DCAB Artillery before Psykers, and make sure we have the specialists supporting the assault troops before they go forward.

CDAB This is trench war and foreign to us. No doubt Vallonite steel can carry the day but if they have any tanks or static gun emplacements we're going to have problems. Their resolve must be broken first.

DCAB Hopefully, the intense artillery barrage will give time for the Psykers and whatnot to get in the front trenches, where they can take a moment to interface with the troops. Rifles can then shoot any fleeing enemies/reinforcements.

Artillery, mental and iron-based Warvane I. Krust eyes the line warily, a vein poking out over his blind eyes. “I wiLL.. SENse them, my lord.” he finally gibbers, throwing his dark mental forces into the warp beyond. As he does, suddenly a slight tear in the nature of reality vacuums up all sound! The roar of machine guns, screams of the dying and gas-struck and thunderous roar of shells touching down.. Gone - then they reappear, twice! The warp echoes quickly fade, but the effects are horrifying to those who hear them. Hopefully any trauma is applied equally towards us and the enemy! Eventually, Krust starts screaming, psychic lightning flowing from his mouth and eyes - the bolts remain under his control, and streak into the enemy trenches! The rebels cry in terror, black forces tearing their bodies limb from limb even as it electrocutes their nervous systems. Host coordination working well for once, his outbursts coincide with PDF and Vallonite artillery timetables, and HE-Frag from modern-pattern mortars and Mandrake-borne Toxx cannonballs pepper their fortifications. In the fog and chaos of war, the exact effects are unknown, but the suppressive effect should be great. Close Order, Commissars and Priests Krust isn’t the only specialist moving up, and each assault party is assigned a Commissar Cadets and a Confessor or their initiate. The steely-eyed cadets are a mixed blessing: Indoctrinated in the Imperial boarding schools since a young age, they are nearly completely fearless, and will obey any order without hesitation. Their fanatical demeanour often leads to friction with their guardsman charges, but their example in combat is valued whereever it is seen. Less so with the Confessors, who mainly inspire the men through a fervent belief in the Father Church, Sabbatical-Thorian, and through that, a fierce and furious desire to destroy the enemy in close combat! The artillery, which frankly could be said to hit “Danger Close”, tears through the forward emplacements, recently vacated by your line - and the order to attack is given! The Valhallan Saps are opened up, and your men rush in. In the far trenches, riflemen creep up, taking shots at visible enemies with their Crowenson repeaters, hopefully delaying reinforcements. Blood and Steel Spearheaded by valient cadets wielding ornate Vallonite cutlasses and grim assault troopers spraying their autopistols at the foe, the assault parties take the forward trenches. Casualties are light, and - now playing to their strengths, your soldiers crush the enemy in melee! Aftermath Expertly harassed by the heavy cav, who until now have been chomping at the bit for something to do, the enemy attack collapses completely. The riders are reaching the end of their supply tether, and you consider reining them in. Prisoners are being processed, and the fallen counted. You receive a stream of orders, some from Divisio Command, and some from your regimental CO, Major Dearborn. The first emphasize destroying the enemy and ignoring any attempt to interrogate and fraternize with the enemy on account of past infiltration, and the latter congratulates you on your victory and suggest pursuing the enemy into the valley they came from, taking elements of 2nd and 3rd Host with you. A complete tactical picture is hard to get, and you can’t move before your force is accounted for, but you decide to.. A) Pursue. This was a major enemy commitment, and we licked them. The Tactica Imperialis suggest harassing them while they are weak. B) Entrench. This defense in depth worked beautifully, let’s let them destroy their forces on our walls. C) Something else? ((PDF artillery rolls extremely well, obliterating large rear areas - not that you notice. The Mandrakes do well, but don’t do much damage to the entrenched enemies. The psyker manages to supress the near trench, making the charge a lot more succesful than otherwise - and the assault parties cleaned house. Sorry for late update, school is kicking my rear end atm))

Well, continuing my ongoing role as "that one overly cautious staff officer", I would like to present plan C (A/B). Where in we pursue, but only until we encounter strongly held fixed defenses, and then we entrench ourselves. We've seen what happens when unsupported infantry tries to hit a fortified trench line. We succeeded in this counter-attack because we planned well and were taking advantage of the confusion of their failed attack. If we pursue too hard now and they have another line of fortifications in reserve, then going in without proper support is probably suicide. If, on the other hand, they don't have reserve fortifications, or those are only lightly held, then by all means press forward. We may be able to start a breakthrough and bust this front wide open.

The corpse god is yours! jng2058 posted:Well, continuing my ongoing role as "that one overly cautious staff officer", I would like to present plan C (A/B). Assuming they don't want to maneuver and have fortified their own backyard, yes. This isn't what you or Divisio expects, though, as such strategies are usually only employed when a planet must be held or stalled at all costs. At any rate, you have outriders on your fastest horses in front and possible access to motorized PDF recon, so it's not like you're just ghostriding the whip right into a hitherto invisible pillbox fortress.
