not to stay here too long, as the ever-cunning raiders tend to check in on spots such as this in the hopes of more easily finding prey. Also, the presumed tomb full of skulls is pretty spooky. The desert is full of baseless myths, and one of them turning out to be real is a bit much.

Taki
"When I grow up I want to join the Midnight Star and hit raiders and rescue lost-tech from monsters! But my father says I am needed with him to support the caravan so I'll do that I GUESS."

Taki was playing Hide From the Hunter with the other children and took refuge in a cluster of rocks at the bottom of the cliff. She discovered the passage further in, and in the best traditions of childhood followed it underground into an artificial tunnel. Inching along in the dark, her foot touched something that was definitely not a rock, so she grabbed it and ran outside with it.

"I even rescued this skull from the haunted tomb!"

It is indeed a skull, and not a particularly well preserved one at that. Sitting on the floor for untold ages hasn't treated it well, though a dry desert climate is perhaps the least harmful if you had to choose. While a loose skull isn't exactly earth-shaking in the Imperium, Yashi points out what looks like the remains of a serial code imprinted into the base of the skull, which he believed indicates it belongs to some sort of Imperial organisation. That, combined with the possibility of a much deeper underground complex (and many more such skulls) led him to send a rider to one of the Midnight Star's distant automated posts and pass on the news.

With an eye for combat, November and Josephina keep watch in case any monsters or heretics suddenly pour from underground. For the moment they don't and you are left admiring the windswept sands and rockcrete stumps. Based on the talk so far, if a child and an adult skull fit through the gaps, an adult woman just might squeeze through as well. That, or make it bigger via lascutter or explosives.

+20 Charm - 22 under 68, 5 DoS
+30 Inquiry - 37 under 78, 5 DoS

Verity charms the pants off the already-friendly people. They pretty much adore you and will tell you anything, and you can ask for more information or just chat away about sand or crabs for the rest of the day. Good thing you didn't have to beat it out of them.

As always, it's up to players to go poke at things so I dunno go get your sticky fingers on an old-looking rock or something.

Vilhelmina hops out of the Cargo 8 and breaks out he stablight, heading to the rockcrete formations. Sparing a brief glance at her shiny auger array, she begins examining the ruined, sand-blasted foundations.

"It can't hurt to do a preliminary examination of the structure. I'll start". For some reason, Vilhelmina is feeling slightly foggy. Maybe it was motion sickness from the long drive, but her head hurts, and she can't seem to draw on her lifelong education and experience in the trade of archeology. She's sure she'll feel better soon, and the skills will come flowing back to her. In the meantime, she decides she can compensate by just applying the basic principles of logic, and use what she can see and what she knows to divine some tidbits about this building's function.

"Hmmmm. They say this place dates back to the Crusade 2,500 years ago, and this was the hideout for thieves who robbed an ossuary ship. And judging by the layout of the foundations, and the narrow, descending entrance...."
Logic: 40; Success!

Vilhelmina thinks she'd trust Dukovsky to call the shots if things got hairy. She seems like she knows what she's doing. She also seems to be the most sane out of all her sisters. Or at least, she seems the most functionally crazy, herself included.

While Vilhelmina may have enthusiasm and intelligence, drawing conclusions about a wide area (how far do these ruins even extend?) can't really be done without surveying it on some level. That means lots of walking, squinting in the sun and deciding if that rock is actually rockcrete. Otherwise, you could be standing on top of a building but not know it for the thin layer of sand between you and it. This will take most of the day at least.

-10 Perception or +10 Navigate Surface to define the area you're working in and discern the key features that will determine your highly logical analysis. You can grab someone else to help you do this.

Away from the ears of the group for a moment Verity responds to Talia's concern: "At most they will be helping with some manual labor, carrying and sweeping. Any truly critical tasks will be left to trained personnel. And besides, they are more than happy to help." That none of her sisters are technically trained archeologists is not all that important compared to the need to secure finds against less devout scavengers.

Handling the skull with due reverence (and thanking Taki for taking such good care of it) Verity examines it for any of the identifying marks or Ecclesiarchical scrimshaw that would adorn the contents of an ossuary. If nothing matches her experience she will pass the skull to another sister for examination and storage.

She allows the child to show her the gap in the wall, and is doubtful her tall, broad shouldered frame will allow her such easy access.

"Sister Damocles, at your convenience could you direct the labor servitor to widen this hole?"

You ever do the chicken dance at a wake? That really bothers people.
Josephina

"Heh heh... phrasing..."

It's rapier wit like that which keeps Josephina in the penance details for long stretches of time. In the meantime she continues a patrol around the entrance. However the servitor is going to do its work, it'll be loud, that's for certain. If the sand crabs are attracted to the noise, there's going to be plenty of it for them. Best to keep and eye out for trouble. They might need a place to retreat and a passage just wide enough for the team would be perfect.

Nuke can do it with a Navigate Surface. Roll for me

Morning till Dusk

November and Vilhelmina work most of the day surveying the site, a tedious and exhausting task in the midday sun. They spend hours poking into the sand to discover hidden objects, guessing at the shape and layout of obliterated structures, and trying to discern the actual extent of the former base. November might be more preoccupied with more modern defensive concerns, but she still manages to figure out a broad perimeter which definitely encompasses the base. After collaborating on what they've seen and arguing over what it might mean, Vilhelmina is able to come to a few reasonable conclusions.

This base is essentially in the middle of nowhere, far from all other known military sites ancient and current, and doesn't seem to possess any strategic value in its location. It's too small to be a major supply dump and doesn't possess the huge defensive structures that would make it a real fortress (though they might possibly have been obliterated). Taken together, it seems like it was a relatively small, low-profile base with a staff capacity of several hundred, possibly intended for supplying long-range patrols. There are some large clear spaces inside the bounds that might be assembly grounds or landing pads.

The yellowed, dusty skull must hold secrets, so Verity carefully examines every aspect in search of identifying marks. It doesn't take too long before an etched alphanumeric code is discovered, and she is left to puzzle out the meaning of all those faded characters. Bureaucracy isn't exactly her strong suite, but something about it tickles a memory of earlier experiences. Of course, identifying skulls was a basic elective available to everyone in the Midnight Star, and Verity wasn't one to slouch away from such things by studying cogitator blessings or offensive driving. The markings can indicate a great many things - date of recovery, branch of service, crimes and sentences, notable deeds and commendations, and everything else needed to form an abbreviated history of the departed. This skull appears to be the mortal remains of a Ministorum adept, fallen in battle against xenos sometime in the early Angevin Crusade. There's more to it, but the rest of the code is simply incomprehensible going by memory.

After confirming the historical significance of the skull, Verity continues to entertain/detain Yashi and his group. While they don't particularly want to be here due to the spooky skull cave, they do trust the Sisters to act responsibly and handle anything that could possibly go wrong, whether that be murder servitors or ancient curses. Perhaps extra hands will come in useful? :iiam:

While the others are busy, Josephine and Thalia supervise the archaeology servitor, a typical cybernetically enhanced convict whose brain had been mostly replaced with far more loyal hardware. They strongly suspect this is actually just one of the servitors from the garage. Nonetheless, it carves away at the reddish stone blocking the passage, the two Sisters taking turns to swap out the lascutter power cells and put them on the Cargo-8's charger. It's slow work but the mindless drone dutifully burns away at the rockfall, ignoring the rock chips and sprays of hot sand that would make other workers complain about 'unsafe working conditions'. It's up to the Sisters to make sure it doesn't somehow kill itself, but accidents are unavoidable and it accrues a collection of burns and bruises from where rocks fell on it, or managed to burn itself on near-molten spoil. At the end of the day, the servitor stands over the remains of its enemies, wounded but triumphant.

With the obscuring rocks partially removed, there's a clear way into the underground. Now that you can get a closer look you can be sure this 'cave' is not a natural formation. Daylight is on the verge of slipping away, and everyone is weary from a long day of being around in the desert sun. Dive into adventure tonight or come back tomorrow?

Since this is two people minding a servitor working a somewhat hazardous job, it was an extended +10 Perception test, with the servitor taking a 1d10+1 hit whenever it failed. After four successes it was cleared without huge amounts of suffering. It makes it through the day at 6/10 Wounds, fixable with Tech-Use or Medicae.

Verity stares at a skull for a while and learns some things through Common Lore (Adeptus Ministorum). By sheer chance it was an Ecclesiarchy-person skull and she got 29 under 30. Wow!

November got a 50, sneaking under 53 on a +10 Navigate Surface (Perception). This is about reading the lay of the land so it used Perception, not Intelligence.
Vilhelmina's two degrees of success on Logic helps too!

Stop succeeding at every single thing pls

Josephine

Maybe it wasn't the most necessary use of her equipment, but the sheer amount of dust and rock flakes being kicked into the air by the heavy drilling made Josephine put on her rebreather and flight goggles. It was long and loud work but the drat servitor managed to pull it off with only a minor setback. But that's easily fixable in the morning. Right now it's starting to get dark, and guard duty takes a lot out of you, even if it only looks like you're standing around or walking a perimeter. Constant vigilance puts a real strain on the mind and body.

When the last heap of rocks tumble away she moves in while the servitor clears away the debris, shotgun at the ready just in case. It's too dark to see anything in what little light remains in the day.

"Hey, Tali! Bring the light. We're in."

Just want to confirm that the entrance isn't full of tech zombies or something. I say we start fresh in the morning.

A contract signed by a minor is not binding!
Verity

By the time the passage is clear Verity is a little on edge with excitement. While she can't clearly make out the individual who this skull belonged to they were clearly a noteworthy person. If this really is the spoils of the Ivarn Heist then this dusty unofficial exile will have been more than worth it. Knowing the fall of night will make it difficult to proceed with a search but bursting with curiosity puts her in a difficult position. She returns to the Cargo-8 and stores the prize in a locker, padded with old robes to protect the aged bones. Then she warms up the onboard vox, attempting to make a transmission back to the convent both to provide a status update and to request forecast information on the sandstorm.

Does the Cargo-8 have an onboard vox-caster and are we in range? If not disregard that.

Returning to the entrance Verity activates her glow-globe.

"Well, sisters. Shall we take a look inside?"

The truck does indeed have a long range Vox, and in clear weather on mostly flat ground, calling home is perfectly possible.

Aside from advisement not to let the locals touch anything, you're also warned that the oncoming sandstorm is forecast to be far more severe than expected. It's expected to blot out communications before dawn tomorrow, and overtake your position in the afternoon. While it's not expected to flay the flesh from your bones, it's not going to be pleasant by any stretch and any vulnerable equipment should be covered up. In your case this means 'try not to leave the truck running, and clean out the air filters'.

Unless anyone has objections you'll be heading underground immediately.

A boy and his dog.
Thalia

Thalia considers the matter for a moment, looking concernedly at the damage to the labour servitor. They had exactly one of the things, and surgery in a sandstorm wasn't the easiest thing to do. "I agree we should investigate while we still can and try to get started on the work before we have to huddle in the truck to hide from the storm. That way we can still contact base before the storm fucks the vox if we need to. I'd like to repair the servitor before we go, but if its a choice between servitor maintenance and finding out whether we're in the right area, I'd rather start with the second."
