BlueBull posted:The loving MILLISECOND that lighter touched that longer fuse, the shell went off and passed maybe within 10cm of my face into the sky. Eyebrows gone, some of my hair gone, and if I had lent slightly more forward, I reckon that shell would have taken my head off. Yup that’s quickmatch for ya.. once the lit fuse hits the paper sheath it’s pretty much instant that the lift charge will go.. it’s insanely fast. Things are a bit more "flexible" in South Africa. I should actually ask my old man where he got all those fireworks from sometime, they just sort of got delivered to his house, and we sure as hell didn't have any permits or instructions on anything and kind of winged it. That fuse incident was scary as all hell, why does it go so fast anyway?

BlueBull posted:Ah yes I heard about that amber, isn't that some sort of chemical weapon stuff from way back when? At the end of the war there was a rather huge surplus of ordnance. The retreating German army dumped a ton of it in local lakes, and after the war was over the allies dumped an absolute hellton of stuff in the Baltic Sea. Including a staggering amount of phosphorous, which isn't as well-behaved as the mustard gas and chlorine gas they dumped. Thus after a heavy storm you can find an exciting mix of amber and phosphorous on the local beaches. By the way, you can distinguish a piece of amber from phosphorous by gently biting on it.

I can use an electric match and once the electricity hits the squib I know the shell will go up instantly. Compensate for the lift delay and you can have a shell detonate exactly in a desired position along a music score etc.

Not sure.. 600mm is 2 x the max size we can shoot legally in Canada.. a 300mm shell up here would cost around $400-$500 CAD at wholesale depending on the effect. I think as you go past 2 ft shell sizes the costs are exponentially higher .. those are huge shells.
