"Patience, young grasshopper."

Dearest Friends & Lovers. Do you remember a simpler time, when gaming felt more "pure", more "true" and less full of DLC? Did you watch that bit in Stranger Things with the arcade machines and feel a rush of nostalgia for Dig-Dug? Or are you a millennial who feels nostalgic about an age you never got to experience, but tell your college roommate you know all about to justify the Super Metroid t-shirt you bought because Samus is a cool character in Smash Bros? (You're entitled to an entire generation you missed, because you're that loving cool :imunfunny:)

But what do we mean by Retro?

Time is a cruel and subjective beast, and I would say that Retro is anything up to and including the sixth generation of consoles (Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, and the sweetest of all... Dreamcast :iia:). There are going to be some of us who remember the noise of a cassette tape loading in a Commodore 64, and there will be also some of us who don't know what a cassette tape is. Retro is a blanket term, that we can wrap ourselves up in, get nice and warm with a hot mug of cocoa, and talk about how playing the original Halo for the first time made us feel awesome.

And if you think Halo is "not retro" then prepare to feel old - it came out in 2001. People born the year it came out can now vote. (Yes, time is cruel. Games are a sweet distraction from cradle to grave. Don't think about it too much :keke:).

Why are we talking about Retro?

When you realise that games like Smash Bros sell loads of copies - how do Nintendo do this? Because the characters are awesome and people love them. It's a great fighting game, it's an awesome soundtrack but the thing that really sells it is the characters. We love the original characters in these games. And you can say what you want about old triangle-boobs Lara Croft but she had more soul than this current one. At least you could recognise the original one from her silhouette. You can recognise Sonic, Link, Mario and Pac-Man from their silhouettes as well. You cannot recognise generic military man from Call Of Duty 6 in quite the same way.

So what happens in this thread?

All sorts of things can happen in this thread. Is there a good arcade in your town? That's cool, share it here. Have you recently picked up one of the mini-consoles and are (re)discovering a classic? This is the place to talk about it. Has this triggered a memory so that you'll go get your old NES or Sega Mega-Drive/Genesis out of the basement? Awesome! Share about it here. Do you have any photos of you with an awful moustache playing Donkey Kong? Please reference them here but keep them so you children can use them during your eulogy. Even though you're gone, that painful memory will live on.

We live in a weird world. Big companies will continue to package up our nostalgia and ship it back to us in different ways. (Look at the fantastic RE2 Remake, Shadow of the Colossus, Nintendo's business strategy for the last 20 years). Let's pay homage to the retro days, when the hardware was big and clunky, you had to blow the dust out of your "Lost Vikings" cartridge to get it working, and graphics were worse - so games made up for it with quality design. :words:

CAPTAIN WORD SALAD

OFF MY MEDS AGAIN PLEASE DON'T USE BIG WORDS

UNNECESSARY LINE BREAK
I'm not sure why we need a brand new retro thread unless you want one that is more about games than the near nonstop hardware sperging both the current general and computer retro threads have. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3577352 the computer one because I made it linked here. We also have retro fps and rpg threads and a romhack/translation thread.

Plus when that Crpg book project gets a physical release if my Ultima 1 and Dungeon Hack reviews are still in it I can call myself PUBLISHED RETROGAME AUTHOR when I need smug points. (Which has already annoyed goons on discord in spite of me using it as a joke. poo poo my author bio in it is me mocking myself. The editor asked me if I was sure. Of course I am.)

I did buy some retro poo poo this week though: I dont actually own a Colecovision but I like having legit and complete as financially possible games I would like to play on just about any system. Consider all games and all systems except for creepy anime porn poo poo I say. Even genres I hate and barely consider games like Visual Novels and QTE FMV and Point n Click Adventure have a couple titles I love. (Like Quest for Glory VGA, Sega CD Jurassic Park, Time Gal, Until Dawn, and the Telltale Walking Deads.)
