Rıza Silahlıpoda. The Turkish electronic organ wizard produced this incredible album back in 1980. Just look at the cover art, god dammit, it makes me giggle every time I see it - apart from the naked Turk on the cover, sporting a Disco Dad moustache, the music on the album is unbelievabely cheesy. Mostly sappy love songs but set to a synthpop arrangement, mr. Silahlıpoda did not follow the Disco crowd that was really big at the time, so that too is a plus. The album has it all; wonky analog synths, electronic organs, and the musician's nerdy chants set to a light rhythm machine tempo. Personally I like this album way more than I should. The album opens with meandering "Eminem" tune that sounds like something you'd hear in Borat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyKRjQGMenU&list=PLSlZ-0NTzQBPLOC1AzqGPICuyZl0qP9OR Back in 1975, he and his moustache band Ritm-68 issued a single with Big Band-like arrangement of Beethoven's 5th symphony. The result is quite something, the guy has twiddle fingers! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6cVBtVxMOA Back in the 60s and 70s, the Turks copied Western rock music but adapted the tunes to their style of music. My friend, who is a guitarist, said that they copied Pink Floyd but that the resulting music has a really peasant sound to it. In the end, he called it "Hick Floyd". This is a good example of such music - and notice that there is an entire playlist with translated Turkish rock songs on youtube, you might want to give it a hear because there are quite a few gems in the rough hidden in there! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXN15uh4DLU&list=PLAMh_0Y3otNl57oy30BljhCJ2SOxnagD9&index=13 Angry synthpop-rock from 1974! ... Post your favorite cheesy guilty pleasures, but don't just dump youtube links, write something about it and be verbose - be a pal and introduce us to your music.

Ok that last link is background music I want following me at most, if not all, times. Ok, I’ll try to write a little bitty about some ditties. Here we go. The Egyptian Lover - I Cry (Night After Night). Turns out this song wasn’t made like two years ago but like three decades ago, and has this nice slick sexiness to it and a killer riff. Haroumi Hosono - Sports Men. Ok if you’re in this read you’ve heard of him, or at least YMO, but if not stop, listen, immediately. If you’ve never heard of Hosono or YMO, you’ve heard something inspired by them, and gently caress off if you have not, you liar. Bob James - Nautilus. Bob James is one of the most sampled artists of all time, full stop. He also did the theme to Taxi which is like audio silk. Christer Sandelin - Det hon vill ha. Oj oj, this is purestrain Västerbottenost, a goddamn chefs kiss to cheesy Swedish pop. I love this song and it’s one of few I can sing in Swedish. Virna Lindt - Underwater Boy. This however, is proof that Sweden does deserve its rep in making drat good music. Her album, Shiver, is proto-vaporwave and unabashedly unpretentious, and her cover of Windmills of You Mind is easily my favorite.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUNKtUBkXto Primus isn't really cheesy, even though my favorite album of theirs is called Sailing the Seas of Cheese, but this one song is incredibly goofy and awesome. edit: Oh ! Have a 60s pop ballad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmjUFjQxzGA It's a version of Next Train Out by Gil Bernal. Valerie Masters' version is better known, but I like this version of the song a little better. It's slightly more uptempo. You can also hear this one in a bad horror film, Blood of Dracula's Castle. ohnobugs fucked around with this message at 07:45 on Dec 24, 2019 |

Silver Convention - Get Up and Boogie Silver Convention were a German group. They had two big hits in America, this and Fly, Robin, Fly. Lyrics were not always important and disco and this is indeed the case. Get Up and Boogie has a total of six words in its lyrics: "Get up and boogie" and a male saying "That's right." The lyrics are repeated occasionally throughout. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-L31ffPRdk There is an extended version of this. It adds nothing, of course, but adds three minutes of dance music to a song that was already four. Rick Wakeman - I'm So Straight I'm a Weirdo If you know prog, Wakeman is a piano/keyboard/mellotron master. He's mainly known for his work with Yes, but he was also in the Strawbs and originally earned a reputation as a top-notch session man. That's him on Bowie's Life on Mars and Cat Stevens' Morning Has Broken. He's completed about 100 solo albums, which for even most prog people, is about 96 too many. Wakeman didn't sing in Yes. He didn't sing in the Strawbs. He didn't sing on session work. Out of the 100+ solo albums, exactly one has him singing and that's Rock and Roll Prophet. So, this was strange to begin with. I'm So Straight I'm a Weirdo was the main song. It was released as a single and actually had some popularity. Also, a pre-famous Boy George appears in the music video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ8DWJfbHJM Wakeman sang on two other songs on Rock and Roll Prophet, Maybe '80 and Do You Believe in Fairies. As you might can guess, it was supposed to be released in 1980. His usual company refused to release it and it didn't come out until 1982ish.
