Ahem. So, uh, now that that's over with...

Punchbeef, still up for cooking together sometime?

(And Spicer, I SUPPOSE I've got an air mattress you could use... just for a little while though!)

"Many thanks for your kindness, Councilor Boyardima. Let me just take off this costume and wash off the makeup - it feels like I've been wearing it for months."

As soon as Boyardima had made the offer, however, Spicer felt a sensation he thought he would be bereft of for some time - the familiar tingle of Chronal displacement. Reaching into his pocket when no-one was looking, he found new artifacts of his past...or of his future?

"Looks like this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship..."

Hello, yes! Is being very good day for posting, no?
The tension left Eat's shoulders as the dragon collapsed into slumber. He had faith in his cooking, yes, but there'd been a moment there where he'd still been worried--Tex knew his creation well, after all. But he'd done it. He'd proven himself.

"Cook the impossible! Sate the insatiable! THAT is the ESSENCE... of STRONG COOKING!!!!!" Eat shouted, as he wound up and punched Tex square in the slack-mouthed jaw, blasting the dark culinarian back into the wall where he slumped unconscious. Sure, maybe the more poetic way to go about it would have involved cooking, but sometimes a guy just really needed to be punched, and this was one of those times.

He graciously accepted the offered rabbit's foot, looping its tassel around his belt. "It's good to see you again, Mari. Especially with you not being possessed anymore. But... if you're ever threatened like that again... just tell me. Or Boyardima. Or Spicer. Or any of us here. There's no need to go through what you did. We're HERE for you." That settled, he turned to his comrades in that last fight.

"Spicer... THANK YOU for your SACRIFICE. I know it must be ROUGH being UNABLE to RETURN TO YOUR OWN TIME, but you're WELCOME to CRASH ON MY COUCH IF YOU NEED TO. And Boyardima... COUNCILOR Boyardima... I know things between us got HEATED towards the end there, but... I'd LOVE TO DO SO. Maybe we can GET THAT SHOW RUNNING AFTER ALL. With US in the business, Fieri won't just be stuck on DAYTIME COOKING SHOWS... he'll be stuck on DAYTIME COOKING SHOWS WITH BAD RATINGS."

Eat gave one last bow to the Council. The future of Strong Cooking was looking bright. Sure, there was going to be a horrifying demon incursion at some unspecified point in the future... but it was the prospect of future challenges that really inspired culinary greatness. That day was going to come, andd he was going to face it with the mightiest dish yet. And until then... he had a freshly-minted councilor to catch up on.

What more could you really ask for?

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Calculating Dish Scores

Ingredients had eight stats. Each stat ranged from 1 to 6 naturally. Every stat had a minimum of 1 point, there were no negative stats. Ingredients got additional points to stats based on their gold cost. So, something with a price of four got four additional points. Something with a cost of twenty got twenty additional points.

Cooking methods had a unique modifier for every ingredient stat. Modifiers were formatted (For Example) as:

Sweet : +2X
Bitter : -2X
Umami : +4X

Before ingredient stats could be modified, chef stats were added. So if a chef had +2 to sweet and +2 to bitter and they were cooking an ingredient with the stats listed below

Sweet: 3
Bitter: 3
Umami: 3

Then the math involved would look like

Sweet: (3+2) + ((3+2)×2) =15
Bitter: (3+2) - ((3+2)×2) = - 5
Umami: 3 + (3×4) = 15

This was done for all eight stats of every ingredient used in a dish to derive the values of the ingredient after being cooked with the method selected.

All the processed ingredient stats were then averaged together. All of the ingredient stats except those of the Star Ingredient. This was designed to keep low ingredient total dishes competitive with high ingredient total dishes. So, for example

Star Ingredient:
Sweet : 16
Bitter : 8
Umami : 9

Not Star Ingredient:
Sweet : 14
Bitter : 4
Umami : 20

Not Star Ingredient:
Sweet: 2
Bitter : -10
Umami : -4

Not Star Ingredient:
Sweet : 8
Bitter: - 5
Umami: -4

The math for deriving a Dish's final stats would look like

Sweet: ((14+2+8)/3)+16 =18.666 (19)
Bitter: ((4-10-5)/3)+8 = -3.666 (-3)
Umami: ((20-4-4)/3)+9 = 13 (13)

Positive numbers were rounded up. Negative numbers were rounded down. Whole numbers were, of course, left alone.

Once this math was finished, we applied the ×2 After Cooking chef attribute. If it was applied to a positive number, we doubled it. If it was applied to a negative number, we reduced that to zero.

Sweet: 19 (×2) = 28

Or

Bitter -3 (×2) = 0

Let's assume the chef in question had an ×2 to Umami

Sweet: 19
Bitter: -3
Umami: 13(×2)= 26

These final stats were then added together to produce a base dish score.

19-3+26= 42

Once we had a base dish score, we took the highest scoring ingredient stat from the previous list and checked if it was a favored ingredient stat of any of the judges. Each judge had three favored ingredient scores and awarded 10 points if the dishes highest ingredient score matched. If a chef had a tie for their highest scoring ingredient, both were treated as the highest and the chef was eligible for double the judge points.

In the above example, the chef's highest ingredient score was Umami. If two chefs that round favored Umami his score looked like:

42 + 10 + 10 = 62.

We then checked flavor principles. Each player was assigned 3 flavor principles (cooking styles, basically) at the beginning of the game. These were automatically applied to all dishes those chefs produced. Additionally, the cooking methods all had two unique flavor principles which they applied to a dish if the Star Ingredient was cooked with that method. So every final dish had five flavor principles (3 from the chef and 2 from the cooking method selected for the star ingredient). Every judge had four favored flavor principles which they awarded 10 points for matching. Meaning it was possible (but unlikely) to win 40 from a judge for matching all of his/her flavor principles.

Let's say that the chef in the example match two from the first judge, one from the second judge and none from the third judge.

62 + 20 + 10 + 0 = 92.

Then we applied the affect of mastery. Every point of Mastery applied 10 points to the final dish score. So a chef with 4 mastery received + 40.

92 + 40 = 132

Finally, if a chef used a summon in that round, they were awarded 5 points for every fifteen they earned with their dish. This roughly meant that summons added one third of your final score back to you dish.

132 / 15 = 8.8

8 × 5 = 40

132 + 40 = 172

And voila. We have derived a final dish score of 172.

... It was a fairly labor intensive process...

Blessed Ingredient

Blessed Ingredient got +2 to every stat. This meant that stats which were modified negatively ended up much worse, while stats that were modified positively ended up much better. Cooking modifiers in general were more positive than negative so this almost always produced higher dish scores.

Not Blessed
Sweet: 3
Bitter: 1
Umami: 6

Blessed
Sweet: 5
Bitter: 3
Umami: 8

Good cooking method:
Sweet: +2X = 15
Bitter -2X = -3
Umami: +4x = 40

Bad cooking method:
Sweet: +2X = 15
Bitter +4X = 15
Umami: -2X = -8

The first produced a final score of 52. The second only 22. In this way, blessed ingredient could produce fantasticly high scores or results that were only average, based solely on cooking method.

Failed Cooking Methods

Every ingredient cooked had a chance of failing. We rolled a 100 dice online and if the result was between 1 and 10 the method failed. Failed methods had their positive modifiers cut in half and the negative modifiers increased by one.

Successful cook
Sweet: +2×
Bitter: +4×
Umami: -2x

Unsuccessful cook
Sweet: +1×
Bitter: +2×
Umami: -3x

Epilogue's coming in two parts. Here's what's kinda happened to everyone else...

Frying Cookerman & Home Ec 3rd Period

While neither cook won the tournament, the publicity of Home Ec propelled him and his partner Frying Cookerman into stardom. They published recipe books, starred in cooking shows - and guested in some others - and became the darlings of the media. Seven years later rumors circulated that their partnership was a farce. People believed that Home Ec was the better chef than Cookerman, and while the two played it off, it eventually got to the latter. It’s speculated that the two are going their separate ways.

ThrmalImmrsionCirculatorMastr

Upon his elimination the great guru ThrmalImmrsionCirculatorMastr rededicated himself to the art of Sous Vide and the other more esoteric and modern arts of cuisine. Some believe that one day this mind would return if there would be another tournament. But for now, people are content to watch him attain the mastery he strives for.

One day at a time…

Marinade2Win

After the end of the tournament, Mari had some trouble getting back to the Fairy Realm. Some of the Councillors tried to help, but it seemed that something had happened when she was possessed. The path was blocked to her.

In the meantime, Mari runs a food truck, offering her unique blend of Fairy cuisine and her experience in Kitchen Stadium. While there are many who remember Scariface and her attempts to undermine all Cuisine as we knew it, there were more who were charmed by her whimsy and sanguinity. Her food truck is a modest success, though her future is uncertain in this new Culinary era.

CHAIRMAN KAGA

People were upset that the great KAGA had lost and didn’t take his rightful place. Some foolish few think it may have been for the best. It seemed clear that he was meant for bigger and better things. One day KAGA would take his experience, his savvy, and his propensity for raw food, and use them to make something that would succeed Kitchen Stadium; perhaps even succeed the Council of Chefs.

Weener Batter

Weener Batter went on to publish new books and write an autobiography that sold really well in the Flavor Town and Pop Cuisine markets. And while the Chef’s reputation was in shambles, financially Weener had been rolling in it since the end of the tournament. While Johnny Garlic was still at large, Weener maintained that he never spoke to Johnny, nor any of the flavor demons. For now, people believe that.

Next year, Weener plans to run his own reality show.

Prawn Po’Boy

Nobody knows what happened to this luminary chef after his elimination. Chefs took a look into what notes he left behind. There wasn’t much of an indication to what happened that caused his sudden leave, but Chefs discovered extensive culinary notes and theories. If nothing else, it made Prawn’s elimination all the more jarring and tragic. In another time, perhaps he would’ve been to the final three. Maybe even the next Councillor. But these findings are just speculation.

Perhaps next time… if there needs to be a new tournament... Prawn Po’Boy may return. People suspect a great reckoning if this may happen.

Mystery Chef X

After leaving Kitchen Stadium, the Mystery Chef seemed to have vanished from reality. Not even historical records know who she is or if she even existed. Nor are people sure what motivated the Mystery Chef into quitting. Some say that Guy, fearing the end tried to scare off the Mystery Chef. Or that perhaps she went with the Chairman to realize something greater than Kitchen Stadium. Who knows?

The Chicret Ingredient

Since Chicret’s shocking elimination and discovery, the Chef went into hiding. To this day, nobody - not even the new Council - have any trace of Chicret. Some believe that Johnny Garlic - now at large since Guy’s defeat -got to Chic, promising power and twisting Chic’s skills and taste buds. The only clue to Chic’s whereabouts exists in some red book with a peculiar language and pictures. The councilors take turns trying to discern the book’s contents, but the progress is a snail’s pace.

Liquid Carmelization

The phenomenon known as Liquid Caramelization vanished just as suddenly as he/she appeared. Critics, councilors, and a large number of viewers were left with ideas of how cuisine should be: sleek, modern, and deconstructive. They all look to the future of food with a mindful and appreciative palate of where it came from. From there, the Farm-to-Table movement really kicked off.

Stay tuned for the fates of the Final Three.

A poster to surpass Bifauxnen!
A cold winter finally thawed, revealing the bounty of a healthy kingdom. In the forests succulent berries sprouted, in the plains hearty vegetables flourished. All which grew did so earnestly, eagerly, as a well loved garden. It was a happy time, a time of celebration. The Council hosted an annual festival, the spring equinox, a celebration of hearth and home. This year it was more important than many years past. Not only was this feast to commemorate their newest Councilor, it was to rejoice in the vanquishing of food’s greatest enemy. The Demon Guy Fieri was no more and cuisine was a more wholesome place without him.

The people gathered, of course. Throngs of good spirited passersby from all walks of life filled the cobble streets of the capital. But amongst the busy thoroughfares and the smell of sweet roasts a twinkle of magic could be felt. Not only from the joviality of the public. But from the Magicians in their midst.

From between two rosy-faced merchants exchanging cinnamon rolls for strawberry tarts, Spicer ducked his way casually through the crowd, resplendent in the navy blue star dotted robes of his order. A young scribe followed behind him with a much more hurried disposition. “But Magister, the records room! I really ought to be attending the recipes! Theres an unprecedented influx of equinox dishes this year and they have to be catalogued and added to the Library.” Spicer smiled wryly to himself and waved the thought away. “The dishes will wait, the celebration will not. This, this is the history we catalogue Miles. It can’t be recorded in it’s full glory from a desk in the Library. You have to see it! Smell it! Live in it!” Miles grimaced, “Yes Magister but … But … It’s just much more lively here than-“

Sniper reached into a barker’s stand and extracted a paper bowl full of cool, pink sherbert garnished liberally with fresh colorful fruits. He passed the merchant a gold coin and a smile before handing the confection to his servant. “Live a little Miles. It’s a time of celebration.” Miles stared at the treat with a scientist’s eye before sampling a bite. His eyes lit up, elated, and he quickly took out a scroll and quill, scratching manic notes between bites of sherbert.

The pair walked in this manor for some time before Sniper found what he was looking for. Heard might be more accurate. From the din of the crowd one voice soared above all others. “Coconut shell is a POWERFUL ENCASEMENT meant to SHIELD the DELICIOUS TREASURES hidden INSIDE!! The meat of the COCONUT is REMARKABLY NUTRITIOUS! HOWEVER!!! It is ONLY the SECOND MOST DESIRABLE TREASURE contained within this ADAMATIUM HUSK!!” Sniper’s smile spread to his whole face and with merry bouncing steps he raced forward to a cozy covered outcropping with quite an audience assembled in front of it.

“ANY NOVICE can SHATTER the coconut’s SHIELD! But this INDELICATE APPROACH wastes the precious COCONUT MILK hidden inside. WITHOUT THAT CONCONUT MILK, WE WILL [b]NEVER[b] MAKE COCONUT NECTAAAAARRRRR!!!” As if to demonstrate the mountain of a man squeezed a coconut in one palm, which popped like a large grape spilling it’s precious juice everywhere. The crowd applauded.

“To harvest the PRECIOUS COCONUT MILK we will require MORE than BRUTE FORCE!! We need BRUTE FORCE APPLIED WITH DISCIPLINE!!” Eat Punchbeef lightly chucked a coconut at one of the young men standing behind him. The lad caught it and stumbled backwards with the force. “INITIATES, you are tasked with PERFORATING these coconuts IN SUCH A MANNER as to ENSURE THEY DON’T SHATTER!! Only TWO HOLES will be necessary to RELEASE the DELICIOUS MILK CONTAINED INSIDE! Consequently, you will only NEED TWO FINGERS!!” Eat held up a peace sign as his students faces grew pale. The gigantic man clapped and it resounded through the audience like thunder as the young monks began to struggle with their coconuts. A passerby in the audience turned to Sniper and said “Unbelievable right? No one can puncture a coconut with their bare hands.” Sniper smiled. “If those kids are studying at Eat’s Dojo, they’d better learn fast.”

While the initiates applied their strength to the coconut, Sniper moved to the front of the crowd. “REMEMBER!! STRENGTH!! The COCONUT may be powerful, but YOU are a CHEF!! You MUST become MORE POWERFUL than ANY INGREDIENT!!” Sniper made his way through the crowd to the very front, quite a few spectators recognizing him and ceding their place with a deferential “Master Magister”. Sniper nodded cordially to each of them until he was directly behind his old friend.

“It can’t be done!” One of Eat’s students shouted in desperation. “I need a hammer! A chisel! A knife! Something!” Eat’s eyes narrowed as his arms crossed over his massive chest. “ANY CHEF worth his SALT can PUNTCURE the rind of this FEEBLE NUT!” He said with a note of finality. The student threw the coconut to the ground. “You’re the only Chef in the world who can break these with your hands!” From the crowd behind Punchbeef, a familiar voice sounded out.

“I’ve met thirteen who were up to the task.”

Eat spun in place with the weight and force of a charging bull. And when he saw Spicer he shouted in surprise and excitement, swiping the diminutive chef off the ground and above the crowd. [b]”SPICER!!! STUDENTS, you are in for A TREAT!!! This is MY GOOD FRIEND!! WE FOUGHT THE DEMON TOGETHER all those YEARS ago!” From the crowd, miles grew pale holding his sherbet and staring at his master held above the bustling throngs. Spicer just laughed. As Eat settled Spicer back to the ground he pointed aggressively at the rebellious students, with enough force to create a small sonic bomb that pushed the boy’s hair back. “YOU say no chef BESIDES MYSELF can OVERCOME the coconut! WELL OBSERVE STUDENT!”

Eat tossed Spicer a coconut. Spicer stared at it blankly for a moment. “Oh. Oh yes. Well. This will be .. Far too easy. Umm…” Spicer looked up from the coconut to the students of Eat’s Dojo, all of them now staring at him expectantly. “… Miles!” the coconut flew to the wiry scribe who caught it with a level of excitement reserved for catching a badger of a terrible illness. “Right to the front Miles!” Spicer called. “Show these fine lads what we’ve taught you at the Library.”

“M-M-Master Magist-I don’t … It’s not-“

“Good! That’s the spirit Miles! Come up and show them!”

As the scribe shuffled in front of the crowd Spicer reached to pat Eat on a shoulder blade and said “Take a walk with me. There’s another chef we should find before the day is out.” Eat grinned broadly and clapped another round of thunder. “STUDENTS! Remain ON TASK! I WILL return SHORTLY!” The pair walked back into the crowd, quickly parting in front of them. And in their wake, Eat’s students formed a circle around the quivering Miles, watching with much anticipation as he struggled feebly against the coconut husk.
