I have always been fascinated by Deus Ex-style robotic prostheses, the ones which actually replace a limb functionally and are nerve/brain controlled. How come this technology always seems just over the horizon and what are its near-future prospects?

One cyborg, as requested: https://www.instagram.com/aannggeellll/ She has a twitter as well, where she explains some of the mechanics of how things work. I can't find the link just now, but there's a guy who has a prosthetic hand that's actually designed to look like Adam Jensen's hand.

Yeah I always see stuff like that but it's hard to get a sense of the current state of the tech or where it's going.

Last I checked, we've just barely begun to understand the inner workings of the nervous system. Though Elon Musk has just set up a company dedicated to brain-machine interfaces, with the goal of letting all your cyberpunk fantasies come to life: https://waitbutwhy.com/2017/04/neuralink.html https://www.neuralink.com/
