The original thread was locked a year ago, and has never been resurrected, for some weird reason. So I'm going to.

Rivals of Aether is a platform fighter, much like Super Smash Bros. You have a health meter that reflects how far you get knocked by attacks, and the goal is to kill your opponent through ring-outs.

Superficially it looks similar, but when you play it you'll realize it's quite different.
-There are no shields or grabs, instead there's a parry system.
-There are no ledges either... you have to walljump and use more types of moves to recover to the stage.
-Characters tend to rely much more on their special moves, which are more exotic.

ROA is designed to be a competitive game from the outset. Wavedashing from Melee is in the game for instance (but easier to do). The combo system is more deliberate. Characters' attacks are carefully lined up to synergize with each other, and the balance is constantly updated. Overall this game is easier to pick up and play than Melee, but harder to master and with a deeper combo game than say, Smash 4. It's a nice comfy in between, that is fast and fun, and rewards repeat play, without murdering the fingers too much.

I think it's time to dust this off, as this game's been in :siren:FULL RELEASE:siren: for a while and has built up a bigger community. Goons should have a place to talk about it. Full release brought a lot of fun new things to the game in addition to the stuff early access folks got to play with:

-A single player mode
-An endless 'Abyss' mode
-More stages
-New music for the title screens and character selects
-Better controller support and online features, like online 2v2, Elo Rankings, and leaderboards for single player achievements.

In addition to the original 8 cast, there are 3 new characters now, available for DLC.

Ori: "Hey I know that game, wait what gender is Ori again"?

There will be 3 more characters added either by the end of this year or early next year.
