A boy and his dog.
You walk across the sand dune, stopping in the last covered position before where standard imperial doctrine dictates a screamer perimeter should be set up. Except for the few who left to ensure the king of Ravy does not side with the imperials over your employer, the whole team is there, not to mention the five dozen locals accompanying you. Listening for a moment, you sigh in relief. The information you got from your three captive sisters had been accurate. The imperial landing force had not deviated from the norm and no mechanical voice screeches your presence into the starry pre-industrial sky. Nodding to the commanders of the units of native witch-warrior's seconded to your command by the king of Nad'halan, you wait as each dimoirites tears open a warp rift. Three decades of twenty warriors each, the natives follow you through the portals looted bolters in hand.

The sentries guarding the compound wall die in seconds, none of them having the time to raise an alarm. Dozens of the adepta sororitas and other ecclesiarchy personnel asleep in their bunks fare no better when you torch their barracks, tossing grenades through every opening in the prefab buildings and setting fire to the rest. Still, despite the devastating success of your initial assault the battle is far from over. You divide your forces in three, few of you with one local unit in each group. The group with your heaviest weapons proceed with razing the barracks, engaging the surviving Imperial forces as they wake up, while your remaining professional soldiers lead another group to secure the temple in your rear. Nobody wants to get hit in the back of the head by an Imperial battle-priest. The last group protects the heretek and the sorceress while they disable the communications array to prevent your enemy from alerting their ship in orbit.

Initially, the resistance is weak and you make rapid progress towards your objectives. However, after the initial shock is over and the element of surprise spent, your enemy rallies. Heavy casualties or not, nobody really expected the Sisters of Battle to yield easily. Despite most of the camp's defenders wielding whatever happened to be at hand and a mere handful wearing armour, trained fanatics with advanced weaponry cut into the ranks of your allies. Regrettable, but unsurprising and ultimately acceptable.

Then you find out three very important things in very close succession. First: hallucinogens can be debilitating, but using them on people with flamers will very quickly make things very warm, as the Imperial temple collapses into a pyre burying one of you together with the a group of drugged nuns. Two: a bronze age society is ill-prepared for dealing with flashbangs. While the tribal-world warrior burns, the renegade drill-instructor can't help but watch as his native charges are cut down by bolter fire. Three: a modern weapon maintained with bronze-age equipment is not to be trusted. Still recovering from the flashbang, the instructor nearly burns his arm off when his weapon jams. The seconds spent reaching for his side-arm buy him the time to discover Imperial chainswords really do taste exactly like they smell.

As the flames spread, your leader duels the canoness. A space marine can hold his own, even against the Imperium's finest. The enemy leaders fall one by one at your feet, sacred relics and silk banners trampled in the blood and sand. But the corpse-god's fanatics are not entirely wrong. Their Emperor really does protect them. The heretic stumbles once, falling next to his foes. The dying canoness whispers a litany of blood-gargled high Gothic, and the space marine's first mis-step proves his last as a sanctified thunder-hammer caves in his skull.

With most of the camp on fire and half of both sides of the conflict dead, it starts raining blood. The unexpected is soon explained when you realize the unit sent for the communications system is pinned down by a heavy combat servitor, forcing the tech-specialist and and witch without combat training to fight for themselves. The remaining sisters converge on the communications array, and the now-virus-laden heretek can do nothing but watch as a witch-hunter catches her prey. Your witch speaks her last curse suspended mid-air on an Imperial spear, and the veil between reality and the warp shatters.

A massive and imposing creature looms over the battlefield with the rain of blood parting around him like a sea around an island, while smaller daemons struggle to make their way through the rift created by the deaths of dozens of psykers and the desperate curse of a devotee of Tzeentch. While reality knits itself back together with commendable promptness, a number of daemons makes it through and rushes into the battlefield cutting down the few survivors without regard to allegiance.

Still reeling a bit from the very realistic sight, sound, and smell of your corpses being torn apart on the field of a battle lost, you shake your head. King Apastatauk is the first to speak. "So... I assume you'll want to revise this plan?" He looks at your daemonic ally reflected off the pool of water. "I don't know what those things were, but if your prediction is accurate, I would sooner not have them rampage through my city." He looks at you with fatherly concern. "And of course, I'd prefer if as many of you as possible came back alive." You get the feeling his words are sincere. Despite having only known him for weeks, the ritual performed after your arrival bound you together as if family the same as every citizen of Nad'halan.

Sassy Fuegobutt, a daemonic servant of Slaanesh and the self-appointed spirit guide of your heretek, smiles at you from the psy-active reflecting pool. "Oh come on, that's just what would happen if you went in with the big guy's half-assed plan!" Somehow, a pool of water twerks at you. "Your plan needs way more rear end if you're going to come back alive. But I believe in you!"

What kind of game is this?
A PbP Warhammer 40k game using a system that doesn't make me want to have sexual relations with a cheese grater to mask the crunch-pain. We're using the Atomic Robo rules instead of Black Crusade because they fit our purpose well, we are not using the comic book setting.

So this is a Warhammer 40k setting? Set in that hosed up universe?
Yes. For more detail on exactly where you are, refer to previous events described here. You are of course welcome to use the various Warhammer 40k RPG books for information and inspiration, we're just not using their mechanics.

So this is Black Crusade but with lighter mechanics? We're servants of Chaos? Not faithful Imperial citizens?
Exactly! Servants of the Dark Gods, atheist renegades, apostates, anything that doesn't actively contradict major pieces of the 40k setting are ok. You don't need to be a follower of the chaos gods, but you do need some reason to explain why you're willing to work with others who are.

So we're the baddies? Does this mean I should do my best Saw impression?
In-game actions don't need to reflect real world morals, but don't make your fellow players uncomfortable. Standard forum rules apply. Do not break them. Fade to black sooner rather than later.

I'm confused, are we continuing an old game? The last game ended mid-combat, what happened?
We're more or less continuing from where we left off, with one exception. The final combat encounter of the previous game was now all along a simulation. Your planning meeting before your big event. Read this post for details of your current situation.

Does this mean only people who were in the last game are welcome?
No. Of course I expect most of the interest in this to come from those people, but others are welcome to retroactively have been there all along.

Where can I call you names for not using a system that requires pages of house rules and 5 different books to be functional?
#acolyte on synirc.

Why are you playing on a dead gay comedy forum and talking about it in IRC instead of using Discord?
Because I'm deeply and personally disappointed and disgusted by your lack of standards or good taste.

I'm scared of new things and want someone to hold my hand.
#acolyte on synirc.

I had an incredibly stupid idea, can I do it?
There are no stupid ideas, only stupid people.

Yes but can I have [ridiculous amount of power here]?
Highly likely!

What about the perils of the warp rules? How will I ever grow a crown of 1d1000 nipples if I don't have random mutation mechanics?
Trust me.

Character creation:
Again, we're using Atomic Robo for the crunchy bits! Do not make a character using Black Crusade because your nerd senses went off early and you couldn't hold out long enough to finish reading the drat OP. I will laugh at you. I will get others to laugh at you. Use the weird character creation rules.

Basic Psyker mode costs 3 points (like science), and includes 2 skills: Will, and one psychic discipline of your choice (make a custom skill). You are of course welcome to make custom modes for whatever you want, including more complex psyker modes appropriate to your character.

Mega stunts do not require weird modes, you're allowed to make take them if they fit your concept. Other rules apply as usual.

http://i.imgur.com/hi3ctdu.mp4

Once upon a time they were a tech-serf on an Adeptus Mechanicus-owned agri world, toiling away in the motor yards maintaining the endless arrays of trucks, combines and other mechanical aids. That all changed when they opened an email from a mysterious sender. Having not properly maintained their firewalls and clicking through all the links without caution, Patchouli was infested with a dizzying and debilitating amount of malware, which they then forwarded on to the planetary central server.

Triumphantly emerging from the ruins of that world with stacks of stolen cybernetics and a completely new worldview, Patchouli ended up on Q'sal and fell in with a band of misfits who were to go attack or save another planet or something. Providing tech support on a feudal desert world was both very easy and very hard, but the most interesting part so far was when Patchouli consumed massive amounts of psychoactive space peyote and met a daemonette who is totally trustworthy. This also led to growing a huge crab claw and other daemonette parts which is kind of cool?

Patchouli believes that life is meant to be enjoyed. If people are happy worshipping Khorne or the Emperor, that's nice, but they could probably be more happy under the friendly guidance of Slaanesh or the nearest available representative.

"Apart from revising the order of battle to ensure we don't split our forces, perhaps we also need to account for the fact that Champion Tloloc has disappeared. With him goes a major force multiplier. That said, it isn't all bad. Terminator Champions are such brutes after all. They overestimate their own capability, however mighty it may be. A diffused attack on three points was a fragile attack plan to begin with."

Matias Solomon

A former Space Marine of the Doom Eagles chapter, Matias Solomon served in the Jericho Reach as a 3rd Company Tactical Marine who went MIA after the company’s strike cruiser was ambushed and boarded by Red Corsairs. Matias is believed by the Doom Eagles to be among those killed by Fabius Bile’s dark experiments on the captured members of Sergeant Tarikus’s squad. Unbeknownst to them, Matias Solomon was left for dead and broke free of his confines. He escaped the asteroid base via a stolen shuttle and struck a deal with a visiting Chaos Warband to join them in exchange for not blowing him out of the sky.

He stayed with them for a time and though he had many chances to flee the Vortex for Imperial space, he doubted he would be found free of corruption and probably would be killed. So he plies his trade as a Chosen Chaos Space Marine, losing himself in the infinite battles of the Long War. He no longer concerns himself with righteousness and honor. He only cares about new weapons and the battlegrounds that call for their use.

Actual Story: Matias Solomon is a personality ripped from some poor Doom Eagles mind after he was purchased from the Red Corsairs and run through “The Gauntlet”. Jacked into an archeotech VR construct, his dreams of life and escape are carefully edited and imprinted onto new Alpha Legion recruits minds before being sent out on their first missions. That way they have real memories to draw on to reinforce the lies they tell as easily as breathing.

This newly minted Hydrafucker has one simple job: be a source amongst the Q’Sallian sorceror-technocrats and stay quiet until it's time to be recalled for debriefing and further indoctrination. As of now he has a serial number and a nickname: Astartes Alpha M38.52,452 “Maximilian”. And Max only cares about the mission and his initiate company. For now the mission calls for him to play the part of a Chosen Chaos Space Marine and that he will do nicely.

Lucille

"We don't have to become strong by hurting the weak."

The most un-Chaos sentiment ever expressed? Perhaps. And yet Lucille is exactly the sort of person who keeps the Ordo Hereticus awake at night. After all, what does the Imperium rely on to save mankind from the taint of Chaos? Oppression, ignorance, desperation. Destroying the supremacy of the Golden Throne is an crucial step in freeing mankind from the shackles of hate and cruelty. Yes, that will require killing, and suffering, and death. Yes, Chaos inspires its own brand of brutality and madness. But insane as it sounds, Lucille is driven by an unquenchable faith in the essential goodness of the human spirit. She firmly believes that the hidebound Imperium is beyond salvation, that a Chaos society does not have to be an evil one, and that through charity, self-sacrifice and love for her fellow man, she can redeem humanity from its self-destructive course and bring about one united galaxy of relative peace, under Chaos.

It's the kind of doomed, naive mission to make a Chaos Warlord chuckle to himself for a second before trying to kill her. But Lucille is much more than mortal now. The Nurgle-spawned hemorrhagic fever that rages through her veins leaves her pale, slight, and prone to bloody coughing fits. It also allows her to shrug off and regenerate from blows that would destroy a tank. She barely feels pain and seems to suffer no effect from blood loss, no matter how much her illness taxes her. Every time the world responds to her pleas for mercy and understanding by trying to kill her, she just gets up and tries again.

Of course, you don't get anywhere in Chaos without being able to kill. As much as it pains her, some people just have to die. Some people don't understand anything but force; it's not their fault, but they're just too broken to fix, and they have to be stopped before they hurt others. And indeed, Lucille has a decidedly unnatural talent for killing. A lifetime ago, she was nothing but an Administratum worker who opened the wrong shipping crate. Maybe she was just clumsy, cutting herself on its razor-sharp surface when she recoiled away from the Chaos symbols. Or maybe, as she remembers, the armor really did twitch towards her and bite. Either way, when she regained consciousness, she was ankle-deep in innocent corpses and wearing the bony-red carapace that she can no longer remove. Now killing comes natural, even if the desire doesn't. Nor is she the only unwilling occupant of the armor. Cursed by Nurgle for some colossal failure, the daemon that empowers the armor is so thoroughly bound that it can only briefly control its wearer, with great effort.

But poor Lucille either can't or won't recognize that she's not alone in her body. She doesn't have the slightest idea why she suffers blackouts in which she commits acts of violence and cruelty, often against the very people she tries to save. Perhaps that's why she's become so obsessed with curing Chaos of its cruelty: penance, or a vain hope that teaching others to stop killing and hurting each other will somehow stop her darker half from doing that too. Maybe she's become some sick incarnation of Nurgle's "kindness" without realizing it, a walking source of suffering that insists it's here to help. Or maybe she's just a good person, in spite of it all. That's why she's here, trying to save the people of this tiny backwater world from falling under Imperial control. Because they're free, and they're happy, and at least with Chaos they'll have a slim chance of going uncrushed.

pre:
Concept: Friendly Assassin with a Daemon Passenger

Physical Stress: [][][][][]
Mental Stress: [][]

Modes:

Good: Bloodborne "Blessings" (8p): Combat, Nurglite +1, Physique, Provoke, Will

Aspect: Wretched but Powerful
+Disturbingly vital and strong, despite a sickly appearance. Often underestimated by dumber opponents
and feared by the ones smart enough to recognize what she is.
-Creeping illness can slow her down at inopportune times. She underestimates her injuries
and sometimes aggravates the damage as a result.

Fair: Assassin by Necessity (12p): Athletics, Burglary, Combat, Deceive, Notice +1, Stealth +1

Aspect: Soft-Hearted Killer
+Naturally talented at killing unaware or distracted targets quickly and quietly.
-Refuses to harm someone who has done her or her friends a good turn. Has a conscience and is easily guilted
by others as a result. Considers killing outside of self-defense or defending others to be a last resort.

Average: Obliviously Cheerful (10p): Deceive, Empathy, Provoke, Rapport, Will

Aspect: Everything Will Be Fine!
+Puts others at ease with relentless optimism. Rarely feels or acknowledges fear or despair.
-Easily manipulated by even a thin guise of friendliness. Tends to miss obvious signs of
impending betrayal. Always thinks the best of people.

Omega Aspect: There is no Lucille, only Zuul! (Signature Aspect)
+Can be briefly possessed by the daemon in her armor. It's deadly, terrifying, and very intelligent.
-Completely unaware she's possessed and incapable of remembering her actions while possessed.
The daemon is spiteful and bitter about its confinement in the armor; it delights in killing
and sowing chaos, especially when that's not a good idea for its wearer.

Weird Skills:

Nurglite
Overcome the effects of physical injuries, extreme environments, and poison or disease.
Create an Advantage by sickening enemies in close proximity with the unnatural diseases and poisons that flow through her veins.
Defend against physical non-blessed/warp damage by simply ignoring it, fighting on unaffected by hideous injuries.
Defend against enemy attempts to create toxin, fear, or pain-based advantages against you.

Stunts: (3 benefits)

Trusty Long-Las: Weapon(2) at range, +1 to Notice when looking down the scope.
I Don't Want to Fight You: +2 to Create Advantage with Rapport when trying to de-escalate a situation.
Signature Aspect (There Is No Lucille, Only Zuul!)

Mega Stunts: (5 benefits)

Possessed Carapace Armor
Function: Daemonic Armor
Flaw: Has a Hateful Mind of its Own
1. Thick Plating: Armor (4) against physical damage.
2. Daemonic Strength: Absolute strength (Physique), but at a cost.
3. Spiky Bits: Weapon (2), +1 to Combat in hand-to-hand.

Crimson Fever: +1 to Defend or Create Advantage with Nurglite when you have taken physical stress in the current scene.

Skills: (Trained/Focused/Specialized)

+5:
+4: Combat, Nurglite, Provoke, Will
+3: Physique, Deceive, Notice, Stealth
+2: Athletics, Burglary
+1: Empathy, Rapport

You ever do the chicken dance at a wake? That really bothers people.
Brego

The Astartes known as Brego began his life anew only relatively recently. He was called a techmarine early on, a disciple of the Iron Warriors siege legion. The training of the Legion alongside the disciples of the Martian Machine Cult gave him mastery over machines of war. At Istvaan, his maintenance kept the guns firing upon his former battle-brothers as the drop pods landed and disgorged Imperial troops into the lethal crossfire.

But it wasn't until fairly recently, to a nigh-immortal mutant anyway, that he found his path to ascension. Warp sorcery blended with tech heresy brought him to the Obliterator Cult, creatures of warp-infused flesh that shifted and twisted into the walking artillery monsters that have so plagued the Imperium since they took their first steps on the road to demonhood. It took decades of dealing, researching, and failed experiment after failed experiment but Brego was able to get a sample of the Obliterator virus. More research followed, years of it, until the only test left was to infect himself.

The infection is slow. Brego's failsafes have kept his mind his own instead of the mindless servitors that the Mutilators and Obliterators become in time. But he must carefully maintain the spread. Too little attention and it will spread and overtake him, too much and it will die off and leave his body in irreversible shock, unable to tolerate the expansion of warp-machinery through his body. He has come to this planet as both a favor to his newest patron and to speak with their sorcerers. Theoretically, it's possible to rewire a brain to open itself to the Warp; to create an artificial psyker. Perhaps this would allow him greater control over the virus. Perhaps it will destroy him.

Concept: Tinker, Traitor, Soldier, Smith

Mode: All Hail the New Fleshmetal
Science +3
(Notice +2, Science, Will)

Mode: Millennia Among the Iron Warriors
Action +2
(Athletics +1, Combat, Physique, Provoke, Vehicles)

Mode: Black Market Arms Dealer
Intrigue +1
(Burglary, Contacts, Deceive, Stealth)

Omega: "More machine, now, than man."

Stunts:

Warp Artificer:
Spend Fate to bind a demon or warp-essence into a "Science" creation

Alpha Strike:
Mark a Physical Stress to unload all weapons, may not use a ranged Weapon next turn while recovering.

Cold, Metal Heart:
+2 To Will defending against Empathy or Rapport

Assuming Direct Control:
+2 to Vehicles or Combat with machines or weaponry that have an interface; damage to interfaced machines may cause Mental or even Physical Stress

Fleshmetal Body:
Function: Pinnacle of Heretek Warp-Weaponry
Flaw: Creeping Infection
1. Walking Tank: Armour rating 4 against physical damage.
2. Auto-senses: +2 to create advantage using Notice when wearing the entire suit.
3. Powered Exoskeleton: +2 to overcome with Physique when using strength.
4. Shift: Weapon 4; may spend a Fate to add a damaging Aspect to the attack for this attack.

It's tough being cute.

What do you mean this isn't what she looks like?

Samira is out of rehab!

It was a long time until she could regain even basic motor function. Being plasma welded to a floor isn't fun, even if it sends your senses wild (but maybe that had more to do with the elephantine dosage of painkillers). After that, it was sensitivity. Just being able to feel things again was exhilarating after a long time of feeling nothing. Most of her body had been replaced, too much of it was unrepairable because of the plasma. She looked entirely different, and that was scary and exciting. It was like she was a major company that had been slightly updated for marketing purposes (new look, same great taste!). Not many people had seen this face before. Nobody could know what to expect, unlike with her old body. It was time to start a new adventure, experience new things, and re-experience the old things with fresh senses. A life that was filled with ecstasy, dulled by the passage of time, only to be renewed.

So assuming they exist in this timeline this is what I could do with Hostia:

- Use Empathy to create an Advantage by leading them into revealing something, or maybe throw a party they're invited to with Rapport to raise the roof.
- if it succeeds it creates a situational aspect or reveals a hidden personal one which can be exploited.
- or maybe mentally Stress them and give them a Consequence which can be exploited.

- invoke as many aspects as possible when going for the kill such as Overcome with Rapport to sweet talk them into helping.

Do I understand these mechanics correctly?

Also could I use Athletics to win a conversation?

Make sure your Stress levels are right!!!

You should get at most 3 extra boxes on top of your default 2/2, a 1 from Fair and a 2 from Good.

Having both Mental and Physical skills in a mode doesn't mean you add to both Physical and Mental, it means you choose which one gets the bonus.
