I stumbled on this woodblock print at the flea market today for a couple bucks. It was pretty nicely framed and it is kitschy so we picked it up. 20 bucks so whatever. My wife speaks Chinese and was able to get a little out of it but not much. Something something man fixing car. Anyone able to figure out what this is? It might be a common print, I just don't know what to search for. Frame looks like it is from the 50s/60s. Also, this is on the bottom right, cut off for some reason in first pic:

I can't read this style of handwriting but based on the text at the bottom right, it's no. 15 of volume 2 in a series of books titled "Nihon fūzoku zue" (Genre Paintings of Japan), which were published in 1914. You can see an entry for these books in the Smithsonian's collection here: http://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?q=record_ID%3Afsg_FSC-GR-780.918.1-12&repo=DPLA You can also see this particular print if you go to page 10 of the National Diet Library's digitized version of this book here: http://dl.ndl.go.jp/info:ndljp/pid/1266515?itemId=info%3Andljp%2Fpid%2F1266515&__lang=en

no pubes yet sorry posted:Wow, way more than I expected to hear. Pretty cool! A little more research: Apparently by Moronobu: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hishikawa_Moronobu And the original print was in: https://www.mfa.org/collections/object/wakoku-shoshoku-ezukushi-collection-of-pictures-of-various-occupations-in-japan-482332 The internet is goddamn incredible. Anyway, I don't know anything about this particular type of art. It does look like it is a page from a book (not a modern reproduction). Does it have any more value than the 20 dollars and a cool conversation? (i.e. should I re-frame it)

I vaguely recall hearing about "grass style script" for Japanese characters on the internet. http://cameronjcampbell.name/Tier2/Japanese_calligraphy/Japanese_calligraphy_styles/Japanese_calligraphy_styles.htm Good luck getting it translated.

Huh. I'm not incredibly knowledgeable of Japanese to read this, but I can read some of the characters because of a former ~*anime*~ phase.. When I looked at this, I could tell it was about early 1900's, but I had not heard of grass style script before, I was thinking to myself "Wow, is that REALLY bad handwriting?" but now I see it's cursive. Thanks for posting about it, it's lovely. I hope you can find someone to get it both translated and appraised!

I have a couple of framed pieces with this grass style writing too. No idea what it says, it looks like a battle is going on.

Yeah you're not going to get a lot out of the script even from a Japanese person except guesses due to early 1900s cursive unless they specialize in old literature/ukiyoe.
