Josh & Benny Safdie (& 5th Beatle Ronald Bronstein) are the Safdie Brothers], who make movies about sociopaths who live in New York City & environs.

Tim Chalamet posted:

Have you ever been to a fancy party with Josh and Benny Safdie? They stick out like sore thumbs. If they had it their way, they would arrive to the Oscars via subway and climb up to the Dolby from belowground. The New York directing duo have taken it upon themselves to keep alive the mantle of gritty and raucously interior inner-city films built by spiritual kin like Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee. The pair have continuously put out contemporary, raw and untethered work over the last decade, each film building on the traits of the prior, but never once sacrificing their innate grittiness.

THE EARLY WORK
After having scrapped together a bunch of short films under production banner Red Bucket Films https://www.redbucketfilms.com/ (They now make films under Elara Pictures http://www.elarapictures.com/) the brothers got some work making corperate films and commercials. Then one day they took the money that Kate Spade handbags gave them to make an ad and instead made a whole feature length movie that screened at SXSW and Cannes.

The Pleasure of Being Robbed (2008) was shot on 16mm and stars Eléonore Hendricks as a pickpocket who steals for fun. I have not seen this picture nor have I seen any Bresson. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Y42N7NiEJc

Daddy Longlegs (2009) is a semi-autobiographical comedy about a fuckup divorcee who attempts to deal with his two kids for his half-month of custody. I have not seen this picture but Safdie Bros 5th Beatle Ronald Bronsein (a filmmaker in his own right, he helps write and edit most Safdie Bros features) plays the dad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpQbnh8o810

THE UNCUT GEMS ERA
After they wound down press for Longlegs the brothers wanted to make a movie about the larger than life characters of the NYC "Diamond District," https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/47th_Street_(Manhattan)#Diamond_District but got... distracted.

Lenny Cooke (2013) is, unlike the rest of the Bros features, a documentary. This doc tells the story of the titual basketball player, who showed titanic promise as a high school prospect being bypassed by the NBA. I have not seen this movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WlFDL8Ra4o

Heaven Knows What (2015) follows Harley, a homeless heroin addict (played by Arielle Holmes, her character based on Holmes' unpubished memoir about living as a homeless heroin addict) as she attempts to score dope and reconcile with her abusive lover. I think this is the Bros best movie and is the movie Buddy Duress is from. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxWMc7iHt8Q

Good Time (2017) is about Connie, a small-time criminal (Robert Pattinson in a star-making role) bungles a bank robbery landing his developmentally disabled brother in Rikers. Sure that his brother won't survive in the brutal prison, Connie cons his way across Queens as he attempts to evade the law and scare up tens of thousands of dollars for bail. Buddy Duress is in this movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVyGCxHZ_Ko

💎Uncut Gems💎 (Christmas) heard that you like to Win. Adam Sandler is a jeweler to the ballin and tasteless who makes increasingly higher stakes bets as creditors and family issues circle around his house of cards. He is very Jewish and that seems to be a plot point. Buddy Durress does not seem to be in this movie, a great sadness. Executive produced by Martin Scorsese https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTfJp2Ts9X8

OTHER STUFF
The brothers are currently booked for a remake of 48 Hrs with Jerrod Carmichael. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/48_Hrs.#Remake

Today the Uncut Gems trailer released after no small degree of my personal anticipation. I thought it was alright, but I liked the screen test teaser they released earlier last week a bit more.

It's plenty evocative of the character Sandler's playing and how much he's gonna get roughed up over the course of the movie. Strong energy, no discernible Travis Scott. The first poster they released for this leans more on the mood from this teaser.

Saw uncut gems early at a hype screening at the Alamo Drafhouse. ‘S good! It’s so much the first time round that I’ll prob have to see it again before I can make heads or tales of it. Sandler is good, Menzel who plays his wife steals ever scene she’s in. Just bulldozes over him.

The faces he makes while posting are inexcusable! When he writes a post his face is like a troll double checking bones to see if there's any meat left! When I post I look like a peacock softly kissing a rose! Didn't his parents provide him with a posting mirror to practice forums faces growing up?
Safdies bang, thanks for pointing out Lenny Cooke's up on the criterion channel, most likely wouldn't have given it a shot had I known it wasn't their picture.

Time for a little robot chauvinism!

Didn't realize this thread was here. Just gonna pop in and say Uncut Gems is the best movie of the decade.

ive been made aware that uncut gems is one of the five titles criterion is launching their 4K line with. weirdly adam sandler's name is on the cover? i cant imagine they need to do any marketing off sandlers name for this release as i dont think criterion has mass market distribution outside of barnes and noble https://www.criterion.com/films/31917-uncut-gems

floating 26" off da ground. BURR!
I mean it’s a career highlight for Sandler, and his name is much larger in the original cover for the Blu-Ray, so I’m not sure what you’re getting at.

it is def the sandler show, but criterion doesnt really go for putting actors names on the cover art, usually favoring the director if any. like, jet li isnt even on the upcoming ouatic box set. its not unprecidented, but less than 5% of their covers have an actor's name on it
