I had one a couple of months ago, first ever, UK debit card and it got refunded very easily. I only use that card in cash machines and for occasional online stuff, nothing sketchy. Maybe I was skimmed, but I usually check for that and tend to use the same few machines. It happened soon after I'd had a new card and thrown the chopped-up one away, split across two binbags, so it seems relatively possible that someone put the card back together, or at least enough of the bits to make a transaction. Gonna have to cut it way smaller than ~1cm squares and spread it out across several rubbish pickups in future. Pretty crap that it was my biggest transaction in a decade, for a product category I'd never bought before, and they didn't call to check for fraud.

I once got a call from the bank because someone was trying to withdraw cash using my card in St. Petersburg, Russia. I actually was there about a week before so it must have been ATM machine skimmer. I was actually impressed how effeciently they intercepted the attempt.

You were probably skimmed, nobody is rooting through trash 365 days a year to find a chopped card. I've heard that skimming is way more common in Europe cause it's an organized crime thing. And some of the skimmers these days are pretty drat undetectable. They don't need the false faceplates these days, they put miniature pickups inside the dang card slot. poo poo's tiny.

BobbyDrake posted:I have to be honest, I’m not sure where anyone gets the whole “debit cards aren’t protected” thing from. It’s because in the very early days of debit cards & ATM’s)early Eighties), debit cards were not covered under the traditional credit-card federal protection laws and it was possible for a lovely bank to be a complete rear end about fraudulent charges. A few years later, federal laws were passed covering debit cards as well, but obsolete/mis-information never dies.

It's still harder/more of hassle to get fraudulent debit charges fixed than fraudulent credit card ones. I know people who had their debit cards used, it wasn't as easy for them as it was for me when my credit cards were used.

When I was in college I had some charges on my debit card I didn't recognize from "COFFEESHOPS" and reported it to my bank. At the time, I was only buying Starbucks Doubleshots from vending machines so there was no reason I'd ever be going to a coffee shop. They said there was nothing weird about the charges but did issue me a new card. About a couple weeks later I realized the charges were in fact me, because I was buying soup at Au Bon Pain when I wasn't drinking Doubleshot for lunch.

I had unauthorized charges to "craig's list" once my friends informed me craig's list doesn't handle money directly, so whoever was defrauding me was making a donation to the website craig's list, and none of us could think of a reason why they would do that, unless it was craig. so gently caress you, craig

I don’t know why you would worry about some poo poo that has nothing to do with you. If people make it your problem then it’s gonna be their problem. Pretty simple I guess. If they got a problem with how you spend your money or handle your poo poo too bad, it is literally none of their business. At the end of the day it’s just another huge pain in the rear end to throw someone’s bullshit in the trash for them and get your money back and it shouldn’t be any time or effort in the first place. People can’t sort out something real simple and now you gotta sort out something real complex. gently caress that.

I once had a fraudulent charge on a CC for $17 at a Cheesecake Factory in CA about 800 miles from where I live. Bank was chill, new card/refund. I kinda felt more offended than violated. Seriously, $17? What's that, like a slice of pie and a sandwich? I get they test the waters on a card, see if it slips under the radar, but criminy, at least get the whole cheesecake for $50 or whatever.

I’ve honestly never had an unauthorized charge credit or debit. I’ve been the receiver of 5 hacks, some ranging from target to the OMB. I have 3 credit monitoring services now, not counting my credit unions. I travel for work extensively using AMEX (work) and personal MasterCard because work won’t let me charge food on Amex. Decades of charging poo poo. Across countries. Wtf is up with y’all?

First time I'm pretty sure was a gas station skimmer. 2nd time was probably because my wife plugged the card number into some French website to download karaoke tracks (I did not know about this until afterwards). 3rd time was after Equifax, so I just kind of assumed it was that. Oh also, after the Target thing was announced, I went straight to my Credit Union and asked for a new card, so it wasn't that. I check my bank statement weekly, I try my best not to be stupid, but there's just too many vulnerabilities out there. At this point, I'm pretty sure the thieves are more interested in getting the info from improperly secured company servers than they are rooting through my trash or anything.

Good info, but using a credit card to withdrawal cash from an ATM isn't usually a great idea. Most of them have a mandatory 10% charge on cash advances and a much higher APR that starts the minute it comes out.
