Lol. It's an ancient forums disease contracted by posting in a forum that no longer exists. Originally intended as a punishment, it is now the only thing special about my lovely posts. Ironic!

food court bailiff posted:i went to a good high school and while we had textbooks for most subjects they were very rarely used for anything except math because the teachers actually knew their subjects well and engaged the class in discussions instead of assigning rote reading homework or w/e I lucked out with high school history teachers because they were all pretty good at what they did and actually went over the stuff that showed how much the US hosed up. On the other hand all the biology related science teachers were hardcore anti-evolution fundamentalists who interjected their bullshit into their class material. Literally all of them, from middle school through high school. There’s no way they weren’t processed into the field through bible colleges they went to specifically to combat evolution

Elementary math textbooks were determinedly multicultural, which I think is great, but our class/school/town was always so homogenously white that we were baffled by the names. There was always a kid named Kwame, which we thought rhymed with "game" and one named Jose which we pronounced like "Joe's." Nooner posted:I miss drawing giant dicks on all the pictures of dudes in my history books so much. I had a history textbook where someone carefully scribbled out every single page number, making it annoying when the teacher said "Now turn to page 102" or "Answer questions 1-4 on page 394." Other graffiti was just aimless vulgarity, giggled at and then forgotten*, but this one actually made the process of learning slightly more difficult. A small triumph. *The page-spanning curlicues excitedly labelled "Vaginal Discharge!" were pretty memorable though hate hoot fucked around with this message at 00:37 on May 7, 2019 |

Khazar-khum posted:Here in California there was a movement to teach children math based on their ethnicity. So black kids would get 'African Math', Hispanic kids would get Mayan math(never mind that the kids come from different cultural backgrounds, not just Yucatan), and so on. Asian kids would get White math. Yes, let's teach kids systems that have no modern relevance, that do not line up with modern practices, and effectively force them from jobs or education that requires math in any way, shape or form. I’m sorry, I know this is from page 1 and we’re up to page 5 now, but I have to ask, how the gently caress was this supposed to work? How is “African math” different from “Mayan math” different from “White math”? Like do white kids get taught regular boring math while black kids get taught the five-percent supreme mathematics or some poo poo?

From everything I can tell, my US public school did fairly well in giving us a well-balanced history education (I guess, compared to some others mentioned here). That being said, I don't think I ever sat through a lesson on WWI that went into anything deeper than "it happened before WWII" and it's kind of baffling

not a textbook, but i remember one day in 7th grade english class we had a substitute who i regret to say look like he walked out of a der sturmer cartoon and talked with this marsh-mouthed nasal lisp, and spent the entire class time going on a huge rant about how great and righteous and strong israel was. the big take away i remember is an israeli pilot landed an f-15 with one wing, and if they went to war with the us, it would at best be a tie, if israel didn't win outright. it was weird.

Man you guys had it rough. I went to public school in Washington state and we learned all about world and us history including a lot of the shady poo poo the us government got up too. Like we learned about the civil rights movement, the anti war movement during Vietnam, the debate about evolution, pretty much everything. We also studied the major world religions Islam, Hinduism, buddhism and christianity. In a way that wasn't preachy or judgmental. I had good teachers who didn't rely on textbooks though.

One day during the Civil Rights semester of my sophomore English class (don't ask me why that's English and not history and yes it was the whole drat semester) put a video on from like the 70s/80s explaining that there are three races: mongoloids, negroids, and caucasoids.
