I took one film class at a community college and the guy would just constantly come back to this film. Everything would be compared to it. It was his golden standard for everything, he'd talk about how other movies did the same thing, or why certain elements worked in House Party but didn't work in whatever other movie we were looking at. I think he might've worked on it in a really minor role, but it was the only time he ever truly worked in film. Or maybe he was just a fan.

From what I learned in that class, in the twentieth century there were three truly influential, groundbreaking, medium-defining films: 1) Battleship Potemkin. 2) Citizen Kane 3) House Party

^hahaha edit: I've seen Citizen Kane at least 5 times, and, to me, it's one of those films whose details -- the unique structure (film is told in flashbacks), the bravura direction, the cinematography, etc -- all strike me as admirable in and of themselves but the film as a whole leaves me feeling cold. On the other hand, the film that's often regarded as its peer in greatness/style -- Hitchock's Vertigo -- amazed me from my first viewing of it. mr_gay_sex_fan fucked around with this message at 12:48 on Feb 11, 2018 |
