The 2018 MSU codec comparison is out with H.264, H.265, VP9, and AV1. Mr.Radar fucked around with this message at 22:36 on Apr 17, 2018 |

u know what, i'm going to crosspost this here because i have opinions this is the original comparison between the itunes hd version and the blu-ray version i tried recreating the look in the blu-ray screenshot using the itunes screenshot: even using surface blur is an improvement

in alice in wonderland they decided that gray should be purple for some reason, and colors in general should be super saturated, but other than that, the blu-ray version looks way better than with sword in the stone. i don't mind the noise reduction that much, tbh, since they seem to have been able to retain the details in the linework and the painted background. the left image is apparently a 35mm film scan, the right image is a screenshot from the blu-ray

Disney likes to "restore" their Blu Ray releases but they give the job to the colorblind intern who watched a YouTubetutorial on after effects.

digital noise reduction for stuff shot on film needs to die already also film grain isn’t noise
|
# ? May 9, 2018 15:29 |

film grain doesn’t compress because it is essentially random static. the right thing to do is to take it out and replace it with temporal blue noise dither.

nah, just use a decent bitrate. especially for something like bluray, which is supposed to be a high end format, where there is plenty of space and none of the issues with streaming exist.

maybe the long con is to wait until enough nerds get mad about it and then release special editions with a grimy film transfer but in 8K
