Hey y'all I have a weird situation going on here - I am looking at a Lexus is300 ( Vin is JTHBD192830072946), and the NICB vincheck states that while it is NOT stolen, it has TWO separate instances of being "stripped/stolen" in the salvage vehicle records (in 05 and 06). It was most recently sold by a dealer to a private party. When I pull the vehicle history report (from vehiclehistory, which is free) it shows neither of those theft records and then also confirms "nicb status: not stolen". The seller claims to have a clean title and a Carfax that shows a single theft in 2005. What gives? Was this stolen? Was it stolen and then recovered TWICE?! Does having a theft/stripped nicb record generally total a car? This poo poo is all very confusing to me... I don't really have any experience with stolen vehicles! Anyone have some insight into this? Edit: Mods feel free to shorten that thread title, looks like I hosed it up

My only experience with this has been on the buying side at salvage auctions. If the car was recovered after insurance paid for it, and the owners had already replaced it, it would go through the salvage auction often with a salvage title. Especially if it was stripped and the price of replacement parts were high enough to total it out. Ever priced a full interior from the factory? It also used to be a common scam for a shady shop to steal a car, strip the interior and wheels, and put them in storage. Then they'd wait a month and abandon it somewhere conspicuous so it got picked up. It'd go through the salvage auction and the shop would buy the car and put the parts back on it and sell it. Kind of like laundering money. But just like any other "easy" crime, it became a pattern that was super easy to spot and is much less common now. This car may have gone through either of those processes. It may have been in a lovely neighborhood where it was easily stolen for a while. Does the NICB status mean that it has never been stolen or just that it is not currently listed as stolen? I'm guessing the latter. With those records the car probably should be decently discounted. Thanks for confirming my gut feelings, I think I will pass on this one unless it looks immaculate and he's willing to give me a decent discount.

I checked this car out with my insurance and they do tell me that its vin "clean" aka not stolen or salvage but the carfax shows it was indeed stolen, then insurance paid out, then it was recovered and then sold at auction so i have no clue. Guy wants 5k for it and you can see where the door was forced open so I'm not about to pay that.
