We watched this last night and I don’t get Pelle.
Is he inbred to? They made reference to the unclouded mind
Did his parents sacrifice themselves in the fire? He talks about watching his parents burn but I thought the fire sacrifice was every 90 years.

Also two other things I wasn’t sure of or maybe I missed.
What was placed under the babies head? and when Christian ran into the one building was the body that was hanging and dissected still alive? It seemed like it was breathing but maybe that was the drugged effect.

I enjoyed the movie but horror movies like this I always think of the immediate aftermath and the fact multiple college kids went on a round trip overseas that many people knew about, had cellphones and in josh’s case had other flights booked pinpointing what point they all disappeared. It seems like someone would follow up with these missing people and easily figure out where the cult is.

Hey, you guys should listen to the A24 podcast with Ari Aster and Robert Eggers where they talk about a lot of the things you have discussed here. It’s pretty cool!

I'm pleased to inform you that Ari Aster is back on his bullshit. Don't know how serious his quote is here, but I'm down for "a four hour nightmare comedy" :toot:

Just watched it. These quotes are what I feel. Really heavy handed and obvious stuff. Loved Hereditary a lot more. If he really wanted to do something, he should've switched genders of the leads. I'd love to see how people would react to the movie after.

I like the way that Ari Aster uses foreshadowing with the grace and subtlety of a porn director zooming in on the crotch of the TV repairman the woman can't afford to pay.

the ending is a lot weaker if you think it's a guy getting his comeuppance. what makes the endings of both hereditary and midsommar so horrific is they're awful endings treated as triumphant.

I didn't like any of the characters. I don't understand how they stay after the rock scene other than the director winking at us. If anything that scene needed to be later in the movie because it's not outdone by anything after it.

I hear the directors cut makes even more subtext upfront and that's sounds worse. I only think it's above a bad movie because it's so ambiguous. Will say that the girl did not look loving 15 and I hate when movies have adults play child aged characters. I also feel the crying in this was a little unnatural and I couldn't tell if Dani had just as many problems as her sister.

I also don't do drugs and the casual acceptance of them threw me off.

it would have most likely ended Aster's career, to be honest, because i can't really picture gender-flipped Midsommar coming off as anything other than hardcore :mrapig: bullshit.

e: like, frankly, i'm not overly comfortable with how most people took this movie's messaging to begin with. it's pretty clear, in the movie, that you are absolutely not supposed to take what happens to Christian as good/proportionate to his offense/etc. at most it's black comedy where he receives a deliberately incredibly extreme comeuppance for what he did, and i'm pretty clear that you're actively supposed to be thinking "OH MY GOD JUST BREAK UP YOU DIPSHITS" through the whole movie.

and yet... in my experience, "they should have just broken up" is considered a fairly hot take and most people seem to think that what happened to Christian is cool, good, and absolutely proportionate to his dickishness, and that burning people to death for being jerks loving owns.

the way Midsommar is, that's the "edgy feminist" take on the movie and (as much as I dislike it) generally acceptable, but if you flipped the genders, I legit can't think of a movie that's on that level of "OH GOD NO" with gender politics other than, like, The Company of Men or Hardcore Henry.

Like in any good slasher movie, all the characters who do drugs are brutally murdered, so no need to worry on that front.

Because making the movie this way is so....safe. Of course everyone would empathize with her. Reverse roles and see if that remains the same.

I know what he was going for but seeing all the articles and posts about how it's a happy ending is crazy to me. She lost her entire life, and voice and choice in anything. She didn't even really choose him. Just to be with a bunch of people that follow scribbles? This cult doesnt even look coordinated. All the joint screaming looked so insincere.

Yeah, but her boyfriend was a jerk and got tortured to death, so it actually owns that she's going to be kept as breeding stock by a bunch of Swedish Leatherfaces, according to the vast majority of people I've seen watch this movie.

zombies + sharks = fun

I talked to a lot of people about this movie in person back before the plague, and most of them were, like me, women who'd call themselves feminists. I haven't come across a single one who genuinely thinks Dani's breeding stock future is a bright one or that Christian should have been burned alive irl for the crime of being a bad boyfriend. We did still dress up in white clothes with flower crowns and threaten a toy in a bear suit with a lighter last Halloween though.

The bear-boy jokes all seem pretty in line with generations of horror fans cheering at good kills, sharing horror clips and gifs, and gleefully watching innocent kids get murdered. It's interesting to me that some folks seem so much more uncomfortable with the death of this one mildly lovely horror movie dude.

I only "do" "alcohol when it comes to drugs but the reality is a lot of people do a whole plethora of drugs so it wasn't too off putting for me. You are right that the redhead doesn't look like a child - she's obviously an attractive adult. Though I think the focus is more on the cheating aspect.

Yeah I'm just being prudeish, also is it really cheating in a dead relationship that we know doesnt last after this? The fact that he didn't cheat before is a miracle. He had been going with little to no sex for months apparently.

I think the discussion is centered on them because without it the film doesn't have much else. And it's also such a well done bad relationship. The akwardness was perfect.

My read on it is that Dani's choice allows her to indulge her worst impulses. She's obviously happy to abandon her individuality and all personal ties, but it's probably not in her best interests that she join a trad fertility murder cult.

This is a fair point, and I posted a whole lot about this movie when it first came out. But I mostly cared because I loved Hereditary so much and was mostly underwhelmed by this in the moment.

With a bit of time between viewings, I can certainly appreciate this movie, it's just generally not to my horror tastes. But it's beautiful, and its got some real shocking moments, and I probably think about it more than Hereditary.

A24 is offering a Blu Ray special edition of Midsommar’s Director’s Cut. Pricey, but it comes with extras. If you just want to see the DC don’t bother; it was fine but not 45 bucks fine.

Finally watched this after years with a group of about 8 friends. I absolutely loved it, beautiful movie but the guys who were like “YEAH FRIDAY 13 HORROR NIGHT” were pretty confused at it being called “horror”

Honestly the only really disturbing scene for me in a traditional horror sense was the murder suicide at the beginning. In a way I kind of liked that because whenever Dani dreams about it you’re right there with her because of how hosed up that one scene was compared to the idyllic sunlit flowers later

I kinda hated how sloppy this was compared to Heredity. The "punishments" seemed arbitrary and random - like nordic themed gross-out slasher kills instead of serving any coherent purpose.
