Its safe to say MOST remakes are bad. Also, youre making a film and point #1 is you have no original ideas.

not on their own, but when you add a profit motive and the idea that name recognition alone predicts baseline unit movement better than say, casting a specific celebrity, you wind up here, in hell.

Remakes like this make me slightly angry because they took a hilariously awesome iconic 90s family movie with a unique gothic style and spooky edge and goddamn Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd and Anjelica Huston, and remade it as a generic upbeat boring Despicable Me style CG thing. Zzzzz. The Addams Family is a Halloween movie classic that delighted me as a kid, so it's just sad to see. Kids are not stupid like cynical movie executives think they are and they can appreciate more then the lowest effort garbage... and the adults sitting next to them shouldn't be put to sleep either. Zzzzz. The Addams Family started out as comics in the late 1930s. This new CGI Addams Family movie is more or less based on the comics and not the 1960s TV show or the 1990s movies. It may or may not have have elements from the latter two, but I don’t consider it a remake, but an adaptation of the comics, much like the 1990s movies are adaptations of the 1960s TV show.

I think it's been touched on a lot in this thread, but the "committee interference" and "test group feedback" have gotten out of control in the past few decades. During the "New Hollywood" era, you had directors being given free reign, and they created a lot of timeless classics and box-office juggernauts. The studios appreciated this, but those same directors also made a lot of artsy films that made little profit or bombed. Hollywood is a money-making business, and the studios want to protect their investments and the shareholders want to make money. Remakes are usually seen as a safe bet. I remember a story about (I think) the original Dirty Harry movie being made, and Clint Eastwood having to physically stand in the doorway to the editing booth to keep the studio execs from getting their grubby hands on Don Siegel and Carl Pingitore while they were editing. If you don't have a director who has that kind of power, or a star willing to stand up to the suits, then you end up with a vanilla "by the numbers" movie that appeals to a wider audience, but never has a chance to be great. Then again it can go the other way and a star/director gets too big and you end up with "The Guru" or something else that fails because the director has lost touch.

If we're talkin' Disney, the Aladdin live-action remake is pretty great. Will Smith made the genie his own instead of parroting Robin Williams. Mena Massoud owned as Aladdin. Cinderella is also pretty groovy. Everything else sucked.
