Company of Heroes 2, a WWII based RTS, and also one of the best RTS games of all times, is having a free giveaway this weekend. Anyone who downloads the base game during this period will have access to the soviet and east german campaigns and multiplayer armies forever. The British, US, and West German(OKW) DLCs are also on sale for 75%.

The game is similar to Starcraft in pace, however it focuses less on mechanically clicking your opponent to death, and instead implements a more thoughtful cover system. Careful positioning wins fights instead of sheer APM. Unit preservation is a must as infantry squads are able to quickly retreat from the frontlines and reinforce at half price, all while keeping veterancy bonuses that make them more effective fighters. Damaged vehicles can be repaired by your tech units, allowing them to tank the brunt of your opponents damage for no manpower loss. The macro side of things is also streamlined. Instead of fidgeting with resource collectors, players instead receive manpower at a set rate that is taxed proportionate to population. The map you compete over is dotted with territory points that, once captured, can give you fuel for your late game armor, ammo for weapon upgrades, artillery strikes, and mines or victory points that slowly tick down until the game ends.

I know many of you used to play, or still might be playing. While the community seems to have dwindled over the past few years, the giveaway has attracted a lot of interest. The player count was at 150,000 on Thursday, and is still hovering around 30,000. Big numbers considering the record from the original release date was around 20,000 simultaneous players. There is a lot of speculation that SEGA is preparing to announce another game in the series, so now might be a good time to return, or experience the game for the first time.

Sweet thanks for the heads up. Played CoH 1 for like 4 years straight and loved it, never got into coh2 after the beta though. The steam player counts always seemed pretty solid so I guess it’s time to give it another go.
