in Super mario world, when you find the crashed airship full of boos (an "apparition type" enemy, to borrow the parlance of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice), & you realize that it's one of the airships from Mario 3, and that the boos are all the koopas that died from you killing them? you feel the most frightening emotion of all: guilt. this experience directly inspired Takayoshi Sato during early development of Silent Hill 2.

You know, in the instruction manual of the original game it specifically said that Bowser not only kidnapped Peach, but also transformed all your friends and family, like almost all toads, into flying bricks that get destroyed by being hit from below.
